mitds to doing. >> this fire tornado is actually just inside the fire line. and from north to south, wildfires continue to rage across california. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. so we begin with politics. this morning a closely watched congressional election in ohio is too close to call. races were held in five states yesterday. they were primaries for governors and house seats and several key contests as democrats look to regain control of the house, but it was special election in ohio's 12th congressional district that attracted the most attention, and democrats, republicans, and president trump. laura podesta is here in new york. laura, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. yes, the special election in the battleground state of ohio is to replace a republican congressman who quit after becoming frustrated with his own party. the race was expected to be close, but not this close.ee

to be counted, and it could be weeks before we know the winner. the special election race between republican troy balderson and democrat danny o'connor in ohio's 12th district is too close to call. balderson leads o'connor by more fewer than 2,000 votes but more than 8 thousand provisional and absentee ballots have to be counted, which could trigger a mandatory recount. that didn't stop balderson from claiming victory. >> it's time to get to work. over the next three months, i'm going to do everything i can to keep america grn great again. >> president trump handedly won in 2016. he put the full weight of his support behind balderson, going to ohio over the weekend to campaign for him. >> can you believe how close this is? we are in a tied ball game. >> regardless of who comes out

on top, the two will face each other again in november's general election. four other states held primaries yesterday. democratic senator claire mccaskill will face josh hawley, a republican, in what's expected to be a close race. >> this is a state that voted for president trump by 20 points. being independent in this state means standing up to your liberal parties. >> and in michigan the president tweeted that iraq war veteran john james is a future star of the republican party after he ran against debbie stabenow. and in the race for governor in kansas, republican kris kobach has a slight lead over current republican jeff colyer though the race has yet to be called while votes are still being counted. president trump tweeted a full endorsement of kobach less than 24 hour before the polls opened. anne-marie?

>> laura podesta here in new york. thank you so much, laura. ahead on "cbs this morning," the latest from ohio on the too-close-to-call special election and what it may mean for democrats to retake the house. in missouri, voters rejected a right to work law. unis say it would have led to lower wages. businesses said it could have led to more jobs. 27 other states have laws against compulsory union fees. five states have enacted such laws since 2012. at paul manafort's financial fraud trial, rick gates is expected to return to the stand today. gates is the prosecution's star witness. yesterday during cross examination defense attorneys grill gates about his personal life and inability to tell the truth. paula reid has more. >> reporter: after hours of cross-examination of the prosecution's star witness, paul

manafort's lawyer offered this assessment. attorney kevin downing attacks rick gates' testimony one day after his testify that his former boss knowingly committed crimes. you knowingly and intentionally lied, defense attorney kevin downing asked? uh, yes. >> downing peppered gates with questionsing what was dubbed as the secret life of rick gates. he admitted to having a secret apartment in london to facilitate a secret marital affair but denied uses funds. it's possible, gates conceded. as gates struggled to answer questions about wire transfers he authorized, downing pointed out gates' testimony was much clearer when the prosecution was dock the questioning.

the trade dispute is dependent on getting trade secrets from u.s. companies. and it's reported president trump's former attorney udcohen any crime. at issue is whether income from cohen's taxi cab business in new york was underreported. that's according to "the wall street journal." authorities are also looking into whether cohen lied on loan applications. >> and now to california on what is shaping up to be the worst fire season in state history. in southern california, southern los angeles, a fire tornado erupted in the so-called holy fire. firefighters are working to keep it away from homes. some orange county residents had meantime up north, the largest th res state history, the m

burning slower. this morning there are 18 fires. prosecutor says a pennsylvania police officer they've charged with voluntary manslaughter is relatively inexperienced and made an unreasonable decision about his safety. he shot and killed a man from new jersey last month. nikki battiste has the details. >> reporter: the fatal shooting of joseph santos was captured on this cellphone video. you can hear jonathan roselle give commands before giving fire shots, killing the 44-year-old who was unarmed. lehigh county district attorney jim martyn called it unjustified. >> i have concluded he did not have to discharge his weapon. >> reporter: the incident happens after callers reported a man acting erratically outside a water park in pennsylvania. >> a call to report a male

jumping on cars in front of downey park. he's in blue shorts. >> reporter: santos can be seen here jumping on top of roselle's patrol car. he had been with the police department for five months before the incident. >> officer roselle stated to the first responding officer that he thought, quote, [ bleep ] up. >> reporter: d ta tracked by bowling green state university, since 2005, 91 officers have been charged in police-fatal shootings. santos leaves behind three children. >> when father's day comes, he will not be here to celebrate. >> he's not releasing roselli's body cam recordings until the examination ends. he's being held without bail.

the missing boy's father allegedly abducted him in georgia in december. the father was arrested on friday along with four other adults when 11 starving children living in filthy conditions were found there. the "chicago tribune" reports the city is deploying hundreds of additional officers the violence-plagued neighborhoods. it comes after the most violent weekend in chicago in more than two years. 74 people were shot including 12 who were killed between friday afternoon and monday morning. dional officers have dent said been added. that number will increase to 600 by the weekend. the "los angeles times" says retired aerospace executive wanda austin was named interim president at usc after c.l. max nick quyaas -- ni for allegatio norring sexual abuse complaints

on the "cbs moneywatch," a dream job for barbecue lovers, and a possible new path for tesla. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, diane. >> good morning, anne-marie. well, tesla's ceo elon musk is considering taking his company private. he sent out a tweet shocking shareholders. he said tesla's shares have been subject to wild price swings which has been a major distraction. musk says no final decision has been made, but he did say shareholders could opt to remain as investors or be bought out at $420 a share. it closed at $379.57 a share. on wall street, more strong second quarter earnings fueled optimism about the economy. that led to solid gains in tech.

industrial and banking shares. the dow rallied 126 points. the s&p 500 added 8 points. the nasdaq rose 23 points. today the new york city kounlt is considering a proposal to put a one-year cap on the number of new licenses for riail iee and lyft. new york would be the first to do that. uber, lyft, and other ridesharing companies have heavily impacted the cab services. cab services support this, but ridesharing services have been an important part of the system. they're common particularly in minority neighborhoods. manwhile papa john's reports a key sales figure fell 10.5%. the company blames its founder. the pizza chain is trying to distance itself from john schnatter. he was forced out after a report last month revealed he used a racial epithet during a media training session.

cows helped corral a stolen car suspect in florida. a seminole county sheriff's officer's dash cam captured the scene of sunday night. the stolen suv crashed into a ditch and two people ran away. the video shows about 20 cows chasing a woman. they eventually herded suspect right to waiting officers. a new report says lyme disease has spread to all 50 states. the quest diagnostic report says the number of cases continues to rise. it's exploded in areas like california and florida. the company says ticks are finding it easier to survive in new regions and spreading diseases to human. diseases carried in ticks are normally found in the northeast. chicago is mourning the death of one of its beloved sports stars. hockey hall of famer and chicago blackhawks star stan mikita died yesterday.

he had been diagnosed in poor health with lewy body dementia. he played his entire career with the blackhawks, helping them win a stanley cup in 1961. he's the team's all-time leader in assists, points, and games, and he was 78. this is the "cbs morning news." 78.
