switches to be hit in a very specific order. investigators are trying to learn more about richard russell and how he was able to pull this off. the fbi says it recovered flight data recorder recovered from the plane stolen friday night. >> hey, pilot guy, can this thing do a back flip thing? >> officials want to know how and why richard "beebo" russell took a plane for a joy ride before crashing it on an island near seattle before killing himself. >> would call this a wakeup call for the airlines. >> captain ross aimer is a united airline pilot. he said there was nothing stopping him from getting to the plane as an employee. >> i was quite surprised that a person that claims to have had only background in video games was able to start this airplane, taxi it out, and actually take off and do those maneuvers.

counterprotesters. tony dokoupil has our report. >> reporter: police escorted a group of white supremacists through a much larger group of counterprotesters. they gathered in lafayette square just across the street from the white house. >> we're here for first amendment. >> reporter: activist jason kessler organized the event in virginia one year ago that led to the death of protester heather heyer. >> i'm okay with sharing this country with people from around the world, but if you bring in too many people at once, it's not the same country anymore. >> reporter: counterprotesters gathered early in d.c. many say they came out to make a statement that there's no room for bigotry in this country. >> i'm here because i'm a white person. i don't want to be associated

with the neo-nazis, white supremacists, and that hate. >> heather hire's mom was there to urge others. >> i don't want other mothers to be in my spot. i don't want other mothers to go through this. >> reporter: sunday's unite the white rally ended sooner than anticipated. kessler and 30 of his supporters left washington in van, escorted once again by police. tony dokoupil, cbs news, new york. the baltimore police officer caught on video punching a man repeatedly has resigned. the officer asked the man for identification saturday. he refused, and that's when the trouble started. as one officer punched the man, another officer appears to try to control the situation and the crowd. the officer involved was

suspended before he resigned. the second officer was put on administrative leave. the victim identified as dashawn mcgrier was not put in custody. he suffered bruised ribs and a broken jaw. connect ellison is one of several running in the state's primary. the allegations surfaced over the weekend when karen monaghan's son said he had seen hundreds of angry texts from ellison to his mother and her had seen hundreds of angry texts from ellison to his mother. this morning residents in northern new jersey are cleaning up following devastating flooding in new jersey. cars washed away and homes suffered such significant damage

it's now on a seven-year journey to provide scientists with new information about our sun. the probe will get within 3.8 million miles of the sun's surface, the closest ever by a spacecraft. it's built to withstand heat and radiation. brooks koepka holds up tiger woods, and a college football coach is under scrutiny. "the baltimore sun" reports the university of maryland launched an external investigation into the treatment of student athletes. the school put head coach d.j. durkin and three others on leave on saturday. they're accused of abusive behavior. it follows the death of defensive lineman jordan mcnair who died from apparent heatstroke after a workout. the "star-telegram" reports on body camera video of a school resource officer handcuffing an

autistic 10-year-old boy. a video shows the 10-year-old swinging a computer mouse. he became disruptive. officer eric coulston is shown pinning him to the ground before putting handcuffs on him. they found coulston violated no laws or policies. npr says utah is sending a new statue to represent the state to the u.s. capitol. a statue of martha hughes cannon will be installed in statuary hall. cannon was the first woman elected state senator in the country. her statue will replace one of the inventors of the television. utah wants to show their state's early history as a leader in women's achievement. and the "usa today" says golfer brooks koepka held off tiger woods to win the pga championship. >> koepka captures the pga championship.

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. on the "cbs moneywatch," russia responds to u.s. sanctions, and the president backs a harley boycott. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, diane. >> good morning, anne-marie. president trump is backing calls for a boycott of motorcycle maker harley-davidson. in june it announced it was moving production outside of the u.s. it blames retaliation for tariffs imposed on the european union. harley says it expects the new tariffs will cost it $100 million annually. yesterday the president tweeted, quote, many harley-davidson owners plan to boycott the companies manufacturing moves overseas. great. most other companies are coming

in our direction including harley competitors. a really bad move. soon the u.s. will have a level playing field or better, unquote. stockmarkets in this country and abroad are keeping close tabs on financial issues in turkey and its potential impact of the global economy. the lyre plunged last week, hitting a record low friday. the turkish government says it has a plan to present this morning to ease financial concerns. russia is decreasing its holdings in u.s. securities in response to the latest round of u.s. sanctions. the russian finance minister said yesterday there are no plans to to shut down u.s. companies in russia. last week the trump administration said it would impose new sanctions on russia after determining moscow used a nerve agent against a former russian agentle and his daughter. the new sanctions are scheduled to go into effect at the end of

a massive sinkhole opened up in china after heavy rains. it swallowed two parked cars and nearly a third. dozens of people rushed to help saturday. they tied a long rope to the car. the car was finally pulled away from the sinkhole. torrential rain caused 20 cave-ins on central roads and several homes were destroyed. there's a deadly problem afflicting waterways throughout the state. as our affiliate andrea marvin explains, toxic algae bloom is killing marine life. >> water is essential to life. >> reporter: bringing her children to understand the importance of standing for earth. >> i want them to have a sense of activism and they're responsible for what happens in their world. >> reporter: christina is part

rally in washington, d.c. they were overshadowed by thousands of counterprotesters. in charlottesville, there were rallies and vigils. the mother of a woman killed at last year's rally says the country's racial wounds still have not healed. and the flight data recorder from a plane stolen by a airplane worker in seattle has been recovered. richard russell performed acrobatic stunts and joked with air traffic controllers before crashing on a remote island near seattle. he died in the crash. it's unclear if the crash was deliberate or accidental. well, firefighters made progress against the holy fire in southern california, which has burned more than 3,500 square miles. it's one of 25 fires burning in the state. jonathan vigliotti is there. >> reporter: firefighters told us there's only so much they can do. the flames are in the hanlds of mother nature.

and take a look at how it brought flames right through the valley, ripping through the brush and vehicles before abruptly coming to a stop. them the winds changed direct, going this way sparing hundreds of homes in its paths. for the past few days, we have watched planes and helicopters douse the area with fire retardant. winds have died down, allowing evacuated residents to return home. last night the red cross handed out face mask and garbage bags to homeowners. and the first day of school has been pushed back a week because of poor air quality and cleanup. over 20,000 acres of this land reduced to ash. now the main concern looking forward, the rainy season and the possibility of mudslides. well, coming up only on "cbs this morning," an update on the golden state killer as authorities plan to announce a new charge today against the suspect joseph desalvo. plus, two indiana moms are demanding answers after a test revealed cancer-causing contaminants in some neighborhood homes.
