good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, later today, the justice department is scheduled to release a report on the fbi's handling of the special investigation into hillary clinton's email server. meanwhile the president's former personal lawyer is searching for a new legal team. laura podesta is here in new york with more. good morning, laura. >> good morning, anne-marie. the report to be released today could be a bombshell and provide more ammunition for president trump who has a history of discrediting the fbi. >> the justice department's watchdog will release a 500-page report criticizing how senior fbi officials handled the investigation of hillary clinton's private email server. >> this was done by pros in the james comey as insubordinate for his actions during the lead-up

to the presidential election. that includes his decision to announce just days before the polls opened that the fbi had reopened its probe into clinton's handling of the classified material. president trump fired comey in may of 2017. the report is expected to give mr. trump new reasons to criticize top law enforcement agencies as the special counsel's probe into russian interference in the election continues. on the investigation front, sources tell cbs news president trump's former personal lawyer michael cohen is under intense pressure from prosecutors who are investigating alleged fraud in his business dealings. the president's current personal attorney rudy giuliani said on fox news cohen is not cooperating with the special counsel. >> i checked into this last night. it's not so. he's not cooperating. nor do we care. the president has done nothing wrong. >> last week the president was asked about pardoning cohen to keep him from cooperating. >> he hasn't been convicted of

anything. it's far too early to be thinking about it. >> the president added he has the right to pardon himself but would never do it because he hasn't done anything wrong. we've learned michael cohen is looking for new attorneys, one based here in new york, to represent him. this is where fbi agents raided his office, home, and safety deposit box back in april. prosecutors are still combing through his seized records in trying to build a case, but there are no indications at this point that cohen has discussed a plea deal with them. anne-marie? >> laura podesta here in new york. thank you so much, laura. secretary of state mike pompeo insists north korea is committed to giving up its nuclear arsenal. pompeo is in seoul, south korea, to brief south korean and japanese officials on north korea's leader kim jong-un. pompeo says the u.s. wants the nort m diament steps withinhe next two years. the secretary admitted it will be a process, not an easy one, and that diplomacy could falter.

>> it could be the case that our effort will not work, but we're deine conditions so that we can right this failure of decades. >> pompeo also said the u.s. will resume war games with south korea if the north stops negotiating and that there will be no phased in sanctions released. the sanctions will be dropped only when there is denuclearization. cbs news has learned that white house press secretary sanders and her chief deputy plans to leave the white house. sanders told friends she plans on leaving the administration at the end of the year. she responded to the news on twitter. does cbs news know something about my plans and my future? i was at my daughter's year-end kindergarten event and they ran my story without even talking to me. i love my job and am honored to work for the president of the united states.

deputy secretary raj shah has not indicated his exact date for his departure. a tornado overnight caused extensive damage. high winds caused major damage to the wilkes-barre area. a shopping center sustained serious damage including a car dealership, a panera bread restaurant, and a barnes & noble. there are also overturned cars and downed power lines, and at least six people suffered minor injuries. the first guilty plea has been entered in the hissing death of a penn state university fraternity pledge. 21-year-old ryan burke pleaded guilty to nine charges. burke was accused of giving tim piazza a bottle of vodka at a party last year. piazza drank a dangerous amount of alcohol and fell a number of times, sustained fatal head and abdominal injuries. fraternity members did little to help him. an attorney for piazza said in a statement the parents of tim

pizza are pleased to see the first beta brother accept responsibility for his actions and encourages others who contributed in piazza's death to follow in his footsteps. an investigation found the fraternity engaged in hazing and dangerous behavior. the suspension follows two years of investigation. in march the fraternity was placed on probation for two years for similar violations as well as alcohol. the fraternity has five days to appeal. the las vegas police released more body cam video from last october's mass shooting at a concert. the video captures the chaos as the shooting began and police responded. stephen paddock fired down on

concertgoers from a room at the mandalay bay hotel to stop the gunfire. 58 people were killed and hundreds injured. and this morning firefighters are battling a string of wildfires out west. one has hit a tourist town in utah while thousands have been forced to evacuate in colorado. chris martinez has our report. >> reporter: hot and dry conditions are fueling several wildfires in the state of colorado. the largest one near durango has already burned more than 27,000 acres and is just 15% contained. >> the folks on the ground have not caught a break since the day this fire started, and they know that they've got probably another 48 hours of really tough work ahead of them. eporter: since the fire began june 1st, more than 2,100 homes have been evacuated. >> that fire just exploded and created a vortex, which was throwing flames down the mountain.

