firefighters bracing for a difficult someday battling a new phrase in steep terrain on the orange and river side county boarders. this is a live -- boarders. this is a live look at the smoke rising. it started yesterday and grew to 4,000 acres in the cleveland national forest. evacuations are underway. >> so i see a little smoke. we better go down there. we rushed down and got to the helicopter pad. and the fire is already -- flames are across the road. two hikers were air lifted to safety. smoke can be seen from catalina island. and the mendocino complex fire exploded into the record books, becoming the largest in modern state history. >> that is a combination of the river and ranch fires. it burned an area 100 square mile ts larger -- miles larger

than the size of new york city. and it's one of 15 fires in cal. -- california. and temperatures in the 90s today. it took the mendocino fire ten days to make history as cal car california's largest fire ever. it destroyed 150 structures threatens thousands more. >> we can't put ground personnel in some of those areas. >> reporter: some mandatory evacuations were reduced and hundreds of people could go home. south of the mendocino national forest boundary and west of state route 29. and good news nor people near -- for yomi national park. some roads are up right up to the boundary of the park, which remains closed after winds pushed the fire past containment lines over the weekend.

4,000 feet up is where the smoke is hanging. the breeze is pushing in the clouds coverage around the bay and coastline and that's protecting places like san francisco from the smoke. here's the current air quality. the areas in red are unhealthy. and it's in the moderate to good range. and you can get a little bit of relief. the smoke is moving in because of a northwest wind direction. later on tonight, it will shift to a west direction: and that will push the smoke across places like sacramento and lake tahoe. good to moderate for the air quality. the smoke is sitting up high in the atmosphere. right now, the low in the atmosphere would be this right here. we have clouds hanging over the golden gate bridge. stubborn clouds and 55 in san francisco. concord, 76.
