rocked with aftershocks after a deadly earthquake strikes a popular tourist area. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, president trump acknowledged that a meeting at trump tower in 2016 in which his son met with a russian lawyer was about digging up dirt about hillary clinton. that contradicts his statement earlier. the meeting was a critical part of robert mueller's investigation. the president tweeted yesterday that the meeting was totally legal and that he knew nothing about it. laura podesta is here in new york. good morning, laura. >> good morning, anne-marie. president trump is spending the week vacationing at his new jersey golf club. before playing golf with senator lindsey graham yesterday, he fired off a number of tweets on the investigation and one in particular changes the story of

that highly scrutinized meeting his son had during the campaign. president trump now says a 2016 meeting top men -- members of his campaign had with a russian lawyer was to get information on a political opponent. the meeting at trump tower, which the president added he did not know about, has been a focus of robert mueller's investigation in the interference of the 2016 presidential election. >> the question is how would it be illegal. the real question here is would a meeting of that nature constitute a violation -- the meeting itself constitute a violation of the law. >> jay sekulow downplayed the meeting which has been evolved over time. he said the meeting was, quote, about the adoption of russian children. trump junior later released emails which showed he thought the russian lawyer had dirt on hillary clinton, to which he replied, i love it. >> i think there's plenty of

evidence of collusion or conspiracy in plain sight. >> democratic congressman adam schist says the president needs to separation the investigation from russia's efforts to hack election campaigns. >> the president can't distinguish between any allegations of conspiracy against his campaign and the broader problem of russia continuing to interfere in our elections. >> to other sunday tweets by the president, he called the investigation a witch hunt. in addition to donald trump, jared kushner and paul manafort also attended the 2016 anne-marie? >> laura podesta, thank you. five people who were killed when the plane crashed in santa ana, california, died yesterday. it crash as it was attempting to land. the pilot declared an emergency before the plane came down in a

parking lot and hit an unoccupied car. no one on the ground was injured. the faa, though, is investigating. and this morning rescue crews are trying to reach a sightseeing plane that crashed saturday in alaska. the plane crashed on a mountain ridge in denali national park. four passengers and the pie lot were onboard. the pilot phoned in and said there were injuries, but there's no word on how serious the injuries are. cloud cover cover is hampering rescue efforts. overseas now, a deadly earthquake in indonesia has caused massive damage. the 7.0 earthquake struck early yesterday morning. the popular tourist island of lombok was hard hit. it was the second strongest quake to hit the area in a week. more than a thousand tourists have been evacuated, and officials say buildings have been destroyed.

hundr hundreds are dead. the death toll is expected to rise. and at least 18 major wildfires are burning in california this morning. in total, eight people have been killed. the latest is a utility employee who was working near the carr fire in northern california. to the south, the two fires forming the mendocino complex have burned more than 400 square miles. it's one of the largest on record in the state and together they're 33% contained and have destroyed 68 homes. this past weekend new evacuation orders were issued. mireya villarreal reports. >> reporter: strong winds fueled the mends s the mendocino complex fire, now the fifth largest fire in state history with nearly 2,055 acres have burned. >> you get embers that land in a

particular area and they all start a fire and start a new head fire literally and runs at us. >> reporter: to the north, the so-called carr fire has continued to prove deadly. an employee became the seventh victim while working on restoration efforts near ledding. >> this has been a challenging and deadly fire season just in the month of july. four firefighters perished fighting the fires in california. many, many civilians and members of the public have been put at risk and a number of fatalities. >> reporter: president trump put forth federal funds to help with counties with the most damage. mireya villarreal, cbs news, los angeles. well, it was a violent weekend in chicago. in less than seven hours starting at around midnight saturday, at least 40 people were shot. four of them died. police say most of the gunfire was targeted and gang-related. the worst of it was on chicago's west side. 25 people were shot in separate attacks. police say people were targeted following a funeral, at a block party, and other gatherings. the youngest victim was an

11-year-old boy. and today the trump administration plans to reimpose sanctions against iran that were lifted under the 2015 accord. secretary of state mike pompeo calls the sanctions an important pillar in u.s. policy toward iran. in iran protesters took to the streets to demonstrate against the government. roxana saberi has our report. >> reporter: the protests appeared to be scattered and sporadic, but they share the same message. dissatisfaction with the economy and the country's leader. in this video posted online, demonstrators near tehran shouted, get lost. authorities are playing down the protests while stepping up the security. in this clip, a woman gives a play-by-play of what she prote heading them off.