>> reporter: west of denver, another wildfire has forced the evacuation of about 1,400 homes near ski country. >> we just want to make sure we give the firefighters the tools that they need at the time that they need it. >> reporter: in utah, multiple structures were destroyed by a fast-moving fire on tuesday, including eight homes. janet gay is among those having to pick up and rebuild. >> it's hard. we're retired and it's all we have. >> reporter: in recent days other wildfires have broken out in california, new mexico, and wyoming. firefighters say it's an explosive start to a fire season expected to intensify across the west this summer. chris martinez, cbs news, los angeles. coming up on the "morning news," disturbing threat. a maryland man is accused of targeting two high-profile senators. and why green gemstones are falling out of the sky in hawaii. this is the "cbs morning news." also in footcare? absolutely.

green gemstones are raining down in hawaii, and a man is accused of threatening senators. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. politico reports man attempted to kill bernie sanders and kamala harris. a federal grand jury indicted nicholas bukowski in april, but it wasn't revealed until yesterday. he was accused of making threats on april 24th. that was the same day as the "march for our lives" gun rally in washington, d.c. the "los angeles times" reports prosecutors are reviewing a sexual assault allegation against actor sylvester stallone. the alleged victim claims the assault took place in the 1990s. she reported it to the police in santa monica last november. stallone's attorney says the actor had a consensual dating relationship with the woman years ago, but denied the claim.

the "washington post" looks at a study and says antarctic ice loss has tripled in the last decade. they've reported over 200 tons of antarctic ice are pouring into the ocean. if it continues, some scientists' worst fears about region ocean levels could be realized. in the last 25 years, the ocean's level has risen about 0.3 of an inch. "people" reports kim kardashian met with alice marie johnson. that's the woman kardashian helped release from prison. the reality star met the 63-year-old grandmother yesterday in memphis. last week president trump commuted johnson's life sentence on drug charges days after kardashian pleaded her case at the oval office. johnson released an instagram

fans of colombia's soccer team could not contain their excitement in russia as the 2018 world cup kicks off today. colombia is one of 32 teams competing from around the world. the first match this morning is between the host russian team and saudi arabia. now, they're the two lowest seeded teams in the tournament. matches will take place in 11 russian cities over the course of 32 days, and we found out yesterday that the 2026 world cup will be played in three countries, the u.s., canada, and mexico. the unusual three-nation partnership beat out morocco. metlife stadium oust side of new york city in new jersey is the proposed site for the championship match. on the "cbs moneywatch,"

apple closes an iphone security loophole, and there's a boost. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, diane. >> good morning, anne-marie. the economy is gaining steam, so the federal reserve is accelerating plans to raise interest rates to between 1.75% and 2%. the central bank also indicated it plans to raise rates twice more this year. that move is expected to send a ripple through the economy, triggering a rise in rates for consumer products like credit cards and adjustable rate mortgages. jerome powell said the economy is in great shape. following the interest rate hike, stocks lost ground. the dow tumbled 119 points, the s&p 500 fell 11 points. the nasdaq lost 8 points. shares of 20th century fox stocks soared. the comcast bid is a direct challenge to the bid on a ruling

that approves at&t's takeover of time warner. comcast says fox's international presence like sky tv is a reason for its key offer. the fox television network and fox cable channels are not part of the deal. they expect disney to make a counter offer. apple is making changing to make it more difficult for fbi to crack the device. apple says trying to protect countries where police seize phones at will. apple says it will protect all customers from hackers trying to extract sensitive information. the move comes as things heat up over user communications. and beginning this morning you can legally start placing pets on sporting events in new jersey. the bogota casino in atlantic city will be the first to start taking bets. so far others have not made

video released this week shows a politician being targeted for murder. manuel bojorquez has more. >> reporter: this surveillance video shows mexican congressional candidate fernando puron posing with a supporter when a man walks up from behind, raises a gun, and fires point blank at the back of his head. he was running on a platform which made him a target. he's now one of 113 candidates and politicians who's been murdered since last september. we reached the current mayor sonia villareal who said her life was threatened just yesterday. >> you're not fearing them. >> no. >> wow. por que? >> no. >> even if it risks your life. >> si. >> reporter: she did put her investigation on hold as they investigate puron's death. the wave of violence comes as an estimated 15,000 candidates run for the highest positions mexico government has ever had. the cartels want to eliminate candidates who threaten their ability to kidnap, extort, and smuggle illegal drugs to the world's number one consumer, the u.s. but they're not just targeting politicians. we want to find out what's being done to bring about justice. last summer reporting from cnn on assignment, we reported mexico had become the most dangerous country in the western hemisphere for reporters. we spoke with carlos lauria who's pushing for better security. >> it's impeding the possibility of mexicans to engage in a public relation over the lives of mexicans. >> reporter: the mayor we spoke with, sonia villareal, plans to
