so when i met with president putin for about two and a half hours, we talked about numerous things, and among those things are the problems that you see in the middle east, they are very much involved. we are very much involved. i entered the negotiations with president putin from a position of tremendous strength. our economy is booming, and our military is being funded 700 billion this year, $716 billion next year. and will be more powerful as a military than we have ever had before. president putin and i addressed the range of issues starting with the civil war in syria and the need for humanitarian aid and help for people in syria. thold therke of iran and the ams and th dstabilizing activities taking place in iran.

as most of you know we ended the iran deal which was one of the worst deals anyone could imagine and that has had a major impact on iran and it has substantially weakened iran and we hope at some point iran will call us and we will make a new deal or maye we won't but iran is not the same country that it was five months ago. that i can tell you, they are no longer looking so much to the mediterranean and the entire middle east. they have some big they can solve probably much easier if they deal with us. and question will see what happens. but we did discuss iran. we discussed israel and the security of israel and president putin is very much involved now with us in the disussion with, and netanyahu with working something out with surrounding syria and syria and specifically with regards to the security and

long-term security of israel. a major topic of discus remove its nuclear weapons. russia has assured us of its support, president putin says he agrees with me 100 percent and they will do whatever they have to do to try to make it happen. discussions are ongoing and they are going very, very well, we have no rush for speed, the sanctions are remaining, the hostages are back, there have been no tests, there have been no rockets going up for a period of nine months, and i think the relationships are very good. so we will see how that goes. we have no time limit, we have no speed limit, we have -- we are just going through the process, but the relationships are very good. president putin is going to as u hou like to see that happen. perhaps the most important issue we have discussed at our meeting, prior to the press

nuclear weapons throughout the world, the united states and russia have 90 percent, as i said, and we can have a big impact but nuclear weapons as i think, are i think the greatest threat to our world today, and they are a great nuclear power, we are a great nuclear power, we have to do something about nuclear, and so that was a matter that we discussed, actually in great detail and president putin agrees with me. the matters we discuss ready profound in their importance and have the potential to save millions of lives. i understand that many disagree, there is difference between country but i want you to understand that the dialogue and when you think about it, dialogue with russia or dialogue with other countries but dialogue with russia in this case, when we had such poor relationships for so many years, dialogue is a very important thing and it is a very good thing. so if we get along with them,

great, if we don't get along with them, then we won't get along with them. but i think we have a very good chance of having some very positive things. i thought that the meeting that i had with president putin was really strong. i think that they were willing to do things that frankly i wasn't sure whether or not they would be willing to do, and we will be having future meetings and we will see whether or not that comes to fruition, but we had a very, very good meeting so i just wanted to clear up, i have the strongest respect for our intelligence agencies headed by my people. we have great people, whether it is gina or dan coates or any of them, we have tremendous people, tremendous talent within the agencies. i think they are being guided properly, and we all want the same thing. we want success for our country. so with that, we are going to start a meeting now on tax

reductions, we will be putting in a bill, kevin brady is with us and i might ask kevin just to say a couple of words about that, and then we will get back on to a private meeting, but kevin could you maybe give a brief discussion about what we will be talking about? >> yes, sir, mr. president. thank you for having members of the ways and means committee here today. peace through strength is foreign policy that works and it works best when america has a strong economy and a strong military. under your leadership house and senate republicans are delivering on both of them. today is about how we can strengthen america's economy even more, and we think the best place to start is with america's middle class families and our small businesses. so today we are here to talk to you about making permanent this tax relief, one, so they can continue to growo, so we can add million and a half new jobs and 3, we can fre washington

trying to steal back those hard earned dollars that you and thef having us here tl, what do you think that might be, kevin? >> we anticipate the house voting on this in september, and the senate, setting a timetable as well. >> well, that is great. >> thank you very much, everybody. >> okay. there you go, the president at the white house just moments ago saying i realize there is a need for some clarification following his comments yesterday after the meeting in helsinki with vladimir putin. the president yesterday said i don't see any reason why it would be russia involved in the 2016 election meddling, today he said what he meant to say was i don't see any reason why it wouldn't be russia involved. the president also said he will move aggressively to repel any efforts to interfere with 2018 election and there was this

