headquarters in new york, i'm nikki battiste in for anne-marie green. former cia director john brennan says i will not relent. president trump revoked brennan's security clearance in what some call a blatant act of retribution against a frequent critic. the president also threatened to yank security clearance from other top intelligence officials. john schiumo is here in new york. john, good morning. >> good morning to you, nikki. democrats may say it's supporters say revoking security clearance is a way to protect america. former cia director john brennan has been stripped of his security clearance by president trump. >> any benefits senior officials might glean from confrontations with mr. brennan are now outweighed by the risks posed by

his erratic conduct and behavior. >> brennan is a vocal critic of president trump. he responded on msnbc. >> i do believe that mr. trump decided to take this action as he's done with others to try to intimidate and suppress any criticism of him or his administration. >> mr. trump has made his disdain for brennan clear. >> i have no confidence in a guy like brennan. i think he's a total low life. >> the white house says it's reviewing other former obama officials and a district attorney. some had involvement with the russian investigation including former director of national intelligence james clapper. >> perhaps that's being held against me, i don't know. i suspect it has more to do with my criticism of the president. >> democrats say this is an enemy's list. >> and the closest thing i can think on a historical basis is what mr. nixon did. >> white house press secretary sarah sanders was asked why the president mass not ordered the review of any republicans including his former national

trump's former campaign manager is guilty. it doesn't involve allegations of russian election interference or possible collusion. the husband of a missing pregnant colorado woman and her two daughters is under arrest this morning. 34-year-old shanann watts and her daughters ages 3 and 4 were reported missing from their home north of denver monday. police searched her home last night. chris watts is being held in the county jail awaiting charges. yesterday he pleaded for his family's safe return. in connecticut police are investigating an overdose outbreak of k2, a synthetic marijuana affecting people at a park in new haven. people fell ill throughout the day yesterday. a man who's believed to be connected to some of the indianapolis accidents has been arrested. tony dokoupil has ow report. >> reporter: calls began streaming in. >> emergency 1, responding to an

alarm, new haven green. >> reporter: dozens of people suffering from nausea, vomiting, some unconscious, suspected of overdosing on a synthetic marijuana known as k2. >> even when we were trying to return people to service, they were passing victims on the ground. >> reporter: during the press conference, another victim. >> we're getting another call. >> reporter: emergency workers rushing to respond. >> he's not moving. >> come on, katy, let's go. >> reporter: the drug enforcement administration has tried to crack down on the distribution of k2, but it hasn't stopped the rise in use. across the country in the past three years, more than 13 thousand people have been reportedly sickened by cannabinoid k2. >> it's a national problem. >> reporter: it's important to point out while there were nor fatalities, it's much more dangerous than the legal marijuana now available in many u.s. states. tony dokoupil, cbs news, new haven, connecticut.

the power is back on at reagan national airport following a blackout last night. reagan national in virginia serves the nation's capitol. power was lost for about an hour and a half. the cause of the outage is under investigation. generators kicked in to operate essential functions such as air traffic control, but the jet bridges connecting planes to the terminal were affected. some passengers were stuck on planes for over an hour, and four flights were diverted. we're learning more about how the roman catholic church covered up rampant sexual abuse by priests in the state of pennsylvania. the state's attorney general reported more than 301 priests sexually abused more than a thousand young victims. they say predator priests had strategies for concealing the truth. dr religus faith in them to vi

overseas now, the death toll of the collapse of a bridge in genoa, italy, has reached at least 39. more bodies were pulled from the wreckage yesterday. they're looking at possible maintenance issues and design flaws, and survivors recount miraculous escapes. >> reporter: this survivor knows how very close she was to plunging over the bridge. >> i would have died. >> you would have died. >> yeah. >> reporter: the mother of two said the bridge started shaking violently, and then the a-frame collapsed like flour. >> the column fall down like flour. >> like flour. >> like flour. it was like between towers. >> it was just dust. >> yeah. >> reporter: she abandoned her car and ran for her life. >> reporter: these two people were further back. >> people were shouting. >> we couldn't go anywhere.

>>clos a close call for two kids in massachusetts tuesday. their toy electric car caught fire moments after they were in it. their mother says they were driving up a hill when she noticed an electrical smell and saw smoke coming out of the hood. >> i think that was the really scary thing. were buckled in and they were little, so neither of them could have gotten themselves out. >> the mom rushed over and got her two kids out. she says that within minutes, all that was left was a small bucket of charred plastic and metal. the family recently bought the $500 model car. the fire chief said the fire started where the batteries are. the manufacturer department respond to a request for comment. there's a measles outbreak in nearly two dozen states, and a new york governor makes a shocking comment. those are some of the stories on this morning's newsstand.>>sa" k

"newsweek" reports on measles outbreak in the u.s. the cdc says it is monitoring the outbreak in 21 states. more than 100 people were reported to have contracted the viral infection. health officials say the majority of people who contracted measles didn't get vaccinated. symptoms including high fever, runny nose, cough, and watery

witnesses say he was swimming far off the beach. it's the first shark attack on a human at the popular summer tourist destination since 2012. ecommerce giant bans the sale of guns. and the maker of corona beer bets big on cannabis. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, diane. >> good morning, nikki. well, worries about global economic growth, particularly the economy in china, sent stocks on wall street lower. a drop in profit of the chinese stock giant surprised investors. now, in this country, retailers took a hecht after macy's reported slowing sales. shares of macy's, in fact, sank nearly 16%. meantime the price of u.s. crude dropped 3%. as to where the major averages finish, the dow lost is 37 point, the s&p fell 21 points, its biggest decline since late june. and the nasdaq dropped 96 points. the canadian ecommerce shop

shopify is banning merchants from selling some firearms. more than 600,000 businesses use shopify to sell goods. the list of items include automatic weapons and silencers used on semiautomatic weapons. shopify reviews and changes its rules from time to time. earlier this year major retailers including walmart's and dick's sporting goods changed their policy. uber is still struggling to make money. sales for the ride-hailing app jumped to 2. billion. that figure strips out items such as promotions, drivers' fee, taxes, and overhaul. still, that is an improvement from over a 1 billion dollar loss during the same time last year. consumer electronics giant best buy is pushing into the health field. best buy is buying a great caca a company that buys response devices for the aging.

forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ and we all shine on like the moon and the stars and the sun ♪ fans of the beatles held a rally in new york city's central park yesterday. they're calling on the patrol board to deny the release of john lennon's killer. 63-year-old mark david chapman is scheduled to go before the parole board next week. it's his tenth attempt at freedom. chapman shot lennon outside of his manhattan apartment building in 1980. there's a baby boom going on at a hospital. but it's not the patients. it's the nurses that are pregnant. the first baby was already born.

five nurses are due next month, another in october, and the rest by january. they say it wasn't planned. there's also a nursing assistant that's pregnant. it was a dream come true for a 6-year-old girl from ohio. beatrice paulus got a chance to swim with the mermaids at florida's weeki wachee park last week. she was diagnosed with a rare life-threatening disease. thanks to the make-a-wish foundation, she was all smiles on tuesday. she even got her very own mermaid tail and swan with the mermaids for a while. and a dancing couple made a big splash with their dance moves. they were dancing at boston harbor hotel on tuesday, but got a little too close to the edge. they tumbled into the water below. the couple was able to get quickly out of the water and are said to be okay. coming up on "cbs this morning," actor ruth wilson from "the affair" joins us in studio 57. i'm nikki battiste. this is the "cbs morning news."
