good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. firefighters in california say they are starting to gain ground on the deadly wildfire burning around redding. at least six people have been killed by the so-called carr fire. there are at least 18 people reported missing. the massive fire is now 17% contained. it's burned more than 95,000 acres since it started a week ago. at least 874 buildings have been destroyed, many of them homes. nearly 40,000 have been forced to evacuate, and more evacuations were ordered last night. laura podesta is here in new york with the latest. laura, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. the fire was started one week ago by a vehicle problem about ten miles west of redding. as you mentioned, the wildfire has claimed homes and lives, but there is some hope this morning.

a week after the carr fire began raging out of control in northern california, the flames have finally slowed. >> we are starting to gain some ground. rather than being in the defensive mode on this fire all the time. >> for the first time since it broke out, officials expressed cautious optimism about the still growing fire. >> what we want do right now is to make sure that the areas that have been devastated by this fire are safe. the last thing we want is to let people back in and have someone injured or killed because it's not safe yet. >> it's forced nearly 40,000 people to flee their homes. by sunday night, the fires burning across the state had claimed several lives. the victims include a woman and her two great grandchildren ages 4 and 5. a neighbor describes how he tried to save them, but the heat was too intense. >> when i got down the road and

i got a phone call from her. so i turned around, my hair singed, and i got no hair on my arms. yeah, she's dead. >> two firefighters were killed including a 33-year-old man who died when a tree fell on him near yosemite park. and weather continues to be a factor for those firefighters trying to make progress on the carr fire. the temperature in the redding area is expected to climb to 100 degrees today and the rest of the week. anne-marie? >> laura podesta here in new york. thank you so much, laura. ahead on "cbs this morning," jonathan cox, battalion chief for california's northern region will give us the latest on the battle against the carr fire. president trump is threatening to shut down the government over border security. the president tweeted yesterday he's willing to shut down the government if democrats don't give him the votes for border security, which includes the wall. the president promised a border

wall with mexico to deter illegal immigration. gop leaders are playing down the chance of a shutdown as the november election approaches. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell said it wasn't going to happen. meanwhile the president and his former lawyer michael cohen are engaged in a growing dispute. the justice department has been investigating cohen for months. the fbi raided his home, office, and hotel room in april and now cohen is reportedly weighing whether to cooperate with the mueller investigation. errol barnett reports. >> reporter: despite having positive economic news to highlight, president trump tweeted about his embattled former attorney michael cohen sunday, reminding followers a year ago cohen called donald trump jr. open, honest, and transparent for releasing emails related to the meeting at the trump tower. >> i don't see how you can believe cohen. he's turned out to be an almost

instinctual layer. >> reporter: but the president's current lawyer rudy giuliani is waging a war of words with cohen over his recordings of a conversation with trump in which payments to a playboy model alleged an affair were discussed. rudy giuliani said federal investigators have 183 of cohen's recordings, of which nearly a dozen relate to discussions with mr. trump. the only recording featuring the president, mr. giuliani says, has already been released. giuliani was asked why he described cohen as honest just weeks ago. >> i didn't know that he taped conversations surreptitiously, i didn't know he would violate the attorney/client relationship. >> reporter: the pushback comes as president trump continues to campaign almost daily to boost prospects in the midterm elections now 100 days away. a new cbs news battleground tracker poll finds 43% of americans approve of the president's trade issues and 50% approve of his stewardship of the economy.

