flames. good afternoon, everyone. i am michelle griego . >> nearly 240,000 acres have black and while these flames have damaged or destroyed more than 1000 structures and still 25,000 homes are in danger. >> we have team coverage this afternoon and it is two fires making up the mendocino complex fire closing in on the city of lakeport and right now there are large-scale evacuations. let's get right on over to anne. >> reporter: you can see how much smoke is in the air behind me at lakeport. i am at highway 29 and 175. the weather this afternoon is

going to be in trouble as far as the success of their work today. michelle packed up her three cats yesterday and became one of the 7500 people who were forced from their home by the mendocino complex fire. >> we had five police cars yesterday saying there was mandatory evacuations. these in some of our people behind who would not leave their property was hard. they are in their 80s. >> reporter: these community sees -- 88 square miles have been burned on the west side of clearlake. within 10,000 structures have been threatened. >> you cannot replace life but you can't replace stuff. >> reporter: jordan williams was a red cross volunteer and

now finds himself on the receiving end of the emergency. >> it is being weird to evacuate after helping but i know enough to listen. >> reporter: six homes have been burned and 7500 people to find the news of there's. >> it is not easy. it is heartbreaking. >> reporter: these evacuees have seen the worst case scenario around northern california. it is hot right now. it is going to be a very telling afternoon when it comes to seeing if the containment lines are able to hold. in lakeport, anne makovec , kpix 5. >> mendocino college is an evacuation center.

mountain vista middle school also and killed several elementary and high school. lower lake high school and twin pines and we have neda iranpour monitoring. >> let's take a look right now at the current conditions. it is already warming up where the mendocino complex fire is burning with humidity dry at 21% and wind gusts at 18 miles- per-hour. we are continuing to see those wind gusts with some of the ridge tops and when the afternoon hits, that is when temperatures will be in the mid- 90s. it is hot and smoky in the forecast today. overall on satellite and radar we get some smoke in northern california. a lot of this is getting pushed to the northeast of the bay area. near the fires, it is smoky and

unhealthy. it is in the 90s near the fires but around the bay the morning marine layer will return with cool conditions right around the water. back to you. the carr fire and shasta county is that need more homes with 40,000 people evacuating. it has burned nearly 150 square miles. that is the area shown here in red. chris martinez has the latest from redding . >> reporter: they are battling a deadly wildfire in northern, california with the carr fire still growing. the battalion chief jonathan cox told cbs this morning the threat to the city of redding has diminished . >> it is a highly populated area and it has slowed. >> reporter: fire has been raging for more than one week

operator was killed when it rolled down a ravine. the fire has scorched 56,000 acres and is still only 30% contained. evacuation orders have been lifted in napa county on the south shore of lake berryessa. it is now 75% contained. you can find more on our website at www.cbssf.com. there is a new clue in the search for a missing iowa college student. molly tibbetts is doing homework the night she vanished. that is according to her older brother. tibbetts was last seen july 18 and investigators have also looked her cell phone for data and her fitness tracker. president trump says if he does not get the funding for

dellums started his career as a member of the berkeley city council. he was a member of the house of representatives he cofounded the black caucus and became the first african-american to chair the armed services committee. his work led to united states sanctions against south africa working with nelson mandela. >> the people of the bay area who have given me and my delegation strength and hope. >> he was later honored with a special reward for his efforts. barbara lee took over his seat when he decided to step down. in a statement released this morning, she said i fell blessed to call him my friend and mentor. i will miss him tremendously and hold dear to my heart.

minnesota have released body camera video.... from one of the police officers involved in the fa man last month. officials in minnesota have released body cameras video for one of the police officers involved in the fatal shooting of a black man last month. they also said there is no plans to charge the officers. the video shows officer ryan kelly and justin schmidt chasing through an alley where both shoot 14 times. four of the bullets hit the man. >> the footage has been

released. this is just one part of an effort to bring greater transparency to this process. >> police say forensic testing and the video proves he had a gun in his hand at the time of the conversation and the officers were responding to a report somebody was firing a handgun in the air. the first lawsuit to challenge the printing of ghost guns will be announced today. into two days downloading the instructions could become legal. they will made of plastic. they will be available for purchase online. he trump administration recently settled a lawsuit to allow plans for those guns to be posted to the internet. chuck schumer said he will introduce a new bill to prevent the instruction. >> if people want to cause havoc can get hold of these.

>> dianne feinstein and others sent a letter to jeff sessions demanding the explanation of the settlement. animal lovers are calling at a controversial tactic. customers that they were taking out owns -- loans for pets but were duped into signing lease agreements. >> reporter: courtney peterman said she thought she was taking out a $3000 loan to buy the dogs at the pet store. she signed a contract, made a payment, and took them home. 18 months later she expected it to paid off but she was told she had 20 more payments to go. >> i was told it was not a loan but a lease.

>> reporter: she kept making payments during the worst about what would happen if she defaulted. the contract was with the leasing company wags, which was signed electronically at the store and admits she did not read it carefully when it was sent to her later. >> just like someone who goes to a car dealership, people get distracted by the monthly payment and might not negotiate the sticker price and when you add in the fees the dog is $5000 . even people whose pets have died are continuing to be expected to pay. >> if the pet that you are leasing dies, you are still responsible for the contract?

sfo is breezy conditions and this is what is keeping things pretty cool with temperatures spot on for this time of the year in the low 70s for this afternoon. look how cool it will stay by the beaches. morgan hill is 93 and 85. the warm air is across the east bay as well so not as hot as last week and we are not talking heat advisories in the area and it is completely different in sausalito and alameda. mid-90s still and we have the ridge of high pressure to the south of us. as it moves toward the east that is when we will notice a slight drop in those numbers

area is very expensive so is it better to rent or buy? renting homes here is actually cheaper than buying one. in san jose, it is 12.2% cheaper to rent a home and in san francisco 5.8% cheaper due to housing prices skyrocketing. social media giant twitter is taking a look at health. in march jack dorsey asked for ideas to help improve health conversations. hundreds of submissions came in , but want to start out looking to explore how diverse perspectives can decrease prejudice. this is after twitter deleted suspicious accounts. we will be right back.

zucchini is growing in so many different ways. it is great on the grill and grade anywhere. when you are buying zucchini, make sure it is nice and green and firm. check the stem and it should be nice and clear.
