bodies found in a massachusetts home, and a woman who says she was held hostage and tortured. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters in new york. i'm brook silva-braga in for anne-marie green. some of america's closest all lies are retaliating following president trump's imposition of steep tariffs on steel and aluminum. the tariffs, 45% on steel and 10% of aluminum imposed on mexico, canada, and the european union took effect this morning. >> canada, the largest supplier to the u.s. is imposing tariffs on nearly $13 billion of imports to the u.s. they're putting tariffs on farm products and taxing states of some key public politicians. the president of france,

emmanuel macron, called the u.s. decision illegal. in the u.s., some republican lawmakers are critical. nebraska senator ben sasse said in a statement, this is dumb. europe, canada, and mexico are not china, and you don't treat a al lies the same way you treat opponents. president had initially imposed the tariffs in march but granted a temporary exemption to mexico, eu, and canada. it ran out at midnight. commerce secretary wilbur ross insisted this is not a trade war. >> it's been under discussion for a very long time and it's a very small percentage of the respective economy. >> reporter: american makers of steel and aluminum will get a boost. the president trump said the days of the u.s. getting taken advantage of are over. for some this message is a tough pill to swallow. >> we have to believe at some point common sense will prevail.

but we see no sign of that in this action today by the u.s. administration. >> and today secretary of commerce ross leaves for beijing for talks aimed at preventing a trade war with china. this morning another round of senior level talks were held between north and south korea, part of an effort to get the north to give up its nuclear weapons. today a top leader kim jong-un will make a rare visit to washington to hand deliver a letter from kim to president trump. laura podesta is here in new york with those details. good morning, laura. >> good morning, brook. yes, for the first time in 18 years, a senior north korean official will be at the white house. the letter he's delivering to president trump is a reciprocal message similar to the one sent to kim last month. >> i look forward to seeing what's in the letter. it's very important to them. >> reporter: a senior north korean official will hand deliver a letter from kim

jong-un to president trump at the white house today. kim yong chol, north korea's 72-year-old spy chief, has spent the past two days with secretary of state mike pompeo in new york. they've been trying to get the june 12th nuclear summit back on track. >> our two countries face a pivotal moment in which it would be nothing short of tragic to let this opportunity go to waste. >> besides being a progress toward the summit, a white house visit will be a propaganda win for north korea. the last such meeting was in 2000 during the clinton presidency. president trump seemed optimistic. >> hopefully we'll have a meeting on the 12th that's going along very well, but i want it to be meaningful. it doesn't mean it gets done in one meeting. maybe you have to have a second or third. maybe we'll have none. >> meanwhile tensions between north and south korea continue to tlau. the countries resumed senior level talks in a border village. it discussed how to provide a positive environment for the summit. pompeo said among the sticking

points holding up the summit is how willing and serious north korea is on complete denuclearization. brook? >> june 12th coming up fast. laura podesta, thanks. >> in springfield, massachusetts, police are searching a house where three bodies have been discovered. the home where stewart wheldon lives. he was followed in a car chase. a woman claims wheldon held her captive for a month, sexually assaulted and bead her with a hammer. weldon is being held on $100,000 in connection with that case. he's not been charged in connection with the bodies. >> he would wear a hood and it would be all tied up where you could only see his face. >> strange looking, very quiet, kept to himself. looked like an angry man. >> the identities of the bodies are yet to be determined. in tennessee, the man accused of killing a sheriff's deputy remains on the run.

rewards totalling $40,000 are available leading to the arrest of steven wiggins. ika castro-miles is already under shs e wath him. baker's body was taken to a funeral home. baker was gunned down wednesday while responding to a call about a suspicious car. on hawaii, residents of the leilani estates, one of the neighborhoods hard hit by the lava from the kilauea volcano, have been ordered to evacuate. they face arrest if they fail to comply with the evacuation. it shows no signs of calming down. >> reporter: this is the most active fissure, at times spewing lava from the kilauea volcano, at times as high as 250 feet in the air. while the site is spectacular, the threat is serious. the geological survey says the 2,350-degree lava is moving fast enough to cover six football

fields in an hour. >> this is a neighborhood and people have lost homes. >> reporter: at least 77 have been destroyed so far and more are at risk. steven neil and his family were hoping to stick it out in their home in hoe powe ho beach lots, but it was too dangerous. >> lights flashing, sirens on, and saying everybody evacuate, the lava is going to be at four corners in four to six hours, coming down the highway 132 really fast. >> reporter: workers are trying to clear a new evacuation route. lava has already overrun highway 132. that leaves people in about 500 homes and vacation rentals with just one exit. if the lava flows across highway 137, there would be no way out. >> we want those people to leave. we don't want to have first responders or national guard or

marines marines in helicopters risking their lives. >> reporter: it's not clear how many people still remain in evacuation zones. danielle nottingham, cbs news. president trump says he's considering granting pardons to two celebrities connected to his former show, "the apprentice." they're ex-illinois governor rod blagojevich, convicted for selling his seat and of corruption, and martha stewart, who was convicted for lying about a stock trade. he granted his fifth pardon to filmmaker dinesh d'souza. late night show host samantha bee apologized for using vulgar words about ivanka trump. bee tweeted, i would like to apologize to ivanka trump and my viewers.

"usa today" roerts eports oi advised forecast for hurricanes. and colleges are now calling for 14 named storms. six of those are forecast to become hurricanes. that's a decrease from what they projected in april. they say seawater in the eastern atlantic is unusually cold for this time of year, and that means less fuel for hurricanes to form. and "the new york times" reports a sign that washed away in the aftermath of hurricane sandy was discovered on a beach in france. the real estate company sign disappeared from a waterfront property in brielle, new jersey, after sandy hit in 2012. a 64-year-old man found the sign while walking on a beach near bordeaux, france, last month. it had traveled the entire width of the atlantic ocean whebriells

secretary of state mike pompeo is reporting good progress in efforts to revive the summit between kim jong-un and president trump. and massachusetts police are searching a house where three bodies were found. they pulled over stewart weldon over after a car chase. police say the woman with weldon in the car say he held her captive and tortured her. we weldon has been charged in that case but not charged in connection with the bodies. there was a touching tribute to a fallen american hero. photos show his newborn baby surrounded by those he served with. jeff glor has their story. >> reporter: while working overseas, chris harris received the best news, a special handmade onesie that said, "chris, you're going to be a dad."
