t out taking out a loan to buy a pet. >> once they start adding in the fees, all of a sudden, a dog that you could have bought for $1,400 is $5,000. >> ninan: good evening. i'm reena ninan. we begin in portland, oregon, where a massive demonstration by a right wing group turned violent. police used tear gas to break up several small scuffles between the groups and some antifascists. temperatures were high as an officer tried to take a sign away from a woman. he ended up shoving her to the ground. when she got up and ran away, she was swarmed by several other officers. there are reports that several people were arrests. jennifer dowling of our cbs affiliate koin is there. >> reporter: we're in downtown portland where we have been following members of antifa that have just marched down here to meet up with members of patriot prayer.

>> fascists, retreat! >> reporter: however, police here are not taking any chances. they are dressed in their swat gear. they have said, "we are not messing around." you can see police here charging protesters who would not comply with orders to disperse. they made some arrests. >> projectiles, ...rocks and bottles. >> reporter: police also confiscated weapons and shot tear gas and flash grenades to break up the protesters. there were members that were not affiliated with antifa with this group. they simply do not believe in the patriot prayer group, which has been associated with the alt-right. >> the pedestrian crossings are closed. >> reporter: now, one of the big concerns with this rally is that something that happened in charlottesville a year ago. there were some confrontations. they do not want these two groups to clash and end up in a fatality. as you recall, heather heyer was run down by a vehicle at a rally like this back in charlottesville. and that was the big fear, that this could get violent. reena. >> ninan: jennifer dowling,

meanwhile, we're monitoring wild weather across the country. heavy downpours and high winds ripped the roofs off some homes in webster, which is near the connecticut border. reob wycoff from our boston station, wbz, has the latest. >> reporter: hi, reena. we were watching this storm cross from connecticut into massachusetts. and by the time we got to about 10:00 in the morning, that's when we actually saw the ghrculation move through the town of webster, tearing off roofs of the downtown section before it finally pushed off towards the northeast, towards the town of sutton. now, for 2018, it's been an interesting year for new england tornados. n've had three in new mampshire, three in massachusetts, and six in connecticut, well above average for this area. compare that to the heart of tornado alley, oklahoma-- the erme number. tutionwide, we've actually seen aglow-average numbers, but for new england, it's been a busy year, and one reason for that is the jet stream. we've had this jet stream set up

where we have these daily rain reances. the flood threat has been there. ohe good news is heading into the next couple of days, we actually have warmer temperatures and sunshine building on in. now, one place looking for the rain is actually out west, where they continue to deal with the horrible wildfire situation. red flag warnings are stretching through many states. dangerous, rapid advancement of some large fires possible with low humidity and gusty winds. you can see that california wildfires, 17 currently burning. and, reena, unfortunately, over the next couple of days, no rainfall in sight. sck to you. >> ninan: jacob wycoff, jacob, ofank you. thousands of firefighters are battling 17 large wildfires in california. this is the ranch fire. it's in northern california's lake county. nearly 40,000 residents are under evacuation orders tiroughout the state. meantime, friends and family of fellow firefighters will remember hotshot brian hughes. 33-year-old hughes died last

sunday battling the ferguson fire near yosemite national park. first lady melania trump appears to be trying to calm down the twitter war her husband unleashed against lebron james saturday. her spokeswoman released a statement saying that the first ohdy would be willing to visit the new school james opened in ohio. weijia jiang explains what prompted president trump's latest outburst. th i'm truly excited. >> reporter: n.b.a. star lebron james appeared on cnn this week to talk about opening a new school for disadvantaged youth in his home town of akron, ohio. but the conversation quickly turned to president trump. w he's dividing us, and what i noticed over the last few months, that he's kind of used sport to kind of divide us, and i-- and that's something that i can't relate to. ondeeporter: the president responded on twitter last night, writing, "lebron james was just interviewed by the dumbest man on television, don lemon. he made lebron look smart, which en't easy to do." tding to the drama, today the

out a statement that appears to reverse hidast week and the assistant coach at the center of the controversy is also speaking out for the first time. nikki battiste reports. >> he asked me what the hell is going on. i told him, "courtney is accusing me that i committed domestic violence. i didn't." >> reporter: ohio state's recently fired assistant football coach zach smith is defending his former boss, urban meyer. >> he looked at me and said, "i swear to god, zach, if i find out you hit her, you're done. you're fired." and i said, "i understand, coach. i didn't, i'm fine." >> reporter: in an interview with espn, smith said they discussed domestic violence ,llegations made by smith's now-ex-wife, courtney, in 2015, and that meyer handled it hoperly. .> i don't think it's his job to investigate, to ask questions, to talk to her. >> reporter: meyer first denied ty knowledge of the 2015 abuse allegations to reporters in y.ly. e> i got a text late last night that something happened in 2015, and there was nothing, unless, once again, there's nothing-- once again, i don't know who n aates a story like that. h reporter: but in a statement

