4:01 am
57 at cbs news headquarters in new york. i'm hena doba in for anne-marie green. final preparations are under way in singapore for tomorrow's historic summit between president trump and north korean leader kim jong-un. this morning mr. trump met with the prime minister of singapore before a working lunch. the president said he thinks tomorrow's meeting could work out very nicely. the standoff over the north's nuclear arsenal and a possible deal to officially end the korean war could top the agenda. it's the first meeting between a u.s. president and north korean leader. ben tracy is in singapore with more. ben, good morning. and, ben, what is expecting for this face-to-face between two unpredictable leaders? >> reporter: well, you used the right word, "unpredictable." it really is hard to tell. i think a lot of people are watching this very closely to watch out is this going to be some sort of meet-and-greet photo op relationship-building

kind of summit, or will there be nuts and bolts that come out of it. the north korean staid media say they're going to talk about serious things including what they call a peace-keeping m mechanism for the korean peninsula as well as denuclearization. it remains to be seen. president trump said he'll know in the very first moment if kim jong-un is serious about reaching a deal. >> and, ben, you mention president trump, but how significant of a trip is this for kim jong-un? >> reporter: it's a big deal. keep in mind kim jong-un has only left north korea four times. this is the fourth. two times to go to north korea's neighbor, a train ride, a short flight, and he took that

historic step across the dmz into south korea for the summit with president moon jae-in. getting on an airplane is a sign that he could leave and do a summit like. this he's also taking a real risk, talking about putting his nuclear weapons on the negotiating table is something north korea said it would never do. it has told its people for decades that this is the treasured sword of north korea, the only way to fight off an invasion by the evil united states. so sitting down with north korea is a risk for kim jong-un with his people back home. >> and the president seems to be downplaying any potential agreements after agreeing to a complete denuclearization. what's behind that? >> reporter: well, i think that's about managing expectations. the president himself has said he really doesn't know what the outcome of this will be. he has said no one has ever sat
4:04 am
down with kim jong-un and tried to negotiate these things. so i think that might be a reality check the president is putting out there that say, hey, if we get a big deal, that would be great. but this might be the first step in a very long process. in the past president trump has railed against the approach, criticized his predecessors for going down that road, but now he does seem to be opening up that avenue as maybe what will actually have to happen in the long run to get a deal with north korea. >> certainly a historic day. ben tracy in singapore. thanks, ben. ahead on "cbs this morning," jeff glor is leading our coverage on the summit in singapore along with major garrett and, of course, ben tracy. the president arrived in singapore following a contentious group meeting of seven in canada. the trump administration has engaged a no holds barred negotiation. in a canadian meeting over trade with justin true due.
