their son, ben. a man calling for the u.s. and russia to ban nuclear weapons was forcibly removed from the room. meanwhile, outside, thousands demonstrated against the president and vladimir putin. demonstrators in helsinki carried an array of messages and signs with calls to take global warming seriously. protests were also held up the capital in finland. today the san francisco administration has ordered a stop to family deportation. that is until the government response to the aclu allegations that there would be improper math deportations. the trump administration says it has completely reunited all children under the age of five with their parents. noncitizens are being allowed to vote in school

elections. >> reporter: on the steps of city hall, a historic day. noncitizen parents can register to vote for school board elections in san francisco. this comes after san francisco voters approved proposition and. it gives documented and undocumented residents the right to vote. they must be at least 18 years old and parents of children under the age of 19 in san francisco. noneligible are those on parole for conviction of a felony or those found mentally incompetent. the federal government can have access to motor information. >> we give people the choice. we are saying they need to be registered but what we are advising people to do is to meet with somebody from one of

these community-based organizations that can actually educate them on their rights and the risk of voting. the deadline for noncitizen parents to vote for the november elections for school board in san francisco is october 22. if you miss that deadline you could come to city hall for conditional voter registration. i'm jessica florez for kpix5. the right to vote in school board elections expires in 2022 unless another proposition is passed. the all divorces -- the oath of office was administered to valley brown as the new supervisor. brown has been described as the eyes and ears of the community. >> as your supervisor, i can't do it around.

radioactive soil. we tell you what this means for the company that may be responsible for that contamination. the state department of public health is doing ground surveys including gamma radiation scans to clear up questions about the safety of the soil. this land used to be a navy shipyard where radioactive material was dumped during world war ii. once it closed, the federal government hired contractors to clean it up. one of the companies former employees admitted to falsifying test results for radioactivity. it is now the subject of a lawsuit involving thousands of residents. >> you have no concerns? >> no.

>> the navy is paying for the testing today. it will be focused on open areas including streets and sidewalks over the next few weeks. if the state finds traces of radioactive activity, further testing will be done. the results of the tests are due this fall. in hunter's point for kpix5. >> the testing will start at 12:30 pm today. firefighters are trying to get a handle on a deadly fire along the edge of yosemite park. the ferguson fire is just two -- 2 % contained. 36-year-old brading garney was killed when his bulldozer rolled over in steep terrain. he was cutting a firebreakat the time. smoky morning commutfor folks in the east bay. a grass fire broke out around 7:00 a.m. on eastbound 780 at 680.

crews worked on putting out the flames. there was a detour put in place. the fire was knocked down in less than an hour. the lease are investigating a shooting that left one person injured. it happened last night near san miguel road and hanford avenue. so far there is no word on a motive or arrest. a woman is in the hospital after her minivan collided with an amtrak train. this happened near the 880 over crossing at sampson boulevard. the crossing arms did not come down according to the woman. no word on her condition. an oregon woman missing for a week is found alive after plunging off of a deep cliff. now she is sharing her incredible story of survival. drivers are all too familiar with long lines at dmv offices. when you could see some relief from those growing wait times.

vive. we are learning a lot more about the oregon woman his car plunged over a cliff and she somehow managed to survive. angela burnett was found badly injured on a remote beach in monterey county last friday. she had been driving along highway 1 on july 6 when she swerved to avoid hitting an animal. her car plunged 250 feet off a cliff. hernandez remained amid the record for a full week with alterable broken bones before

hikers found her. >> she is very lucky. someone was watching over her, not only during that 250 foot plunge but the entire seven days she was down there. >> the monterey county sheriff's office said most people would not survive. he called angela an amazing woman. the soccer team rescued from a cave in thailand is on the mend. these are pictures of all 12 boys recovering at the hospital. they are smiling and even giving a thumbs up to the camera there. the divers who led these boys to safety are speaking out about the dangerous rescue mission. >> they did have sedation to keep them calm. the worst thing that could happen could be one of them panicking. >> i had never done anything as risky as that.

and i don't think i ever will again. it was the only option we had. over the weekend, a funeral was held to honor the navy seal that died during the rescue effort. clouds are starting to move out but as you can see from the tall tower, there is still a bit of that low-level marine layer hanging out. that makes the golden gate bridge slightly obscured. but the temperatures are relatively cool. things are starting to heat up. it is 61 in san francisco. 78 in concorde, 70 degrees in santa rosa and livermore is already 81 degrees. you can see how that low lying -- those low -- low-lying clouds have moved in. it will not get much further off of the coast than this so that means we will pretty much have an overcast beach day for those of you who are going to use your day to go to the beach.

in the meantime, this high pressure system is going to move in. it will keep those teer it will continue to get warmer throughout the week. about the second half of the week, we will start to see this. these brain patches are monsoon moisture. our headlines for today, mostly sunny. warmer for most areas and hotter in the inland areas. along the coast and along the bay, things will remain mild. our high to pitchers for today are coolest along the coast. 90 degrees in union city -- 78 degrees in union city. in the east bay you will see the warmest apertures. 93 in fairfield and livermore as well as pleasanton. they are 80 in concorde

already. a mix of 60s and 70s around the bay. 69 degrees in berkeley and 66 in san francisco. sausalito is warmer at 86 degrees. these are the warmest temperatures that we will see today in the north bay. triple digits in clear lake and those temperatures will continue to climb through the week. sunset tonight will be 8:30 pm and sunrise tomorrow will be 6:01 am. we do have a warming trend looking at the five day forecast. that will continue through the week. on wednesday we will start to see changes take effect with the monsoon moisture that will move in. it is going to be really hot during the first half of the week and muggy for the second half of the week. i think, as far as hair days are concerned, because i'm sure you are worried about that, it is going to be terrible and

muggy. the dmv is admitting that it's lines are too long. so it is extending hours across the bay area. the dmv is blaming the looming real id card. the department it was awarded $23 million to offer --. >> there are tens of thousands of people in california who are being mistreated with these long lines. >> we are hoping to improve our service. >> 14 dmv these will open including the drivers license processing center. let's take a look at the big board right now. the dow is up just about eight points. and it is like lack friday but in july. amazon kicked off the fourth annual prime day today.

but for this week's students rising above scholar.. teaching middle schoolers is her dream job. kpix 5's christin ayers has anyone that has spent any time in a classroom filled with 13-year-olds can tell you it can be a big challenge. average -- student rising above is working with just that. >> reporter: sabrina could be spending the summer at the beach. instead, the 20 rolled students rising above is teaching kids leadership skills. stuff like integrity and self- awareness as well as honesty. >> they are brutally honest.

it is kind of hard but they are fun. >> she is a college intern for the partners program. it is an open program for college students. they must volunteer during the school year and the summer. sabrina was a natural choice for the job. >> she had this inner drive. we felt like she would fit right into being a leader and a role model. >> it is not just about academics. many face challenges outside the classroom. that is something that sabrina knows about first-hand. >> they need people who care about them and support them. >> as a teenager she needed extra support as well. shoe was homeless and struggling to care for her mom who was diagnosed with cancer and parkinson's disease. >> it taught me how to grow up pretty fast.

today's tip of the day is going to be white peaches. when you buy white peaches, you wet dark pink and light red color all the way around. the less green, the better. a little give to the touch but not too much. and on white peaches, peel so easily. bring them home gently in the bag, put them on the counter and you will know when they are ready to eat. here is what i like to do. for dessert, a nice glass of wine. i cut up the white peaches and put them in a glass of wine before dinner. after dinner i meet the peaches
