57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. president trump is considering revoking the security clearances of former national security officials that have been critical of him. it would be an unprecedented action. opponents see it as a vendetta and warn of an enemy's list. laura is here in new york. laura, good morning. >> good morning. democrats say this threat is just to divert attention away from the president's recent antics including tweeting an all caps threat to the president of iran. >> president trump is threatening to revoke the security clearances of six obama era officials critical of him. john brennan, james comey, james clapper, michael hayden. susan rice and andrew mccabe. >> they politicize and monetize

their public service and security clearances. >> it's common to maintain clearances after leaving office. they're renewed every five years and allow former officials to advise their successors. clapper that served under president obama called it retribution for speaking out against president trump. >> it's a very sad and disturbing thing for the first amendment. >> republican senator rand paul brought the idea to the president. >> i think there's a great danger to having people on television who are speaking off the cuff, who are getting classified information. >> a spokesperson for brennan, a former cia director says president trump is trying to divert attention from the russia investigation. >> it's all a deflection. >> democrats also believe the president wants to change the topic. >> i think this president is getting us closer and closer to unnecessary war with iran. >> president trump made an all caps twitter threat to the

leader of iran sunday night. >> and we should mention that comey and mccabe, lost their clearances when they were fired from the fbi and hayden tweeted he doesn't go back for classified briefings and losing his clearance won't have any effect on what he says or writes. thank you, laura. the trial of president trump's former campaign chairman paul manafort is postponed until next week. a federal judge gave his lawyers more time to review documents supplied by mueller's office. manafort is accused of funneling funds obtained in ukraine through offshore accounts. they also approved the request to offer immunity to five potential witnesses. prosecutors are reviewing 12 audio recordings seized by the fbi from michael cohen.

>> the recordings were among the data they took last spring during a raid of cohen's home, office, and hotel room. on one recording cohen and the president discuss a payment to a playboy model that said she had an affair with mr. trump. >> overseas now greece is seeking help to battle a pair of deadly wildfires near athens. 49 people have been killed and more than 150 injured. it's one of the deadliest fire seasons in greece in more than a decade. they are spreading so quickly many were taken by surprise. hundreds of tourists had to escape the beaches to be evacuated by boat. children's summer camps and holiday homes were abandoned. now to severe weather at home causing problems from coast-to-coast. we begin in the east where flash flood watches are in effect from north carolina to new york. the region is getting prolonged

wet weather that won't go away. it's expected to last for the next few days. >> a powerful coastal storm has been pounding the northeast and mid-atlantic bringing downpours like this one and now that storm is stalled lashing pennsylvania and new york with rain like you're seeing here. nearby roads turn into rivers and first responders had to dive into action making several rescues. in some areas the water rose so quickly it nearly went above the roof of cars forcing them on to their hoods in search of higher ground. according to the national weather service this pattern of stalled heavy rain is going to continue wednesday maybe even through saturday. cbs news, lebanon, pennsylvania. well, out west it's a triple weather whammy of floods, fire and extreme heat.

severe storms caused flash flooding and mud slides. residents were warned to seek higher ground. more storms are possible later this week. in california a massive wildfire threatens hundreds of homes and is burning close to yosemite national park while others are coping with a dangerous heat wave. an excessive heat warning has been issued for the southwest u.s. temperatures in southern california and arizona hit triple digits. southern arizona will experience temperatures up to 119 degrees through tomorrow. so investigators identified the gunman who opened fire on a busy toronto street but they still don't have a motive. the 29-year-old faisal hussain

died following an exchange of gunfire with police. he killed two people and wounded 13 others. he had a long history of psychosis and depression despite medication and professional intervention. oakland california police arrested a man suspected in the fatal stabbing of a teenager at a train station. john lee cowell was picked up about a dozen miles from the stabbing incident. he stabbed to death nia wilson and wounded her sister. police say it appears to have been a random attack. >> federal investigators want to know if the operators of the tour boat that sank in a missouri lake violated coast guard rules by heading out as thunderstorms threatened. the duck boat was recovered from the lake yesterday. 17 people drowned when the boat sank. 14-year-old lauren smith was pulled from the water. she said the captain never told passengers to put on their life jackets. >> it started flooding in the boat. right before it sank everybody was in shock. the guy didn't tell us to put on life jackets. and the selfish side of me is like why did he get to live and now my brother's dead. >> nine members of one family died. the sightseeing boat company is offering to pay for all medical and funeral expenses.

a construction worker is in critical condition. no one else is hurt. it was being torn down for construction of a new ocean front condominium. >> there's new images of a suspect and signs of progress in north korea. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the washington post reports satellite images suggested north korea has started dismantling a key missile test site. the location has been the main site for north korean satellite launches since 2012. it's also believed to play a role in the development of engines for north korea's missile program. after last month's summit president trump said kim jong un pledged to dismantle a site. police released new surveillance photos and videos of a suspect in the murder of a prominent cardiologist. he once treated president george h.w. bush and was shot to death last friday while riding his

bike to work. the video shows him riding a yellow bike just before he was shot. a suspect also on a bike trails shortly behind. wearing a blue short sleeve polo shirt and khaki cap and shirt. he was also carrying a large fully loaded olive green backpack. illinois governor bruce rauner blasted willie wilson for handing out cash at a sunday church service. he gave out $200,000 in cash and checks to church goer at the service. he said he didn't know wilson would be handing out money. wilson's campaign says the millionaire business man gave away money to help people pay their property taxes and other expenses. the state board of elections says he did not break campaign finance laws because the money came from his nonprofit foundation. six time olympic gold medallist swimmer ryan lochte is
