the threat to america?
3:34 am
the icbms or will he also try to address, south korea and japan's concerns? and so, american allies, south korea and japan will be zeroing in on will president trump address the entire program or one component. >> they're paying attention. >> the president did speak with president moon today of south korea and also, prime minister abe as well today. put the phone calls in. had the meetings. in person. ben tracy is with us as well. here in singapore. ben, you have been to north korea multiple times to see what the north said was a demolition of a nuclear site. there has been so much coverage of this in the united states, and worldwide, north koreans to some extent are all learning about this now. >> yeah, you know there is this giant big screen tv outside the main train station. in pyongyang where a lot of people see the news. they do know in north korea that kim jong-un is here in singapore
3:35 am
ith president trump.having the it is unlikely that they saw this moment of this handshake in real time. but they will see it eventually. this is going to be a surreal moment for them. you heard kim jong-un talk about old prejudices. those old prejudices run very deep in north korea. they have been told from an early age, the united states is evil. that it is hell bent on killing them. destroying their country. if this sum goes well and kim jong-un come out of this with a different relationship with the united states. they have to rip up that script in north korea start convincing people there, that the united states is now their friend. or at least not their mortal enemy. jeff. ben tracy, thanks. margaret brennan. heck of a task for kim jong-un, no? to potentially flip that script? >> the work is cut out for for the both of them. for kim jong-un, he has got to try to convince president trump to give him up front some of the financial relief he and his
3:36 am
people are desperate for. that means pullin back sanctions that the president said at least in the past he is not willing to do until he sees dismantlement of the nuclear program. what we know is up to this point, some of the work done by the trump administration has been to try to piece together a dream team of weapons inspectors and nuclear powers who would help the u.s., lead a dismantlement of all of these nuclear sites and do it quickly. and in a compressed time frame. compressed time frame is what you hear secretary of state, mike pompeo say. get in. do this quickly. they want to beat estimates that could take up to a decade. you know, president obama decided not to engage in di diplomacy in north korea in part, advisers told him, kim jong-un wouldn't beep serious until he had a weapon deliverable to u.s. shores. that's what he got shortly after president trump's inauguration. president trump, inherited that problem. president obama told him it would be the most pressing one
3:37 am
he faced. and that is why he flipped that script. that is why he is taking this meeting. president trump believing here that, that, you know in this most consequential meeting he has ever taken, somehow the skills he garnered over years in manhattan real estate will some how translate to an arms control agreement. and perhaps, this time, flipping the script is, is what may work. but we do know, that there are also lowering the bar here. if he can at a minimum get weapons inspectors on the ground. try to figure out what's real. what the real threat is here. even itch heave can't get kim jong-un to give up his weapons. if he can get an assessment how serious the threat to the u.s. really is. that would be a success. margaret brennan, thanks. we'll be right back after this break.

we continue our coverage of the historic summit in singapore. last night's meeting between president trump and kim jong-un came after a game changing realization. u.s. intelligence confirmed north korea now had the ability to launch a missile that could reach any part of the united states. in a story for 60 minutes. david martin went inside the american effort to track north korea's nuclear program. >> reporter: at the national air and space intelligence center, more than 100 photo interpreters, engineers, rocket scientists and intelligence
3:41 am
analysts pour through reams of data. last summer says commander, sean larkin, the north korean threat went to a whole new level. >> they demonstrated ability they could reach the continental united states. >> lower 48? >> yes. >> there were two tests in the month of of julie. both were launched at a very high angle so did not go far out to sea. but once they crunched the numbers. there was no doubt. had they been fired on standard trajectory they could have reached california and beyond. >> math is our secret weapon. there is lots of things that go into an icbm, or weapons systems that even if we dent hatch pieces of the puzzle we can do the math and figure what is missing. >> reporter: this is a computer simulation of the weapon the north koreans call the god of war. intercontinental ballistic missile. >> this is the actual code that we develop. >> produced by jeremy and team of analysts. >> can you take me through what this would look like on a
3:42 am
