'soing to be special. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with a deadly boat accident in southwest missouri. at least 11 people including children were killed when a sightseeing tour boat sank in a popular town in branson. it's friday, july 20. i'm kenny choi. five were killed and seven injured. more than 30 people were on board when a powerful storm hit the lake. the bay bridge. the search for other victims resumes this morning. laura podesta is here with more. laura, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. storms were in the forecast all day yesterday for the branson area. a clear shot this morning. it's friday, july 20th. i'm kenny choi. >> i'm melissa caen. time now 4:29. here's neda iranpour with so one of the questions weather. >> good morning. we do have a little fog out

>> video shows the chaotic scene on the shore and first responders helping the injured. a hospital spokesperson said adults and children were treated in the emergency department. >> today was a very traumatic experience for everyone involved, and i am confident that our staff are really working with these patients to make them feel as comfortable as they possibly can right now. >> weather may be a factor as to why the boat sank. >> i've never seen it like this bad. boats can't get in. >> video from earlier in the day shows rough waters on table rock lake. and the national weather service said winds reached speeds of more than 60 miles per hour in the branson area when the accident took place. we have received a statement from the duck boat company saying we are deeply saddened by the tragic accident that occurred this morning at ride the ducks branson. the safety of our guests and . we will provide updates as we have additional confirmed information to share.

anne-marie? >> laura podesta in new york. thank you so much, laura. well, north of missouri in neighboring iowa, of storms caused destruction. it caught forecasters by surprise. roofs were torn off, cars were thrown around, and a hospital had to be evacuated. at least 17 people were injured. kenneth craig has more. >> honey, get inside. >> reporter: it looked like a scene from "the wizard of oz" as a twister snapped up palms in b don durant, iowa.

actually two tornadoes that ripped three town. >> looked up and there was what appears to be a second tornado headed down toward ore neighborhood, and i think that's what probably hit these homes. >> a tornado struck a plant in pella. the storm deposited sheets of metal in the middle of a cornfield across the street. several people inside the plant suffered minor injuries. >> all of our team members were in shelters when that hit, and, yeah, from there we went into action. >> reporter: cars were piled up on top of each other, and people reported the smell of gas. and sigh reince sounded when a confirmed tornado touched down in marshalltown, leaving a path of destruction in its wake. it topped the spire on a main courthouse in the district. other structures in town were reduced to rubble, and the windows of vehicles were blown out. >> this is very devastating to this community. it's a multicultural community, and all the people here work very, very hard.

>> reporter: the national weather service continued to issue warnings as the storm system moved eastward through the state. kenneth craig, cbs news. now to washington where president trump wants to have another meeting with russian president vladimir putin. mr. trump invited putin to the white hothis fall even as criticues toimmer. so far, no reaction from the kremlin. the invitation caught most of washington including the president's top intelligence official, by surprise. as angelica alvarez reports, dan coats says he's still trying to learn what happened when the two leaders met the first time. >> you're right. i don't know what happened in the first meeting. i think as time goes by, we'll learn more. >> reporter: president trump has declared the summit with president putin a great success. so much so, mr. putin has been invited to the white house this

fall, another thing the president didn't tell dan coats. >> did i hear that right? >> yeah, yeah. >> okay. >> yeah. >> that's going to be special. >> reporter: president trump has tried to clarify statements he made at the summit that seemed to let putin off the hook for russian meddling in the 2016 election. >> let him know we can't have this, we're not going to have it, and that's the way it's going to be. >> reporter: a new cbs news poll found only about a third of americans approved of the way president trump handled the summit, but he does have the support of about 68% of the republicans. dan coats says the russians are still interfering with the u.s. >> it's undeniable that the russians are taking a lead on this. well, the justice department unveiled a new policy to try dom bat and alert the public about cyber threat like russia's

tampering. warning the public about misinformation can help monitor its effect. president trump says he's ready to run in 2020, and during a white house interview, he tells cbs news anchor jeff glor who he would like to run against. >> let me ask you about 2020. who do you think your democratic opponent will be? joe biden says he'll make a decision by january. tough opponent? >> i'll dream about joe biden. look, joe biden ran three times. he never got more than 1%. and president obama took him out of the garbage heap, and everybody was shocked that he did. i'd love it to be biden. i think i'd like it to be any one of those people we're talking about. there's probably a group of seven or eight right now. i'd like to run against any one of them, but biden never by himself could never do anything. president obama took him, made him vice president, and he was fine. but you go back and look at how he succeeded in running when he