s k buckeyes kick off their season september 1. >> ninan: nikki, have we heard from the university at all at this point? >> reporter: they have not commented on what urban meyer may have told his boss, the athletic director, about the 2015 incident, but they have formed an independent board to oaad this investigation. >> ninan: all right, nikki battiste, thank you very much. a russian helicopter crashed near the arctic circle. 15 passengers and 3 crew members were killed. officials say the aircraft had just taken off from a helipad near a siberian oil field when its blades collided with another nolicopter. that chopper landed safely. the helicopters belonged to a fleet run by a russian airline. a stifling heat wave is blanketing europe this weekend. in the netherlands, officials had to close some roadways because the intense heat melted the asphalt. in lisbon, portugal, the mercury peaked at 111 degrees. and in frankfurt, germany, the thermometer reached 97. seth doane reports. >> reporter: europeans are united in seeking shade and some ice water.

by now, many are wishing those osmperature readings were in fahrenheit, not celsius. spain and portugal are getting the brunt of the hot air that's blown in from africa. wildfires, which are a regular problem in summer months, are fueled by these hot, dry conditions. we witnessed the fire devastation last week in greece. it's triple-digit temperatures at peak tourist times. rome's spanish steps were searing, so the lockhart family gave up on their photo-op. >> i tried to sit down with a photograph, but they were burning our bottoms, so we moved down. >> reporter: the city of rome esstributed 8,000 bottles of water earlier this week to try to stave off dehydration, while the city's zoo tried blocks of ice and refreshing fruit to keep tigers and hippos cool. farmers in germany are seeking gre than $1 billion in drought aid. there's the same pain in the u.k. simon maiklem figures the

>> ninan: animal lovers >> ninan: animal lovers are rslling attention to eontroversial tactics being used by some pet stores. customers say that they thought they were taking out a loan to own a pricey pet, but instead, they claim they were duped into signing lease agreements. vladimir duthiers has the story. >> i was just appalled. >> reporter: courtney peterman says she thought she was taking out a $3,000 loan to buy dogs cass and max at a connecticut pet store in 2015. she signed a contract, made a $187 payment, and took the dogs ayme. >> good boy! >> reporter: 18 months later peter man expected the loan to be paid off but she called the bang bankand was told she had almost 20 more payments to go. >> when i asked how that was lssible when it was only a $3,000 loan, and i was told it wasn't a loan at that point. it was a lease. >> reporter: she kept making enyments, fearing the worst about what would happen if she defaulted. >> i was like, okay, what bills

attorney with the federal trade commission. she says pet leasing has been on tie f.t.c.'s radar for about 3 years, and while it's not illegal, pet stores can be held responsible. >> companies have an obligation to make sure, first, that consumers know it is a lease; second that the terms need to be very clear upfront. consumers need to read these contracts very, very carefully. >> reporter: peterman was able to get out of her lease after filing a complaint with the better business bureau. in the end, she paid about e,600 to officially own the dogs. >> don't finance a dog ever. if you don't have the means to pay for a dog, you shouldn't be paying for one. >> reporter: last year, california and nevada banned pet leasing. this year, new york is expected to be the third state to ban the practice. we reached out to the connecticut pet store where courtney peterman bought her dispogz have not heard back. wags lending would not provide a comment for our story. vladimir duthiers cbs news, new york.

the rhino kept ramming the s.u.v. as it drove off, even as zookeepers tried to distract it. park officials say a nearby female rhino apparently sparked the male's rage. no one was injured. masih alinejad is a prominent oranian journalist and activist. she's the author of "the wind in my hair: my fight for freedom in modern iran." i recently spoke with her about the treatment of women in iran, and why she boycotted wearing arf. here's part of my interview. >> you have to understand we are not fighting against a small aece of cloth. we are actually challenging the foundational bloc of the islamic republic of iran. >> ninan: you call yourself the product of the iranian revelation. your parents supported the revolution, and you did not. >> my parents actually supported the revolution because they were very poor. and none of the promises have sen delivered so far. r> ninan: your own sister came int on state television in iran and spoke out against what