but the russia probe is divisive. almost half of republicans say the investigation makes them want to defend the president, while 73% of democrats say it makes them suspect he did something wrong. errol barnett, cbs news, berkeley heights, new jersey. jury selection is scheduled to begin tomorrow in virginia in the trial of president trump's former campaign manager paul manafort. manafort was indicted in the robber mueller investigation. prosecutors will try to prove that he laundered more than $30 million in money earned by political consulting in ukraine. in a separate case, manafort faces charges of acting as an unregistered foreign agent and lying to the government. today the cbs board of directors is expected to meet amid allegations of cbs chairman and ceo les moonves. there are also accusations that harassment was accepted at cbs news. cbs says it's investigating those claims, and tony dokoupil has our report. >> reporter: monday's regularly

scheduled gathering of the cbs board of directors comes after a bombshell new yorker report on friday alleging that six women who had professional dealings with les moonves said he sexually harassed them between the 1980s and early 2000s and 19 current and former employees claim former cbs news chairman and current "60 minutes" executive producer jeff fager allowed harassment in the news division. both men have denied allegations of wrongdoing, and the cbs director said friday they're investigating the claims. in one of the claims, actor/producer illeana douglas said she went there for a script meeting in 1997 where she said the executive held her down on the couch, quote, vie lnltly kissing her. she said the physicality of it was horrendous. moonves acknowledges the kiss but denies sexual assault. douglas believes the alleged

incident derailed the future career i would have had at cbs. late saturday she added real change will occur when i can walk through the front doors of cbs and resume the creative relationship that was so tragically cut short. "the new yorker" story goes on to allege that six former employees said former news chairman and current "60 minutes" executive producer jeff faker would get drunk at company parties and touch employees in ways that made them uncomfortable. he denied the accusations saying they never happened. ronan farrow said he spent eight months vetting the women's accounts. >> these are women that began coming to me immediately after the harvey weinstein story. we have vetted and revetted these sources, and my honest impression is that these stories are not only true but also not fueled by opposition research. >> cbs news has hired a law firm to investigation the latest

accusations of sexual misconduct and will include the allegations in the article. moonves says he denies having used his position to affect anyone's career. fager said, quote, it's wrong that our few kur can be defined by a few people with an axe to grind." tony decokoupildokoupil, cbs ne york. police video was released of the fatal shooting of a black man thurman blevins. blevins was shot and killed june 23rd as two officers chased him on foot. a gun was recovered at the scene. both officers fired their guns. the mayor called blevins' death tragicic but didn't comment on what the video shows. >> in this quest to bring about greater transparency, there will be pain. transparency is not the absence of pain in cases like this. it is an acknowledgement of it,

and i know that right now in our city, there's a lot of pain. >> relatives say blevins was not a threat to the police. the two officers are on administrative leave. and there's now a $2,000 reward in the case of that missing iowa college student. mollie tibbetts disappeared 12 days ago. according to new evidence, family members say she was up late doing homework on her computer the night she disappeared. she was dog-sitting for her boyfriend who was out of town and is not a suspect. at some point she went out for a run and returned. that's according to her family. iowa investigators say they can't confirm or deny the claim. lawyers with a history of duck boat events have made an announcement. funerals were held in indianapolis on saturday for five members of a family that lost nine members when a duck boat sank on a missouri lake on

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. on the "cbs moneywatch," the big mac celebrates a birthday with a special deal, and the fed reserve convenes. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, diane. >> good morning, anne-marie. the fed will be on fed watch as they begin a two-day policy meeting tomorrow. the central bank is not expected to raise interest rates this time but will continue to point toward further gradual rate increases later this year, likely in september and december. the fed has already raised rates twice this year in response to strong economic growth, low unemployment, and the current inflation rate.

she was imprisoned after she kicked and slapped two israeli soldiers during protests. her mother filmed the incident live on facebook where it quickly went viral. some claim the video was staged. tamimi said she struck the soldiers out of frustrations after troops seriously injured her 15-year-old cousin by shooting him in the head with a rubber bullet. her prison sentence drew heavy criticism from groups like amnesty international who arguing minors shouldn't be imprisoned for such cases. her sentence reached through a plea deal, they say, was lenient considering the crime. two italian artists were arrested on the west bank after trying to paint a mural of tamimi. she finished her high school studies while in prison and she said she plans to attend college to study law. jonathan vigliotti, cbs news, london. coming up on "cbs this morning," the killing of trayvon martin captured national headlines and sparked a
