her body this morning. the 55 year old designer left a note in her apartment in manhattan. spade created a sensation in the fashion industry in the 1990s. kate spade company eventually grew into a global lifestyle plan. coach bought the business in a $2.4 billion deal last year. spade herself sold remaining ownership stake years before. a crowd was gathered outside of her apartment when her body was brought outside. two other high profile fashion designers hanged themselves in recent years. mcqueen in 2010 and scott in 2014. news of spade's death is prompting an outpouring on social media. people are urging anyone struggling with depression to call the national suicide prevention hot line. to our other big story, today is the california primary. in the bay area san francisco voters are choosing the city's next mayor. one person who issaying how he is voting is the current

mayor. jessica flores is live at city hall and spoke to him as he cast his ballot. does he have any advice for his successor? >> reporter: well he has only been on the job for a cup couple months. but he does have some words of wisdom. he says take advantage of the opportunity because there is a lot of work to do. voting day in san francisco is the beginning of the end for the interim mayor. >> the march goes on. the next mayor will certainly have a full plate. >> homelessness, housing, public safety, all major issues facing the next mayor. there are four front runners competing to fill the term of late mayor ed lee. breed would be the city's first african-american mayor. supervisor jane kim would be the first korean american mayor. former state senator mark less

term of late mayor ed lee and the next mayoral election will be next year in november. i am jessica flores, kpix5. people across the state are also voting for governor and lieutenant governor. this is video of the current lieutenant governor casting his ballot. he is running to replace governor jerry brown next year. in los angeles, gubernatorial candidate viarigosa also voted. the polls show he is fighting with cox for second place. there are 27 candidates running for governor today. polls are giving a better picture of who the front runners are. newsome is expected to finish with most votes. he will spend the day in the bay area today. his main challengers on the democratic side -- president trump endorsed johncox.assembly

is also running. the top two candidates will advance to the november general election regardless of party. the race for lieutenant governor is crowded with nine candidates. among the front runners, jeff blite who served president obama as special counselor and ambassador. senator dianne feinstein is widely expected to take first in the senate primary today leaving the main battle to be over who will join her on the november ballot. the former democratic state leader has also been considered the front runner for the second spots. >> people are voting on whether to approve a toll hike up to $3 on bay area bridges. sandra osbourne reports in san jose, from one of the many projects that would benefit if voters say yes. >> reporter: no matter where you are on the political

spectrum, it is something we can agree on. traffic in the bay area can definitely be rough. the measure voters are seeing today is measure 3. no doubt it's certainly seen opposition. a yes vote in favor of raising bridge tolls excluding golden gate bridge by $3 over 6 years would put major cash into the bay area traffic relief plan. funding would include 4.5 billion for transportation projects like fixing choke points in some highways and improvements to public transportation. a no vote would be against raising bridge tolls. executive summary of the measure estimates between now and 2040 the bay area will add 1 million jobs and grow by 2 million residents. money would help extend bart from the planned north san jose nation to san jose and into santa clara. over six years toll increases would look like this. $1 in january next year, another dollar in january 2022

and a final $1 increase in 2025. some bay area residents say they would be willing to pay if it would lower or eliminate traffic. opponents are calling this regressive saying what this does is punish service workers who can't afford to live in city centers like san francisco. people that do have to commute over bridges every day for work. it's all up to the voters. you still have time to go out there and cast your ballot. santa clara voters are deciding whether to remove a judge from the bench. the recall campaign started after he sentenced turner in 2016. critics say the six months was too lenient. others argue he should not be punished for making a decision within sentencing guidelines. he spoke with cbs news and said a judge cannot be worried about public reaction to any decision. he added he focused on ethical constraints and rule of law. the last successful recall campaign against a u.s. judge

was more than four decades ago. embattled santa clara county sheriff lori smith is fighting to keep her job. the department is faced with several scandals under her leadership opening the door for three guards were convictejail inmate. smith herself has been accused of sexually harassing a co- worker, a claim she denies. california is also going to vote on whether to ban flavored tobacco products. actually just san francisco. prop 3 would prohibit things like menthol cigarettes, flavored chewing tobacco, flavored liquids in e cigarettes which proponessents argue target kids. as of last week they have contributed more than $11.5 million to a campaign seeking to overturn it. we'll have results and analysis tonight during a special live stream on cbssf.com and our social media

another crime, witness tampering. manafort allegedly used encrypted messaging apps and intermediate to contact two false business sources asking them to falsely testify. sources say manafort is banking on a presidential pardon if convicted. there is no evidence he is promised one but president trump insists his power to pardon extends to everyone, even himself. monday he tweeted he had the absolute right to pardon myself but why would i do that, when i have done nothing wrong? a supporter and former house speaker newt gingrich told cbs this morning that would be a mistake. >> if a president was dumb enough to pardon themselves this would be such an arrogant statement of power that the house would probably impeach him within a week. >> reporter: democrats argue the president does not have the power to pardon himself. mola lenghi, cbs news, the white house. prosecutors asking a federal judge to revoke manafort's release and have him await his trial in jail.

in the bay area, a 17 year old girl is dead after a head on collision outside brentwood. east contra costa fire tweeted this photo according to chp. a jeep passing traffic in its lane crashed into a tow truck yesterday going in the opposite direction. the jeep veered off the road starting a brush fire that was quickly put out. two passengers in the jeep were airlifted to the hospital. one of them, the teen girl, died from her injuries shortly after. a big fire in santa clara this morning. it started around 6:30 at the acura dealership on stephens creek boulevard. firefighters mopped up hot spots at the car repair facility and knocked down the fire within an hour. the view of the fire from chopper 5 shows heavy black smoke coming from the collapsed roof. according to the santa clara fire chief, there is no concern of bad air quality luckily because of today's mild wind conditions. a miracle rescue after the

de a a silver lining from the volcanic eruption in guatemala. rescuers found this baby seemingly unharmed inside a house covered in ash. at least 69 people have been killed since the volcano eruption sunday. officials expect the number to rise with many victims buried in hot ash and mud. according to disaster relief in guatemala more than 31 people have been evacuated and 1.7 million have been affected by the eruption. it ended late sunday but officials say there could be

things slightly cooler than yesterday. you will probably notice that especially for inland areas, not expecting to reach the 80s in many spots. a live look at san jose, nice clear conditions. temperatures in san jose are 72 now, 74 santa rosa, 58 san francisco. normally at this time we are already in the 60s. that's not so much the case right around the water especially with the coastal cooling. it's all because of this low. you see the wind stream lines. we are getting those west winds coming through, ridge of high pressure bringing hot air across desert southwest which is problematic for firefighters. they're hoping for a bit of cooling. it looks like we are the ones getting it. temperatures should be around 66 for san francisco. we are expecting low 60s, low 70s for san jose, concord mid to upper 70s, morgan hill 78. when you are away from the water it will be a little bit warmer especially east where temperatures will be in the low
