college student home safe. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters in new york. i'm don dahler in for anne-marie green. this morning a dam near lynchburg, virginia, remains ihe evacuation of more than 100 homes. the severe weather in virginia, up to 6 inches of rain fell yesterday. it's part of a storm system that extends from georgia to vermont. all of that water caused college lake dam to fill beyond capacity. the high water started to recede overnight, but more rain is forecast for today. laura podesta is here in new york with more on this. good morning, laura. >> good morning, don. that's the concern. if that dam breaks, the city of virginia could be flooded with 17 feet of water in under ten minutes. for residents of lynchburg, virginia, it was a night of high anxiety and rising floodwaters. after days of severe storms, the

college lake dam is saud to be in fear of failing. >> the rescue boats are here and have been searching around the apartments as you can see behind me, and they have right now -- our latest count, they've gotten about ten people out. so -- and they're still getting some more folks out. >> authorities are closely monitoring the dam for any kind of structural failure. fears that it would collapse came at the end of a day when as much as 6 inches of rain fell in the area. the dam isn't the only danger. >> there could be a storm drain coverage, there could be any number of hazards. the road could have washed away. you just don't know. >> the national weather service confirms a tornado touched down in charlottesville. it toppled trees and damaged the roof of a high school. fortunately no one was injured. and back to the danger

surrounding the college lake dam, the national weather service says anyone who lives in low-lying areas near lynchburg below the dam should move to higher ground immediately. don? >> laura podesta here in new york. thank you. the trump administration says the russian threat to u.s. elections is real. previously the president has undermined the conclusions of the u.s. intelligence community that the u.s. is under attack. yesterday top u.s. intelligence officials raised the alarm about russian interference and assured americans they were on the case. in the words of homeland security chief kirstjen nielsen, our democracy is in the cross hairs. major garrett has more. >> we continue to see a pervasive messaging campaign by russia to try to weaken and divide the united states. >> dan coats, the director of national intelligence, and other top intelligence officials said

you president putin was extremely strong and powerful today. it came amid intensifying information of a report on robert mueller in the 2016 election. >> the nation's elections are more resilient today because of the work we're all doing, but we must continue to ensure that our democracy is protected. >> major garrett, cbs news, the white house. it's reported that a russian spy worked at the u.s. embassy in moscow for more than a decade before she was detected. the woman, a russian national, worked for the secret service, according to the britain's "guardian." service's internet and email systems but did not have access to highly classified information. she was fired last year after it was discovered she met regularly with the russian intelligence service.

location data, and the fbi has joined the search. houston police entered the home of a man suspected of killing one of former president george h.w. bush's doctors. officers surrounded his home last night following a tip from a neighbor, but when they went in the house, no one was there. he shot dr. mark hausknecht as he rode to work on july 20th. apple is the first publicly traded company in the united states to hit a market value of more than $1 trillion. it with us just 20 years ago, 1997, that apple was on the verge of bankruptcy. back then stocks sold for only a dollar. had you bought $10,000 worth of stock, it would be about $2.5 million today. it's working on the release of the next generation iphone. an abduction at a reagan

were completely understandable. the "washington post" reports an amber alert was issued after a 12-year-old girl was abducted outside reagan national airport outside of d.c. the girl is in the u.s. as part of a tour group. she was last seen leaving the airport yesterday with an unknown middle-aged asian woman. authorities say she's believed to be in extreme danger. and the "chicago tribune" reports about 200 anti-violent protesters marched to wrigley field. they briefly shut down the city's lakeshore drive, snarling rush hour traffic. >> we shall overcome. we shall overcome. we shall overcome.

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. across europe people are doing whatever they can to cool off as a heat wave engulfs the continent. records that have stood for decades, four decades, in fact, have broken their record. temperatures have reached 104 in madrid and 106 in lisbon yesterday. the nation has issued a nationwide health warning. hot air blowing in from africa is to blame. on the "cbs moneywatch," a showdown over fuel efficiency and a look ahead to the diane king hall is here in new york with more on that. good morning, diane. >> good morning, don. the labor department releases

its july jobs report. nonfarm payment payroll rose by 109,000 job rise in july. the unemployment rate is expected to be taken down to 3.9%. meanwhile the trump administration says its proposal to free u.s. design standards to increase fuel efficiency could cost t f thousand os jobs in the american auto industry. by relaxing auto standards, the administration projects 60,000 auto jobs will be lost by the year 2030. the administration also wants to revoke the authority granted california to set up its own tough mileage standards. the proposed rule could weaken one of the federal government's chief weapons against climate change, the ability to regulate emissions. attorneys general from 19 states and the district of columbia say they'll go to court to stop the mileage rollbacks.

on wall street stocks mixed but the nasdaq was the belle of the ball. the dow rose 7 points, the s&p 500 rose 13 points and nasdaq finished 19 points higher. talks between u.s. and mexican negotiators to rewrite the free trade agreement resumed this morning in washington. mexico's economy minister said discussions yesterday produced agreement on about 20 topics but that some of the toughest issues remain unresolved. you'll recall president trump vowed during the campaign to overhaul the nafta deal with mexico and canada which he called a job-killing disaster. it's dragged on since last year. and the retail chain brookstone has filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy. brookstone is known for selling quirky and luxury items from remote helicopters to massage chairs. it's closing more than 100

space station is actually a time lapse of photos of a sunrise taken by crew members on board the iss. the space station orbits the earth once every 90 minutes. it's seen about 16 sunrises and sunsets every day. ca a day after the day the u.s. casualties were returned from the korean war say they appear to be american contents. he said based on an initial examination, they're consistent with being americans. historians and scientists will try to identify the remains. >> the pope has declared that the death penalty is inadmissible under all circumstances. the change in church teaching that could influence catholic politicians, judges, and officials in the u.s. who have argued that their church was not entirely opposed to capital punishment, the pope said executions are an attack on human dignity and church would

our top stories this morning, more rain is forecast for today in lynchburg, virginia, where a nearby dam is in danger of failing. flash flood warnings are in effect and evacuations have been ordered. if the dam collapses, the city could be covered in 17 feet of water. this system stretches from georgia to vermont. and the president's national security team says the russian threats to the u.s. is real. they continue to use cyber weapons to attack the u.s. political system, something the president has reluctantly acknowledged.

they assure the people they're doing everything possible to nullify the effects. >> there's a killer lurking off the coast of florida. sea life is washing ashore. >> reporter: they're dying by the tens of thousands, fish, eel, turtles, sometimes as far as the eye can see in southwest florida. just this week one of several lifeless manatees was pulled from the water. the suspected culprit, a toxic algae bloom known as red tide. >> so have you ever seen it this bad. >> no. i've seen some bad ones, but never this bad. >> reporter: ozzie fischer. >> it's hard to breathe around here. it really stinks. >> it really stinks. imagine paying $5,000 to go on vacation and you tell your wife and kids to breathe this in. you can't. it's bad. >> reporter: it's causing respiratory illnesses for some beachgoers.
