♪ good morning to our viewers in the west, it's wednesday july 4, 2018. happy birthday, america and welcome back to cbs this morning. rescue efforts continue to get 12 stranded boys and their soccer coach out of a flooded cave in thailand. we'll talk to an expert about the difficulties they face. plus the summer blockbusters that are bringing fans back to the multi-plex and other movies that are opening soon. but first, here is today's eye opener at 8:00. the dangerous heat wave has turned deadly. more than 103 million americans are under heat alerts. . thousands will be working to stay cool here at jones beach. they're expecting temperatures to feel like 96 degrees. >> it is going to feel close to 100 degrees out here. as hundreds of thousands of people come out for the annual

>> hopefully we'll be cooling off soon. i'm bianna golodryga with alex wagner and anthony mason. gayle and norah and john are off. happy fourth to them and you. you mentioned the heat and dangerous heat stretching from coast to coast and making it tough for firefighters battling more than 60 large western wildfires. two of the most destructive are in southern colorado and northern california. thousands of people have been forced from their homes. >> in the east, at least three deaths are being blamed on the heat. temperatures are expected to soar into the 90s and half of the country today, it will feel like triple digits in memphis, columbus and detroit. jericka duncan is on long island. it is early and hot. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, a lot of visitors already here at jones beach.

about 150,000 are expected to visit side. temperatures at 96 degrees in some places. as we are closer to the ocean, it's 10 degrees cooler than if you were to go five, ten miles in town. heat advisories have been issued throughout most of the east and midwest. the national weather service warning people to take extra precautions, especially when spending time outside, saying that you should wait to do any strenuous activity until the evening. but keep in mind, just because it's the evening, doesn't mean it's not hot. some cities like burlington, vermont have recorded their highest low temperatures of all time. recently they recorded a low of 80 degrees. now if you like the heat, then you're in for more of this weather. temperatures are expected to remain in the 90s and half the country at least until friday. heavy rains expected in

thailand are increasing the pressure to rescue 12 boys and their soccer coach, trapped in a cave. the thai navy releasing new video showing the boys underground. new flooding could make it harder to get the boys out or reach them with fresh supplies. ben tracy filed this report from thailand on the effort to bring them to safety. >> reporter: good morning. so officials say it is still to dangerous to attempt a rescue mission, but they are trying to install a phone line inside the cave, so the boys can finally talk to their parents. now in newly-released video, the boys appear to be in good spirits and smiling as they interact with divers and medics and they are wrapped in foil medics and treated with antibiotics with cuts on the feet and legs and they are practicing wearing diving masks and breathing, but he does not believe they have attempted any practice dives. he said the boys may all come out as they are ready rather than all coming out at the same time.

now they are located about 2.5 miles from the cave entrance. they need to get through areas requiring climbing gear and parts too narrow for scuba tanks and a 100 foot under water dive. of course that would be challenging for those who are trained to do that sort of thing. and that is challenging for someone trained and the other option is to let the water recede or figure out a way to pump it out faster. bianna. >> ben tracy, thank you. it is just -- you can't even wrap your head around what these parents must be going through. what they were going through the ten days prior to finding their children and now knowing they can't see them -- face-to-face. at least they could talk to them. >> and the prospect that they may be in there for longer than anybody wants them to be in there. >> they've already been in there longer than anybody wants. >> weeks and possibly months. >> it seems imperative to try to get them out. >> they appear to be in good spirits. and i believe that we do have our expert with us. anmar mirsa is from the rescue cave commission and has 30 years of experience in cave missions and he's joining us from bloomington, indiana.

thank you anmar, for coming on. this is just an incredible rescue story, but clearly it's not over yet because the boys aren't out. you said this is one of the most difficult rescues that you've come across thus far. explain what the rescuers are going to have to do now to get the boys out. >> well of course initially we were looking at three primary options of getting them out. the diving option which has been discussed. the waiting for the water to go down for a lull in the rain to allow them to pump it down enough to get out on their own. and then there was the potential for putting another entrance in either by drilling or by finding and exploiting a natural ooikast option option and they are focusing more on the first two. so at this point -- it is really up to what the weather does to see what the best option is going to be. >> anmar, when we talk about the dive, for folks that don't know, it is a treacherous dive even for seasoned divers, is it not.

>> absolutely. cave divers, who specialize in closed and overhead environments train for hundreds of hours to be able to do it. it is a very easy thing to start to do. but the problem is that it is a very difficult thing to plan for and be ready for all of the contingencies and the problem becomes that the contingencies are what could be fatal. panicking and losing your mask, having an issue with the equipment in an environment where you are enclosed is incredibly dangerous. >> so you are talking about training potentially a dozen kids here to dive their way out of this cave. how challenging is that? how long would that take? >> well, that is going to depend on the kpin si of the moment. if they have the time, they could take the time they need until the people training them feel they are ready.

if the flooding situation worsened to the point they need to try to do something, then they have to weigh the risk versus the potential benefit there. and regardless of which option is used, whether it is a diving or waiting for the water to go down there are risks involved. so there are no good choices. >> talk about the risks of keeping the boys there for potentially four more months as the regional governor suggested they may have to do. >> the primary risk is the risk of enough rain and -- or a failure of the pumping system to allow the area where they are in which is safe to become flooded and for them not to have a safe zone inside the cave. te cal is they may have pslogica issues. thos dffect thoup as e ineneral. >> and at let od andedical supplies from the pictures we've seen, they appear to be in good spirits. so that is important. anmar mirza thank you for joining us. >> you're welcome.
