good morning from the studio 57 cbs headquarters in new york. i'm hena doba in for anne-marie green. this morning heat advisories or warnings are posted from north carolina to maine. triple-digit heat indices are expected. the national weather service says more than 113 million americans are affected. laura podesta is here in new york. laura, good morning. >> good morning, hena. cooling centers have been opened along the east coast. if you couldn't find an air conditioner, a dip in a pool, pond, or lake was a must. unfortunately there's no relief in sight. in some areas, the heat wave is expected to last through the july 4th holiday. people did everything they could to stay cool this weekend. >> we've been in the swimming pool. >> going inside.

>> going inside and watching movies. >> we're at about 140 degrees on the asphalt. right there, 140, yep. >> in harrisburg, pennsylvania, temperatures hit 95 degrees on sunday. the captain says even his crew needs to consider the heat this week. >> our gear does not breathe, so we tend to overheat. >> 96 in new york, 95 in st. louis, 104 is what it's going to feel like in memphis, tennessee. >> at this ace hardware store, people are out of luck. they sold out of their air conditioners. in atlanta, one atlanta church is holding a cooling drive, collecting fans to pass out to seniors in need. in iowa, it wasn't heat but heavy rains that created problems over the weekend. flash flooding caused frightening drama at a hotel in

urbandale. this pool room quickly filled up with rainwater after a door broke. the flooding in des moines turned deadly when it killed a local sportscaster. 66-year-old larry cotlar was killed after he was swept into a creek by the rushing water saturday night. the flooding is also being blamed on a gas explosion that destroyed a duplex in iowa. festivals say it was caused by a gas leak after high waters put out the pilot light. no one was injured in that explosion. hena? >> laura podesta here in new york. thanks, laura. the heat is also playing a role out west, helping fuel out-of-control wildfires. two major fires are burning in california. the so-called county fire started saturday and has burned 32 acres about 50 miles west of sacramento. fire has forced hundreds to evacuate.

another fire in lake county has destroyed at least 20 buildings. in colorado, there have been over 41,000 acres and forced 2,000 forced to leave their homes. over the weekend jesper jorgensen was charged with starting the fire. the president said he has narrowed his potential nominees to seven candidates. meanwhile a key senator says she would never support anyone she thinks would overturn roe v. wade. >> i think we're gong have support from democrats if it's the right person. >> reporter: on sunday, president trump announced his supreme court nominee will be confirmed soon as he finds a replacement for retiring justice anthony kennedy who has been a itwinge choices like abortion.

michigan. she talked to her mother by phone, but she had not seen her in two months. the "washington post" reports a man was arrested after shouting womp womp and pulling a gun on protesters n in huntsvill huntsville. >> oh, my god, oh, my god. he just shot a gun. >> police say the 34-year-old man pushed one of the protesters on saturday and the protester pushed him back, knocking him to the ground. that's when authorities say he pull out the gun. he was booked into jail on misdemeanor charges of menacing and reckless endangerment. "the new york times" says rescue divers in thailand are making progress as they search for a boy's soccer team and a coach in a flooded mountain

a caribbean vacation turned into a nightmare when a boat carrying 12 tourists including ten americans exploded in the bahamas on saturday. one woman in the u.s. was killed. seven others were hurt. the cause of the explosion is under investigation. demarco morgan has more. >> move the boat? >> reporter: panicked boater saw a similar tourist vessel in distress on saturday morning. the boat's engine reportedly exploded, causing a raging fire and black smoke. chris topperwien took this video. >> we saw boats sitting there and threaten was this weird noise and a flame shot up. within a few seconds, the boetd w boat was on fire. >> reporter: the coast guard deployed their plane. the coast guard flew and took some to the hospital.

four were taken back to the air station. six others were airlifted from the scene to a hospital in nassau. it appears that at least one victim was rescued by those boating along the way. topperwien said everyone was helping as much as they could. >> we were able to take all the passengers from their boat to our boat and rescue them. there was a tourist from denmark who helped a lot. >> the coast guard tells cbs news it's expecting the state department or the u.s. embassy to release the name of the american killed. one victim who jumped into the water risked their own life to help others. cbs news, new york. a search is under way to find out who stole the life savings of a texas resident believed to be the oldest man in the u.s.the mily of 112--year-o richard overton said social security and banking account numbers were used to make

our top stories this morning. a holiday heat wave has folks from the midwest to new england suffering in near record-high temperatures. temperatures near 100 degrees are expected in many areas, and the heat wave is expected to last through at least independence day. this morning heat advisories or warnings are in effect from north carolina to maine. police say timmy kinner was seeking revenge when he stab nine people at a boise, idaho, complex. the victims were attending a birthday for a young girl. six were between the ages of 3 and 12. police say kinner was staying at the apartment complex but had been asked to leave. his former roommates were not home when he return, so he allegedly decided to randomly
