kpix 5's jackie ward shows us what happened. >> interesting morning. that's for sure. we woke up when we heard knocking on our door. >> reporter: from chopper 5, you could see what was going on just feet from this front door. a sedan,balancg h a smashed fence anra>> someone ra road and went flying over the fence into our neighbor's roof downhill. >> reporter: police say this happened around 6:20 this morning and believe the driver was traveling very fast. they say it made a turn off the 9900 block of golf links road, of the private hill to a street, and launched into the air before landing on the garage. nothing shows that the driver

trying to stop. there are no tire tracks to be found anywhere. >> this is very common to have an accident of this nature, driv able to geout ofh his car on his own. grabbed a medical backboard and began attacking officers with it, seriously injuring an officer. >> the officer is being treated rious inries to the face and head. significant injuries to the face and head. >> reporter: as bad as this looks, officers it could have been worse had it not been for this tree that took the brunt of the impact. without the tree there, the car would have continued to plow into the house. the suspect has been charged for a talking -- attacking police officers and firefighters. in the oakland hills, jackie ward, kpix 5. a driver under the influence sent a 5-year-old to the hospital. according to police, this happened at 8:15 on east 18th street. when it is rare -- when it rear-

ended an suv, causing it to roll over several times and had a third vehicle. a 5-year-old boy in the suv was transported via helicopter to a local children's hospital for precautionary measures. a car narrowly missed a firefighter working on a roadway in san jose. the car slammed into the back of a fire truck at 3:30 this morning near capital expressway. firefighters were working to put out a small brush fire nearby. no word on what caused the crash. both the driver and firefighter are expected to be okay. campaign 2018 now. the san francisco mayoral race is still too close to call. with tens of thousands of ballots to be counted. the vote count last night started with supervisor london breed, well out in front. but when ranked choice numbers are factored in, things changed considerably. mark leno picked up a lot of votes from jane kim's supporters who picked him second. leno and kim joined forces in the final days of the campaign.

that strategy appears to have worked, so leno winds up with a slight lead. here is the catch. we got word this morning that there are some 90,000 ballots that have to be processed and cod. atnumb coulamicalhange things at th point, the race is still wide open. what's more, we may not know the final total four days. something the candidates were hanging onto well into the night. >> it's time for us to come together. no matter who becomes mayor of san francisco, we have a lot of work to get done and i'm still going to be here doing the work in my leadership capacity. >> the citizens of san francisco are very hungry for change. they want better for their city. and, they want to know what they can do to get the city back on track. >> we will be getting a vote count update at 4:00 today from san francisco's elections office. in the race for governor, democrat gavin newsom will be facing republican john cox in

november. gavin newsom who led in the polls leading up to the primary finished with 33% of the vote. cox surged past the democrat, antonio villaraigosa, after being endorsed by president trump. he finished in second with 26%. both newsom and cox gathered for campaign parties last night at headquarters inwsom celebrat looked ahead to the next round. budget to send a clear message to his new arrival while taking in the poll numbers in southern california. >> it is our duty r the futureerns to keep dreang, to kediti, and to keep demanding more. for me, courage for change is more than just a campaign slogan. it's always been and always will be california's truest calling. >> i just talked to gavin newsom. but let me just take a moment to send him another message.

yesterday, and we learned her seat will be challenged by democratic state senator kevin de leon who came in second place after a close race. in santa clara county, a sentence in a stanford sexual assault case sparked public outcry and led to the removal of a judge from the bench. kpix 5 reporter sandra osborne has more details. nearly needed a simple l effort majority for santa clara county voters rday. it was in 2016 that judge aaron persky handed down the controversial six month sentence to stanford swimmer brock turner, convicted of rape. a recall that many people started when they thought the sentence was too short for the crimes. michelle dauber who launched the campaign said the local vote will resonate nationally. cindy hendrickson has received a majority of the vote to become aaron persky's successor. >> it has been exciting to me in this race to encounter people who see what they perceive to be injustice, and

they are willing to step up and speak out, and work to bring about change. and, that has been really inspiring to me. >> if a judge has lost his job for doing his job, i think it's a very sad day for the judiciary in california. >> reporter: people defending aaron persky say his sentence was legal and the recall could undermine judicial independence. the last time voters decided to unseat a justice in california was in 1932, more than 80 years ago. in palo alto, sandra osborne, kpix 5. >> public prosecutor cindy hendrickson is set to replace aaron persky. she got 70% of the vote in santa clara county. bay area voters appear to be okay with shelling out more money for bridge tolls. regional measure three passed with 60% support in the nine county region. over the next 6 years, the toll increases will look like this. a one dollar increase in january 2019, a one dollar increase in january 2022, and a

final one dollar increase in 2025. an east bay congressman released a statement regarding measure three saying, bay area traffic is a serious challenge to the economy and quality of life, and the passage of regional major three -- regional measure three shows how desperate people are for solutions. while i'm skeptical about what it will deliver, my hope now is that local and regional officials adhere to high standards of accountability voin both contra costa and solano counties voted against regional measure three toll hikes. president trump has granted clemency to alice johnson, the great-grandmother serving a life sentence for a nonviolent drug offense. her case was highlighted last week when reality tv star kim kardashian met with the president at the white house to discuss sentencing and prison reform. the 63-year-old johnson has served 22 years in federal prison for what was a first time criminal offense without parole. kardashian said she was moved

foster is pleading no contest to the last remaining count of a misdemeanor assault rifle possession. foster will have 2 years of probation, barred from possessing any guns or ammo. instead of a 30 day work sentence, he will serve 232 hours of community service. the sister of celebrated fashion designer kate spade says she took her own life after a long struggle with mental illness. spade was found dead yesterday in her new york apartment. reporter jericka duncan has more on what police say was left in her suicide note. >> reporter: police say a housekeeper found kate spade hanging from a red scarf, tied to a doorknob in her bedroom. her husband, andy, was home at the designer left a suicide note addressed to her 13-year- old daughter, telling her it was not your fault. >> the contents of that note, as well as the physical state of the apartment, and the comments of the witness lend to the credibility that it is an

or a sign. it was very emotional. still is. >> robert kennedy is buried in arlington national cemetery, right next to his brother, john. in guatemala, a sudden increase in activity -- volcanic activity has trigger new evacuation orders. 75 people have died since the volcanoes eruption on sunday. 192 are listed as missing. smaller eruptions yesterday prompted new evacuation orders. and to make matters worse, torrential rainfall overnight is now mixing with ash and causing new flows of toxic materials out into the streets. >> the destruction is bigger than we expected. >> have you ever seen destruction this bad? >> no. this is the very first time in history. >> reporter: the volcano is about 30 miles from the capital of guatemala silly, -- guatemala city, home to 3 million people. the weather around the bay area is pretty gorgeous today.
