>> that's the overnight news for this monday. from the cbs bro ♪ it's monday, july 9th, 2018. this is the "cbs morning news." as the world watches, waits and prays, crews in thailand prepare to rescue the nine remaining soccer players trapped in a cave. president trump is expected to unveil his pick for the next u.s. supreme court justice today. he says an exceptional person will be chosen. we take a look at the possible final four contenders, and wildfires spurred by drought and hot temperatures rage on in california.

good morning from the studio 57 newsroom. good to be with you. i'm annmarie green. this morning in thailand, the next phase to rescue members of a soccer team in thailand trapped in a flooded cave is under way. eight boys and their coach remain under ground. four boys were brought out yesterday and said to be in good condition. the same divers who rescued them are taking part in the next operation, but there are heavy rains in the area and fears of rising water are pushing the rescue effort. ben tracy is near the cave where the boys are trapped. ben, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. phase two of this operation is under way. ha they're going in to try to get the next group of boys out. we don't know precisely when the operation began. yesterday it took about eight hours from the time the divers were with the boys in the cave

until they got them out. we can assume once they goat that point, that's the luff time frame we're dealing with here. as for the four boys who were rescued yesterday, they were immediately put on helicopters, transferred by ambulance, then to hell cop ters and back to an ambulance, then to the hospital where they will be evaluated for the next three to five days. at the hospital is where they're going to be reunited with their families. we're told there's a 24-hour evaluation period and their families will actually be able to see them. in terms of the next phase of the operation, a source is telling us they're hoping to rescue six more boys today and the remaining three people tomorrow. keep in mind, we believe the 25-year-old soccer coach is also still in the cave, so we have eight boys and one coach still in there. they've added five more divers to the elite team of divers trying to get the boys out. they are doing that because they would like to speed this up. they feel they are racing

against time and the weather. if we get more heavy rains, it could flood this cave again and make this kind of rescue effort nearly impossible. we're told each boy has been briefed on the plan and cleared by a doctor. one of the thai officials have said the boys are willing to face what it takes to getscue e of the boys already brought to the surface. meantime back at home, president trump plans to announce his nominee to replace retiring supreme court justice anthony kennedy tonight. but the president says he still hasn't made up his mind, though he's very close and that an exceptional person will be chosen. laura pod des toe is here in new york. >> president didn't name his topics, but narrowed it to four people from an initial list of 25.

whoever is chosen he says he hopes will serve 40 to 45 kbreeryears. president trump was still deciding on a supreme court nominee as he traveled back from his new jersey golf club yesterday. >> there's four people. they're excellent, every one, you can't go wrong. i'm close to making a final decision. the four are believed to be amy coney barrett, thom mass hard man, cavanaugh and kev lidge. confirmation process in the senate where republicans hold a slim majority. he or she is replacing justice anthony kennedy, a moderate conservative who sided with liberals. cavanaugh and kegt ledge formerly clerked for kennedy.

hardiman was the first runner up to neil gorsuch. >> republicans are holding four lottery tickets and all are winners. >> reporter: democrats think otherwise and hope to convince at least one republican to vote no and block the nomination. >> it will affect reproductive choice and individual freedom for millions of women all over the united states. it will affect consumer protection, veermtal protection, lbgt rights. >> reporter: if republicas stick together, there's nothing democrats can do to stop the confirmation. >> democrats say the vote should wait until after the midterm elections. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell blocked president obama's nominee merrick garland in 2016 citing the election as an opportunity to let voters have a choice in the decision. mcdonnell says the midterms aren't the same and plans to hold a vote this fall. cbs news will bring you a special report when the president announces his nominee

for the supreme court and you can see it at 9:00 eastern. president trump leaves tomorrow for europe for a meeting with nato leaders and vladimir putin. he's at odds over defense spending and trade. mr. trump threatened to stop protecting nato nations he feels are not paying their share. it appears unlikely that the trump administration will meet tomorrow's deadline to reunite children who were separated from their parents at the border. on friday the administration asked a federal judge for more time, the judge stuck to the deadline. another hearing is planned for today. the american civil libber difficults union says there are 102 children under the age of 5 who must be reunited with their family tomorrow. it expects less than half the cases will be resolved. the death of a british woman

poisoned by the same nerve agent by a russian spy is considered murder. a man also poisoned remains in critical condition. police say sturgess and the man touched an item. russia denied any involvement. in the atlantic this morning, tropical storm beryl are expected to move south of the virgin islands and puerto rico while chris gains strength. chris expected to become a hurricane sometime today. the projected path keeps it off the u.s. east coast. swells generated by chris are expected to affect the coast of the mid atlantic states during the next few days. out west, the trouble remains fire. a new wildfire in northern

california, the grant fire briefly shut down a highway last night about 40 miles east of oakland. it's about 20% contained. the grant fire is one of many burning in california spurred by drought and hot temperatures. f upland on the border of oregon. >> reporter: the fast moving clam thon fire has now destroyed 72 structures and threatening hundreds more as it spreads over 30,000 acres. the flames killed one person and injured two firefighters including brandon feller who suffered severe burns when his engine caught fire. this blaze near san diego burned captain mike fas i don't's ears. >> as soon as the wall of flaechl hit me, i knew i was burned. it wasn't that bad to where i was going to go down. >> reporter: he returned to the fire in alpine. more than a dozen wildfires are burning in california and there

are spot fires like this, too, under oppressive heat and dry conditions. >> i was in the house and i saw flames rise above the golf course. the flames came right up to my back lawn. >> reporter: near santa barbara where flames destroyed at least ten homes, residents returned to almost ghostly scenes. others recalled the rush to save their animals. >> we were driving through a wall of flames. >> reporter: heavy rains triggered mudslides like this one in intern county where the scorched hurt couldn't hold back the water. across the region, the weekend's triple digit heat overwhelmed the power grid using crews scrambling to restore electricity to thousands. search and rescue efforts are under way to western japan following days of deadly flooding. at least 100 people have been

out the flames. police did not identify the person who was killed. it's not clear what caused the crash. the faa and ntsb will investigate. "the new york times" reports world health officials were stunned when the u.s. opposed a resolution to encourage breast-feeding. the times says delegates expected a quick and easy passage. the resolution was based on decades of research showing the benefits of breast milk. they said the u.s. pushed instead for the interest of companies that make infant formulas and even threatened companies that wouldn't go ahead. "sports illustrated" says a fight broke out at an amateur basketball game in the atlanta. cell phone video shows several players attacking an official who can be seen laying on the court. other officials rush over and the violence escalates. for ensaiting the fight. local police are investigating. massachusetts live says the

maintain close trade ties. they say it's a betrayal of the promise for a clean break. davis said it would leave britain in a weakened position. may disagreed. this morning u.s. and china release inflation figures. for the weeks stocks finished harder in part due to friday's strong payrolls report. over the weekend, the trump administration announced it was freezing payment that protects health ensurers with sicker patients from financial losses. last year the risk adjustment program paid out $10.4 billion. under the affordable care act, it redistributes profits to companies with sicker enroll lees. it's expected to add to premiums next year. the box office pull is large.
