they all say russia interfered with the 2016 election. so when president trump appeared to question that assessment while standing next to vladimir putin in helsinki earlier this week, it set off a firestorm that even with the correction is not over yet. president trump is defending his one-on-one with vladimir putin. last night he tweeted it was a great success, but hours earlier, the president was responding to a barrage of bipartisan disapproval over comments he made after the meeting about russian meddling in the 2016 election. >> i have president putin, he just said it's not russia. i'll say this. i don't see any reason why it should be. the sentence should have been, i don't see any reason why i wouldn't or why it wouldn't be russia. >> at the white house tuesday, the president said he had full faith in the intelligence community. >> i accept our intelligence

from the president's interpreter, who was one of the only people in the meeting with vladimir putin. nancy cordes, cbs news, capitol hill. on tonight's "cbs evening news," jeff glor's follow-up interview with president trump, his first since returning from helsinki. the woman accused of acting as an agent for the russian government is expected to appear in court today. maria butina. the justice department said she tried to influence american politics and infiltrate pro gun rights organizations. her attorney says she is not a russian agent. special counsel robert mueller is seeking immunity for five potential witnesses in paul manafort's upcoming trial. manafort, president trump's former campaign manager, is charged with bank and campaign fraud. his trial is expected to start next week. also last week the u.s. judge

refused the request to move the trial. potential jurors in alexandria they say, were politically biased against him. mgm resorts says they're not responsible for the mass shooting last year in las vegas and they're suing hundreds of victims to avoid liability. the mgm lawsuits are against victims who are sued, have dismissed their suit, or are threatening to sue. mgm cites a post-9/11 law. federal investigate errs are looking into a deadly midair collision ore the florida everglades. two small planes from a

leaked through ceilings in the subway and through the house on capitol hill. heavy rains swamped nationals park just before the all-star game. parts of new york city's subway system also flooded. a funnel cloud was seen off the tip of manhattan. dryer conditions are expected for today. immigrants are getting extra protection, and new lawsuits for ohio state university. five former ohio state wrestlers are suing the school claiming officials knew about a doctor's repeated alleged sexual abuse and failed to take appropriate action. the students say they were molested by university doctor richard strauss in the 1980s and '90s. strauss took his own life in 1985. the "washington post" reports the military spending

bill signed by president trump yesterday includes a provision that reduces the deportation risks for immigrant recruits. an amendment allows defense secretary mattis additional recruits one additional year before giving background checks. security measures introduced in 2016 delay eed security checks for so long that more than a thousand recruits lost immigration status and faced possible deportation. "newsweek" reports on a study that suggests that teenagers who use social media could be at a greater risk of developing adhd. researchers studied more than 2,500 high school students. they found that using digital media frequently could be tied to the development of attention deficit disability disorder over a two-year period. they say furtherer research is needed. basketball game in virginia called the cops after a hard foul. one player was knocked to the floor during a hard screen monday night at the l.a. fitness center. the player who was knocked down said he was going to call police, but everyone thought he was joking. he was not. the incident was classified as an assault, but neither party wanted to press charges. both men admitted they fouled each other. and "national geographic" reported astronomers discovered 12 new moons orbiting the planet jupiter. the astronomers from the carnegie institution for science were looking for a hypothetical planet on the fringes of our solar system when they found a new moon. the moons are smaller in size. this brings to 79 the number of known moons circling jupiter. still ahead, getting off the ground. the founder of jetblue announces a startup that could shake up the airlines business. startup that could shake up the airlines business. strong and bright because it strengthens your enamel, but then also it polishes away stains for whiter teeth.

goldman sachs introduces a new ceo. david solomon will replace lloyd blankfein after 12 years. solomon becomes ceo on october 1st and chairman in 2019. he's been at goldman since 1989. david neeleman announced jetblue plans to buy new jets. neeleman plans to offer direct service instead of funneling flyers through connecting hubs. the carrier is seeking to fly nonstop to major cities like los angeles, chicago, and new york, but it will use secondary airports that may currently have no commercial service. meanwhile twitter has suspended at least 58 million user accounts in the final three months of last year. it's part of twitter's crackdown on malicious or suspicious accounts following russian meddling in the 2016 election.

the country. here's springer into right center field at the wall. that is gone! >> that's the houston astros' george springer hitting a home run in the tenth inning of last night's all-star game at nationals park in washington, d.c. alex bregman hit one too. they were two of the record-settling all-star game homers hit by the two teams. the american league beat the national league, 8-6. bregman was named the game's mvp. and a huge fire and several explosions rocked a texas industrial plant. video shows large flames and a plume of black smoke shooting into the sky yesterday. it happened at a gas plant in people within a mile of the

plant were evacuated and roads were closed. it's unclear what caused the explosions. nobody was hurt. and a young man from alabama, his dedication to his job led him to getting a new car, a gift from the company's ceo. >> i'd like to give you this car right here today, like right now. like you can drive away with it. >> walter carr's vehicle broke down the night before he was supposed to start a new job with a moving company, but he was so determined to get there, he began a 20-mile walk around midnight so he'd arrive on time. police gave him a ride along the way, but when the moving company found out about the walk, they surprised carr with a 2014 ford escape. >> i just knew i wanted to get to my job to show people i was dedicated to the job. >> carr's family moved to alabama after losing their home to hurricane katrina.

ristopr li's leg was severely burned when he fell to the deck. >> i got covered in hot rocks. it stayed there for two or three seconds. third-degree burns on my legs. >> you were trying to dodge the lava rocks that were raining down on the boat? >> yeah, pretty much. >> reporter: it destroyed more than 700 homes. at night you can really see the orange glow from the eruption behind me through the trees. that's where all of this lava is coming from as it makes its way miles down to the ocean. the boat operators, lava ocean tour, had a special permit to take tourists within 165 feet of the coastline, but cbs news uncovered three lawsuits in the last five years which accused the company of failing to warn passengers of dangerous conditions known to lava tours and dispensing with any kind of risk assess meant when selecting an area to view the volcanic eruption. the medial area around the lava
