>> two children are bitten in a possible shark attack at a new york beach. ♪ and more than 140 survivors of sexual abuse by larry nassar unite at the espys and are honored for their courage. >> headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, whether or not president trump accepts u.s. intelligence's conclusions that russia meddled in the 2016 elections depends on when you ask him. the president's answers shift from one day to the next. he told cbs news he laid down the law with regard to russian interference with the u.s. elections and this morning mr. trump was shown intelligence indicating putin personally ordered cyber attacks to sway the election.

laura podesta is here in new york with the details. good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. yesterday the president again tried to at a cabinet meeting on wednesday, president trump adde stands on russian medding in u.s. elections. >> is russia still targeting the u.s., mr. president trump? >> white house press secretary sara sanders said he was saying no to more questions. and he went on to talk about russia. >> and there has been no president as tough as i have been on russia. >> and he had a mixed message when cbs news anchor jeff glor asked if he ray -- agreed with his national intelligence director's assessment that the threat by russia is ongoing. >> i will tell you, though, it had better not be. >> reporter: members of his own party say they're becoming more

alarmed he's not taking more action against russia. >> the president is wrong, and he should heed the warnings of the intelligence community. >> fbi director christopher wray said russia is still trying to influence elections. >> russia attempted to interfere with the last election, and he continues to engage, malign, influence operations to this day. "the new york times" reports that in january 2017 two weeks before trump's inall racing, the top heads of the intelligence agency showed president trump highly classified information indicating putin personally ordered cyber attacks to sway the election. now the president is weighing what he calls an incredible offer. putin will allow access to russians accused of hacking if in turn they allow russian officials to interview americans accused by the kremlin of unspecified crimes. one of those people is former

ugs ambassador to russia, michael mcfaul. but there's no deal yet. white house press secretary sarah sanders says we have committed to nothing. anne-marie? >> laura podesta here in new york. thanks a lot, laura. well, ahead, only on "cbs this morning," republican senator james lankford of oklahoma, a member of the senate intelligence committee, we'll ask him what's being done to protect the u.s. election system. and also jeff glor with more on the interview of president trump. maria butina is being held in jail without bail after pleading not guilty to charges of conspiracy and acting as an unregistered foreign agent. during yesterday's hearing prosecutors outlined what they say are her efforts to gather information and situation foreign policy. paula reid has our report.

>> reporter: federal prosecutors accuse maria butina a russian agent who allegedly offered sex in exchange for a job where she could influence u.s. policy. butina has been charged with failing to register as a foreign agent and conspiring to act as a foreign agent for that power. the 29-year-old entered on a student visa in 2016, but had visited the u.s. several times over the past few years. she took steps to develop american politicians. photos document her with republican congressman scott walker and nra chief wayne lapierre. she was also actively involved in the national prayer breakfast and tried unsuccessfully to arrange a meeting between president trump and vladimir putin. as she tried to make more contact with leaders, she landed on the fbi's radar.

investigators allege she had an ongoing relationship with a 56-year-old republican operative strictly for business purposes and was likely in contact with russia's fsb intelligence agency throughout her stay in the u.s. a russian foreign ministry spokeswoman suggested that butina's arrest is part of an effort to undermine u.s. relations. ron hosko said she was looking to be a member. >> show was looking to prapgs come to our convention and take photos with important people. this served her purposes very much as well. >> butina was arrested on sunday after fbi said it saw signs she could be prepare ing ing to fle country. a judge ordered her to continue to be held without bail. she's pled not guilty to all charges. >> this morning the press association in the united kingdom reports that investigators believe they might identify the suspect behind the

nerve agent attack on a russian double agent and his daughter. skripal and his daughter were poisoned in march in england. they were critically ill and then recovered. they suspect russians after analyzing closed circuit tv. russia denies it was involved. at least 22 soldiers were injured when it was blown over by an army helicopter during a training exercise in california. it happened 25 miles south of san francisco. the helicopter was landing when wind from the rotor hit the tent. most injuries were minor. four soldiers were taken to the hospital to be treated. officials are investigating two possible shark attacks in the surf. it waufs new york's fire island. two children who were bitten are recovering. nikki battiste reports. >> reporter: sf's at fire

island's atlantique beach, but there's no swimming allowed. >> one of our young campers was on a boogie board. a wave knocked him off and he actually got hit. >> i brought him out of the water. he had blood on his leg and we started looking at his bites and someone actually found a tooth in one of the bites on his leg. >> reporter: the boy wasn't alone. 12-year-old lola pollina was in water up to her waist when she felt something. >> i ran up to my mom and my leg was all like bloody. >> reporter: lola said the fish was like 3 or 4 feet long. >> i was so close. i was like, oh, my gosh, how did this happen. >> reporter: experts say it's shark-breeding season but said most bites happen in the surf stone, not close to the shore. >> most shark bites are hit-and-runs. they bite and take off. >> reporter: both children are okay.

