actually two tornadoes that ripped three town. >> looked up and there was what appears to be a second tornado headed down toward ore neighborhood, and i think that's what probably hit these homes. >> a tornado struck a plant in pella. the storm deposited sheets of metal in the middle of a cornfield across the street. several people inside the plant suffered minor injuries. >> all of our team members were in shelters when that hit, and, yeah, from there we went into action. >> reporter: cars were piled up on top of each other, and people reported the smell of gas. and sigh reince sounded when a confirmed tornado touched down in marshalltown, leaving a path of destruction in its wake. it topped the spire on a main courthouse in the district. other structures in town were reduced to rubble, and the windows of vehicles were blown out. >> this is very devastating to this community. it's a multicultural community, and all the people here work very, very hard.

letting the fed do what it feels is best. now, president trump does not criticize the federal reserve who acts traditionally independent of politics. auto industry representatives told congress they oppose points, the s&p 500 lost 11 points, the nasdaq dropped 29 points. the canadian government said it will retaliate if the u.s. imposes tariffs on canadian car parts. the trump administration is considering imposing tariffs of up to 25% on imported car and auto parts. on capitol hill, canada's deputy ambassador to the united states told a congressional hearing the imposition of tariffs on canadian imports would be devastating and canada would respond in a proportional manner.

an investigation is under way in houston after a 3-year-old boy died after he was left in a hot day car van for more than three hours. deputies found him inside the hot van when the dad arrived to pick him up. deputies say the temperature inside the van was 113 degrees. it was used earlier if day to take 28 kids on the field trip. the van's driver and chaperone were detained for questioning. and in florida a baby left alone in a car was rescued by a quick-thinking person. jessica kaiser was passing by a car in a strip mall on tuesday when she noticed something unusual. the volusia county sheriff explains what happened. >> she thought it was a doll in the back seat. that doll turn out to be an

industry are urging president trump to hit the brasnis tariff foreign vehicles and parts. the tariffs are meant to protect american jobs, but as jericka duncan reports, some warn it will do the opposite. >> reporter: at this honda dealership in new york, general manager brian benstock warns customers and employees price hikes could be coming. >> now's the time to buy a new car. prices could potentially go up. it will put some fear in the market, and fear is not a good thing. >> reporter: the proposed 25% tariff on imported cars on auto parts and imports from elsewhere could give buyers sticker shock. consumers could be shelling out $7,000 more per vehicle. the honda civic could cost an extra $1,100, the ford escape, up nearly $1,600, and the audi q5 could run $6,000 more.

and it's not just shopping for cars. the entire industry could take a hit. according to an industry study, the impact of tariffs could have the opposite effect of helping the u.s. car and parts imports could lead up to 2 million new vehicle sales. a 25% tariff on automotive and parts imports could lead up to 2 million new vehicle sales and cost nearly 20,000 auto dealership shops. >> whether it's insurance, advertising, banking. every industry is impacted when we sell less cars. >> cbs business analyst jill schlesinger. >> when we put tariffs on top of an already accelerating inflation rate, it starts to put pressure on the consumer. that's what economists are worried about. last year 40% of the. salewere imports. the u.s. commerce department will continue to investigate this issue of possibly imposing those new tariffs on foreign cars and auto parts. jericka duncan, cbs news, new