they used tear gas, she said. she adds, this is how people here live. they don't even have a right to protest. the protests come as the iranians embrace for the return of u.s. sanctions on monday. those sanctions have been looming since may when president trump withdrew the u.s. from the nuclear deal with iran. tensions have already soared in recent months as the value has sank. the economy is so vulnerable to sanctions because it's poorly managed and corrupt. others blame president trump for breaking the nuclear agreement. this man says, the reality is he's a liar and we cannot trust his word. iran's supreme leader and president have not responldsed publicly to president trump's talks. on sunday they announced new plans to fight the u.s. sanctions. one is making goods and medicines available at lower prices. roxana saberi, cbs news, london.

well, investigators looking into the disappearance of iowa college student mollie tibbetts are being tight-lipped about her case. the reward has been increased to $260,000. tib boets was last seen on july 18th in the small town of brooklyn, iowa. her family believes she was abducted but still alive. paul manafort's right-hand man is expected to testify today at trial. manafort's long-time associate rick gates has been cooperating with robert mueller's investigation after accepting a plea deal. gates also served in a senior role on the trump campaign. on friday one of manafort's tax preparers admitted she helped disguise $900,000 in foreign income to reduce manafort's tax burden. and coming up on the "morning news," a discovery in the desert. police find nearly a dozen children living in squaller. and a hollywood action star takes a political role.

authorities in venezuela are hunting for those behind a failed attempt to apparently attempt to assassinate robert nicolas maduro. drones carrying explosives de-- detonated as maduro was giving a live speech in caracas on surrender. he's blaming right-winged opponents in venezuela. six people have been arrested. the "atlanta those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the "atlanta journal-constitution" reports the search for a missing 3-year-old boy led to the discovery of 11 children and three women living in a filthy makeshift compound in the new mexico desert. the boy's father was wanted for

abducting his son last december in georgia. investigators discovered the site on friday an reportedly receive a message from someone in the compound saying they were starving and needed food and water. they did not find the missing boy. the father and missing boy are expected in court today. singer demi lovato broke her silence after being hospitalized last month for an apparent overdose. in an instagram she said an illness and addiction doesn't fade and is something she must continue to overcome. she also thanked her fans, family, and the staff at los angeles hospital where she's been treated. lovato says she needs time to heal and vowed the keep on fighting. the three major indices finished slightly higher this past week boosted by a strong finish on friday. strong market data and quarterly earnings pushed stocks higher. a boost for warren buffet's berkshire hathaway. it reported a second quarter profit almost triple the same time a year ago. buffett's conglomerate runs and has stakes in businesses that range from railroads to retailers such as dairy queen. it improved its business in the insurances by and the broader health of the u.s. economy. as we reported job growth remains strong. in fact, the u.s. is on pace to add 2.6 million jobs this year. the majority of job gains, 58.5% increase ending in may were in counties that backed hillary clinton in 2016, according to the "associated press." and a striking number of counties supported president trump and smaller towns in the country's city and interior are losing jobs.

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. the executive producer of cbs's "60 minutes" will not be returning to work today from a scheduled vacation amid an investigation into alleged sexual misconduct. in a statement yesterday, cbs news said that having heard the investigation will be wrapping up soon, jeff has decided to stay on vacation. a lawyer for fager says it was fager's decision and 100% voluntary. an outside law firm is expected to end its investigation this month in claims made in a kwtd new yorker" magazine. employees say fager allowed harassment and would touch employees in ways that would make them uncomfortable at company doings.

fager has denied any wrongdoing. two outside law firms are investigating allegations against cbs chairman and ceo les moonves. he says he doesn't recall any alleged incidents. >> michigan beachgoers took to a whole new level of lending a helping hand. yesterday the beachgoers formed a human chain to try to reach a swimmer. he was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. others had trouble in the water. another man drowned and three others were hospitalized after being pulled out. and investigators in pittsburgh are trying to figure out what caused a freight train to derail. several derailed yesterday sending shipping containers tumbling down a hillside onto light trackings below. officials say there were no injuries and no hazard ousz materials were involved, but they're warning commuters to be prepared for a long rush hour