flight? >> yes. >> the first stage of the system is there to get it off the ground. get initial motion. but then, it will drop that stage. >> after the missile's engines have centered into space. all that is left is the re-entry vehicle. a warhead would be inside. as gravity pulls it back to earth. >> you are at the mercy of, of the atmosphere at that point. slamming into it. at many thousand of miles per hour. so that will have -- tremendous forces. imparted on the re-entry vehicle. >> what kind of temperatures are we talking about? >> many thousand of degrees. >> north korea cannot attack the u.s. with nuclear weapons until it develops a re-entry vehicle. that can stand that kind of heat. >> this is the setup before the test. >> hugh griffith says the head of the team that monitors the north korean missile program for the u.n. security council. he says these pictures released by the regime two years ago. were an attempt to prove it had succeeded. a wasje

to a rocket engine blast. >> is that a realistic test? >> we assess the two. wasn't sufficiently realisting to be credible. because the rocket engine is, does not create enough heat? >> correct. >> the heat -- produced by the rocket engine is not sa fishn't -- not sufficient to mimic. >> north korea released a picture of the scorched re-entry vehicle. this one of kim jong-un being shown how little had been burned away. >> the idea of this narrative is to prove that, yet another requirement of the nuclear and ballistic missile program has been achieved. >> just after thanksgiving last year. north korea test fired an even bigger icbm. this one had it been fired on a standard pra jektory cou standard trajectory could have reached anywhere in the united states. >> referred to ultimate weapon. they get to the target quickly. an icbm has re-entry velocity on
3:44 am
order of 4, 5 miles a sec on. there is very little time to react. >> tom boyd. senior intelligence analyst for ballistic missiles at told that they had yet to -- ultimately if they want to have confidence that the system works as intend they'd have to flight test it. and prove that that re-entry vehicle can survive realistic re-entry conditions. >> that really is -- then the moment of truth. >> when they launch, if they launch, a ballistic missile out over the pacific ocean. at a range of approximating what it would take to reach the united states. >> that would give them higher confidence that the system really works as they want it to. >> since that icbm lawn. in november, north korea has not conducted any more tests.
3:45 am
kim jong-un has declared his nuclear program a success. he even showed off what purported to be a thermal nuclear warhead. that shape is a two stage thermal nuclear weapon. what that essentially means, modern hydrogen bomb. >> he should know. he is a former director of los alamos national laboratory which designs american nuclear weapons. >> could they put that peanut shaped device on a missile. >> they definitely want us to think so. in the background, they actually show the warhead positioned in the nosecone of the missile which we interpreted to be icbm. >> just hours after the photos were released north korea conducted its sixth and largest nuclear test. in a remote underground site. u.s. intelligence estimated the device was many times more powerful than the bomb which destroyed hiroshima.
3:46 am
>> their confidence level is a mazing. it is amazing they go and show this thing and two hours later they detonate the weapon. >> he knows as much as any american about north korea's nuclear program. he has been there and seen it for himself. >> i was immensely surprised by how much they showed me and with the openness with which they showed and explained it to me. >> in 2004, the north koreans took him to a place. where they had been operating a small nuclear reactor. >> this is a reactor not very good for producing electricity. but very good for making plutonium. >> after showing him the reactor, the north koreans took him to a building where they claimed to be reprocessing, spent fuel from the reactor into weapons grade plutonium. >> they just showed me the facility and said, look, you have to believe us. we extracted the plutonium. didou believe them? >> the answer was yes.
3:47 am
but i didn't let them think that i believed them. >> his tour guide offered to show him the plutonium. >> they bring in, and a red metal box. about yea big. this thick. they open the metal box. they take out, a white wooden box. white wooden box has a slide off top. they slide off the top. and, i look in there. director says, over here, this class jar. that's our product. that's the plutonium. >> you know plutonium when you see it. >> plutonium by itself, silvery color if not oxidized. if it was oxidized it turns gray and black. this stuff was gray and black. >> this is what plutonium looks like, radioactive element produced the first nuclear explosion in july, 1 9s 45. >> i said i would look to hold the jar with the metal in it? they allowed me to hold it.
3:48 am
so what i learned from holding. first of all, plutonium is dense. it ought to be heavy. it was. the other thing, plutonium is radio active. so it, it, glass jar ought to be warm. it was warm. >> what impact did the information you came back with have on u.s. intelligence assessments of the north korean nuclear program? >> it changed from one of we don't know exactly what they have, if they have enough to make anything. to the fact that hey actually could have four to six bombs. >> fairly major change. >> a big change. >> the cbs "overnight news" will be right back.
