destroys complexes and forces people from their homes. good morning from the cbs 57 studio at cbs headquarters here in new york. i'm anne-marie green. president trump is in brussels, belgium this morning for the start of a two-day summit that promises some confrontation with some of the european closest allies. he's attacked the alliance and again this morning pushed nato members to pay more for defense. laura podesta is here in new york with the details. good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. the president railed against germany, saying it was, kwoes, very inappropriate that the u.s. was paying for defense against russia while germany is doing gas deals with moscow. the president's strong comments just one early sign that this but warm and fuzzy.

president trump met with nato secretary-general jens stoltenberg this morning. stoltenberg thanked the other countries. it's the first major gathering of western countries since the g7 in canada where president trump clashed be the other leaders. while leaving the white house yesterday, the president wasted no time complaining that member nations pay too little on defense spending. >> nato has not treated us fairly, but i think we'll work something out. >> so far this year only five of 29 nato countries spent 2%. there is concern about the last leg of the president's trip both abroad and at home.

>> and i have putin. fankly, putin may be the easiest of them all. who would think. >> what would be disastrous for us is to have a negative nato meeting and then do something with putin that further destabilizes the relationship. >> president and president putin meet in helsinki next week. and that meeting is expected to be one on one without any aides present. yesterday when leaving the white house president trump would not say whether putin was a friendn say the boys took care of themselves while they were

trapped. most lost ababout four pounds. the first g group of four rescu is eatating normal mealals, wal, and visiting with their parents. the last, the coach, came out yesterday. >> reporter: the daring rescue mission ended in cheers. the excitement could hardly be contained. we're not sure if this is a miracle, a science, or what read a facebook post. former medics and navy thai s.e.a.l.s were the last to emerge. almost all of the rescues were flown in helicopters and then driven in ambulances to a chiang rai hospital. officials there confirmed the first four rescued can stand up and walk but they can't go far because of the risk of infection. rainwater soon started filling

the cave forcing them deeper inside before they found dry ground. that's where british divers found them ten days later alive and in good health. preparations for a rescue took days and involved pumping out millions of gallons of water, drilling through hard rock, and mapping the tunnels where they would have to swim through dark narrow passageways. each was guided by two divers, one in front and one in back. they were given anti-anxiety medication to keep them calm. in all, dozens carried out the rescue in three waves over three days. when it was all over, everyone simply wanted to see the boys. i want to hug them first said another one of the boys' coaches. i want to cheer them on. ve bnt to tell them howried

reunite all children under the age of 5 with their children. the deadline was yesterday and only a few of the children were reunited with their families. some immigrantn to the u.s. bute to wear ankle monitors. before leaving for europe yesterday, president trump said the solution was to tell people don't come to the u.s. illegally. two firefighters were inj e injured by a massive explosion in a wisconsin town. they were ee evacuating residents when a powerful blast rocked downtown madison. a contractor struck a natural gas main which led to the explosion and several buildings were leveled. firefighters were battling the fires late into the night and residents say the explosion was so strong it lifted buildings. >> there was this big boom and it knocked me to the ground and i felt it. it took the breath out of my

california fire investigators are trying to determine what caused a brushfire in one of los angeles's most popular parks. flames quickly spread across the hillside of griffith park yesterday afternoon. it forced more than 2,000 people from the famous griffith observatory. some cars parked in the area were damaged, but no one was hurt. there may soon be a new way to visit the famous hollywood sign, and a plane crash in alaska is under investigation. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the "anchorage daily news" reports a small plane crashed with only minor injuries. it crashed on prince of wales island south of ketchikan where it was headed. the pilot called 911 after the crash. poor weather made for low

visibility and made it difficult for investigators to find the crash site. an investigation by tennessee health officials found e. coli in water caused the sickness of ab55p lira authorities say initial tests on water samples from the zip line canopy tour found the bacteria in the company's water. the state health department contacted people who were at the site between mid-june and early july. more than 500 reported being sick. and "the hollywood reporter" says warner brothers wants to build a tramway linking its burbank film lot to the iconic hollywood sign. the studio is now owned by at&t. it says it will pay an estimated $100 billion to build the skyway. it's a los angeles landmark, but it's difficult to get to. the plan must pass environmental impact studies though. and still to come, raising trad china's reaction as the u.s.

shot in the trade war with china. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, diane. >> good morning, anne-marie. the united states is preparing to hit another $200 billion worth of chinese imports with 10% tariffs. this morning china called the move totally unacceptable and promised countermeasures. thousands of chinese products will be targeted. everything from burglar alarms to fish sticks. the new tariffs will not be imposed for two months following a public hearing, according to an administration official. last friday they slapped 25 tariffs on billions of dollars worth of chinese imports. the trump administration says china is hurting the u.s. by stealing technology. china retaliated by placing tariffs on chinese imports. senate finance chairman orrin hatch called the latest round of import taxes reckless. it's sending stock futures sharply lower this morning. now yesterday the stocks on wall

street finished higher for the fourth day in a row. the dow rallied 143 points. the s&p 500 added 9 points. the nasdaq gained 3 points. pfizer says it is holding off on raising drug prices after warning from president trump. when pfizer and other u.s. drugmakers raised prices at beginning of this month, the president said his administration would respond. he spoke with the president of pfizer on the phone. yesterday he tweeted, quote, we applaud pfizer for this decision and hope other countries do the same. and american airlines is ditching plastic straws. in a move to be more eco-friendly, american is replacing plastic straws and drink stirrers with plastic. it started in its lounges and continues on its planes. it will eliminate more than than 71,000 pounds of plastic a year. anne-marie?

our top story this morning, president trump is in brussels for a two-day nato summit. the meeting with some of the closest european allies is expected to be contentious. mr. trump again today pressed them. following the nato summit he meets with russia's president, vladimir putin, next week. mr. trump said that would be the easiest part of his four-nation tour. and a massive explosion rocked downtown madison, wisconsin, last night. a police officer and two firemen responding to a gas leak were injured as they evacuated civilians. several civilians suffered minor injuries. officials say worker hit a natural gas maine which led to the explosion. and in thailand, 12 members of a soccer team who were trapped in a flooded cave for