ran two or three times, i don't think he ever broke one. he was at the one or less level, 1% or less level. >> you say people want you to run. do you want to run? >> yeah, i do. i love it. i'm having fun. ahead on "cbs this morning," a panel of florida voters tells us what they think about president trump, russia, and the upcoming midterm elections. the nfl's 2-year-old "national anthem" policy is on hold. yesterday the league and players union said they're trying to come up with a solution. in may the nfl passed a rule prohibiting players from sitting or taking a knee on the field during the "national anthem," but they were allowed to stay in the locker room if they wished. the players union filed a grievance challenging the rule this month. coming up on the "morning news" now, falling short in flint, michigan. the epa faces new criticism in

needed to act quicker and more forcefully to the flint water crisis. they say the agency's failure to take timely action compounded the problems. flint's tap water became contaminated with lead in 2014 when it switched its drinking supply to save money. the watch cog --new starbucks w open. they announce third first u.s. signing store with a sign language tweet. it will open in october. the company plans to hire up to 25 deaf, hard of hearing, and people who can hear with the requirement that they need to know american sign language. and britain's "guardian" says three deposed mummies were found inside a huge granite egyptian sarcophagus. they opened a tomb where they found liquid and water which

on the "cbs moneywatch," the president criticizes the fed, and a "star wars" favorite returns. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, diane. >> good morning, anne-marie. we'll start with this. president trump says he hopes the federal reserve stops raising interest rates. last month they increased the rate and projected two more rate hikes. they could water down the benefits from the tax cuts mr. trump enacted last year. in a broadcast interview yesterday, mr. trump said he's not thrilled. >> i don't like all this work we're putting into the economy and then i see the rates going up. >> the president said even though he's not happy, he's

letting the fed do what it feels is best. now, president trump does not criticize the federal reserve who acts traditionally independent of politics. auto industry representatives told congress they oppose points, the s&p 500 lost 11 points, the nasdaq dropped 29 points. the canadian government said it will retaliate if the u.s. imposes tariffs on canadian car parts. the trump administration is considering imposing tariffs of up to 25% on imported car and auto parts. on capitol hill, canada's deputy ambassador to the united states told a congressional hearing the imposition of tariffs on canadian imports would be devastating and canada would respond in a proportional manner.

an investigation is under way in houston after a 3-year-old boy died after he was left in a hot day car van for more than three hours. deputies found him inside the hot van when the dad arrived to pick him up. deputies say the temperature inside the van was 113 degrees. it was used earlier if day to take 28 kids on the field trip. the van's driver and chaperone were detained for questioning. and in florida a baby left alone in a car was rescued by a quick-thinking person. jessica kaiser was passing by a car in a strip mall on tuesday when she noticed something unusual. the volusia county sheriff explains what happened. >> she thought it was a doll in the back seat. that doll turn out to be an

8-month-old child. the temperature was 93 degrees. the windows were up, and that i no air conditioning. >> kaiser called 911 and the police came. the mother came ou of the store 24 minutes later. the child turned out to be okay. she said she thought she dropped off all of her children after running all of her errands. she was charged with neglect. a waitress turns the tables on a man who apparently groped her. video shows her walking by and him touching her last month. she grabs him by the back of the shirt and throwing him to the ground. she then yells at him before asking a co-worker to call police. >> i was really satisfied when he was arrested because it not but justice for the other women who have had that happen. >> 31-year-old ryan cherwinski spent two nights in jail and was

industry are urging president trump to hit the brasnis tariff foreign vehicles and parts. the tariffs are meant to protect american jobs, but as jericka duncan reports, some warn it will do the opposite. >> reporter: at this honda dealership in new york, general manager brian benstock warns customers and employees price hikes could be coming. >> now's the time to buy a new car. prices could potentially go up. it will put some fear in the market, and fear is not a good thing. >> reporter: the proposed 25% tariff on imported cars on auto parts and imports from elsewhere could give buyers sticker shock. consumers could be shelling out $7,000 more per vehicle. the honda civic could cost an extra $1,100, the ford escape, up nearly $1,600, and the audi q5 could run $6,000 more.

and it's not just shopping for cars. the entire industry could take a hit. according to an industry study, the impact of tariffs could have the opposite effect of helping the u.s. car and parts imports could lead up to 2 million new vehicle sales. a 25% tariff on automotive and parts imports could lead up to 2 million new vehicle sales and cost nearly 20,000 auto dealership shops. >> whether it's insurance, advertising, banking. every industry is impacted when we sell less cars. >> cbs business analyst jill schlesinger. >> when we put tariffs on top of an already accelerating inflation rate, it starts to put pressure on the consumer. that's what economists are worried about. last year 40% of the. salewere imports. the u.s. commerce department will continue to investigate this issue of possibly imposing those new tariffs on foreign cars and auto parts. jericka duncan, cbs news, new