beachgoers are instructed to be careful in the water and follow lifeguards' instructions. nikki battiste, cbs news, new york. at least one person was killed by a fast moving fire in oregon. it was fueled by gusty winds. one person was found yesterday near a burnt out tractor. officials say he was probably trying to use the tractor to stop the flames. at least 45,000 acres have burned. dozens of households have been forced to evacuate, and oregon's governor has declared a state of emergency. in california, more high winds are forecast for this afternoon, which is bad news for firefighters battling the deadly fire at yosemite park. the fire is growing and burning out of control. it started on friday and has taken over 27 square miles. a key road into the park has been shut down and some communities have been forced to evacuate. heavy smoke has impeded visibility.

reports a measure to split california into three states was removed from the november ballot by the state supreme court. the court said significantquesoo the proposition's lidity. venture capitalist tim draper spent more than $1 million on the initiative. he says california has become ungovernable because of its size, wealth disparities, and geographical diversity. the "chicago tribune" says a woman is able to stand trial. the 66-year-old marilyn hartman is accused of repeatedly trying to sneak onto commercial jets without a ticket. the judge ordered her to be released from an illinois mental hospital and transferred to a private facility. she will wear an ankle monitor. the same judge ruled four months ago hartman was unfit to stand trial. "the new it will remove hosts that could lead to violence. the new policy expands the social media giant's move on

what type of false information it will remove. rumors that spread on facebook led to attacks on ethnic minorities. and facebook's mark zuckerberg faced scrutiny when he said he doesn't believe content such as holocaust denials should be banned unless it's shown to relate to violence. the "washington post" looks at a study that says alcohol-related liver deaths have increased sharply in the u.s. the study in the british medical journey says cerro sis-related deaths increased by 65% from 1999 to 2016. deaths from liver cancer doubled. the study says the rise in death rates was driven predominantly by alcohol-induced diseases. people between the ages of 25 and 34 have the highest increases in cirrhosis deaths. and nature.com has released a study that says u.s. national parks have as much pollution as

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. on the "cbs moneywatch," bruce springsteen will soon be streaming and the white house makes a push for job training. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, diane. >> good morning, anne-marie. well, today president trump is scheduled to sign an executive order to beef up training. he wants the u.s. companies and trade associations to sign a pledge to give students and workers more job training so they can compete in a workplace where there is increasing ought nation. many companies can't find automated companies. the executive order also creates a national council for workers and a policy advisory board.

federal reserve chairman jerome powell wrapped up two days worth of testimony. he reiterated his upbeat look at the economy even though the trade war could cause inflation to speed up. here on wall street there are big gains for transportation and trade companies but it was a mixed finish. the dow rose 79 points. the s&p 500 added 6 points, and the nasdaq finished slightly lower. the national highway traffic safety administration isn't acting fast enough on consumer complaints. that's according to the report from the transportation department. the report also found the safety agency's process for monitoring car and truck recalls is inadequate. for instance, the agency is not verifying recall completion rates. the actions could affect those affected by defective takata airbags. and bruce springsteen is headed to netflix. ♪ a screen door slams mary's dress sways ♪

our top story this morning, president trump told cbs news he told russian president vladimir putin to stay out of u.s. elections. there was confusion after a cabinet meeting where president trump appeared to say no when asked if russia is still targeting the u.s. white house press secretary sarah sanders said he was saying no to answers more questions. the woman suspect of being a russian agent maria butina has pleaded not guilty. during yesterday's hearing

prosecutors outlined what they say are herrests to gather information and sway american foreign policy. they say she offered sex in exchange for a job where she could influence policy. and two children were bitten in the waters off new york's fire island in probable shark attacks. the 13-year-old boy and 12-year-old girl were bitten in the leg. both suffered puncture wounds but are expected to recover. what appears to be a shark's tooth was taken from the boy's leg. the girl said she saw a fin and a fish about 14 feet long. there are harrowing moments before a sightseeing plane crashed last week. passengers saw the looming danger before the pilot. kris van cleave has more. >> reporter: it was a daring ue of11 pe from ane at crashed into thee ofaskan mountain.mefore last tuesday's crash, one pilot texted the other asking to land.

the pilot sexting next to him was uncomfortable with the worsening weather conditions shortly before he saw what the pilot missed, mountains ahead of the airplane. according to the ntsb's preliminary report, as the visibility went to zero, 72-year-old pilot mike hudgens's tried to turn around but he became disoriented when he thought he saw a body of water. the plane could have landed with floats, instead it crash. we talked to the passengers. >> i was outside the aircraft and where my side hit i couldn't see anything. it was cloud. the visibility was horrible. >> reporter: the report says hudgens appeared to avoid the mountain but reacted too late. the investigation is ongoing. kris van cleave, cbs news, washington. coming up on "cbs thaveir ko