remarkable moment just at the beginning of that news conference when just after the president sligence mmunity, the lights went out. then they quickly came back on. and everyone seemed to joke about that part of it jus little bit. we have reporting in washington and overseas now on this news conference. we are going to start with weija jiang at the white house, you are reporting on what triggered this clarification today. >> yes, yes, jeff, sr. officials tell cbs they were scrambling to fix up the mess that president trump made during that press conference and it was most important for them that he declare that he believes the u.s. intelligence community over vladimir putin. now, just moments ago he did not say that explicitly but he said he had the full faith and support for america's intelligence agencies. he said that yesterday, but mere is what his, with here is what about is important and new.

he says intelligence community's conclusion that meddling took place. he accepts the evidence, he accepts the conclusion, of course he added that there was no collusion, but, jeff, this is really significant, because it is one of the first times, perhaps the first that the president has made the distinction between russian interference in the election and collusion. even yesterday, he seemed to continue to conflate the two saying there was no wimp hunt and denying these claims and that is why the intelligence community was so outraged and upset. so today there was certainly a walkback, he says he accepts the conclusion and also says as you mentioned there are these strong safeguards in place to protect the election system. what he did not say was that he had a strong message for vladimir putin, in fact, the reporter in the room specifically asked, will you publicly condemn putin and the president did not answer that. so that is what we will be

watching for, jeff, but this certainly is a remarkable turn of events for president trump. >> glor: indeed it is. weija jiang at the white house, an aggressive line of storms moves through the background which may actually be to be for the power outage we just saw. liz palmer is in moscow, now, liz, you have been there so many times, what is the reaction going to be there? >> well, yesterday it was unadulterated joy, in fact, sergei lavrov the russian foreign minister right after the meetings ended said to one of the russian magazines, these meetings were more than super, he said, they were -- which is a russian word that means basically fabulous. by this morning, though, a little bit of doubt had crept in, and some of the senior analysts were saying, you know what? the backlash against that performance and particularly president trump's appearing to

disagree with the intellige services is so furious in the united states that it may have made russia completely toxic, so toxic that any chance of a second summit or perhaps negotiations in the fall would be completely destroyed. tonight, i think those fears will be allayed a little bit and the russians will be feeling, you know what? if the president trump has contradicted himself or corrected what he said yesterday, even though he now is implying although he didn't say it out right that president putin and the russians did meddle in the election, it will have calmed the backlash down, and so they are hoping that it will lead to a second round of talks, that the narrative will now become that the two leaders addressed global problems and that engagement is better than

a, estrangement. wekowill have to see in the days to come, but certainly the russians have never really been bothered about being accused of meddling in the election, in fact, the, there is some reason to think they enjoyed it. but they will be probably reassured this evening. >> glor: so, liz, these two countries have such a complicated, cold controversial history a ass you well know, you have spent so much time reporting overseas and in russia in particular, talk about where you think that relationship is at as we spend so much time talking about president trump and president putin. >> >> presiden president putin is y interested in engagement with the united states, but he is a former spy. he has russia's interests at heart and nobody else's. he operates on the principle that his enemy's weakness plays

to his own strengths, so he really does like the idea of destabilizing western democracies and the united states. but on the other hand, he knows that engagement with the u.s. will benefit his country and certainly it will boost his popularity. you know, russia is particularly after this amazingly successful world cup, they want to be part of the world now. it is not just the economic weight and pain of sanctions. they are connected. they see themselves as europeans, as westerners. they want to be part of the big global dialogue. they are sick of being pariahs and so there is a lot driving the russians 'effort at engagement. they are going to try and talk to president trump again and soon. >> glor: liz, always fantastic to hear your perspective, liz palmer joining us from moscow after this fascinating news conference this afternoon in which the president said he felt compelled to clarify his
