flowers and take pictures. >> aretha franklin died this morning in detroit. he had pancreatic cancer. ♪ [ music ] . >> reporter: she sang and lived with soul and style. ♪ [ music ] . >> reporter: the daughter of a baptist preacher, aretha franklin got her start in the church choir. she became a sting sing -- single mother in her teens. by the 1960s, she was known as the queen of soul. her biggest hit respect became an anthem of the civil rights and women's movements. she won two grammys for the song and an award from martin luther king, jr. a string of hits followed in the 1960s and 1970s. ♪ [ music ] . . am awards for her signature ded

mix of gospel, blues, rock, and pop. >> hopefully, i touch someone in a positive way. >> reporter: in 1987 she became the first female art tis induct inducted -- artist inducted in the rock and roll hall of fame. her two marriages ended in divorce, but she raised four sons and she remained an exuberant presence on stage. ♪ [ music ] . >> reporter: in later years, the honors rolled in. the presidential medal of freedom and a featured roll at president obama's inauguration. she stole the spotlight at the 2014 premier for the movie selma. but in 2017, she appeared frail, singing for elton john's aids foundation.

at that point, she had already announced it would be her final year performing in concert. ♪ [ music ] . >> reporter: as word spread that she was gravely ill, aretha franklin's friends and fans called to say a little prayer for the queen of soul. ♪ [ music ] . >> reporter: cbs news. >> and right now, tributes are pouring in from celebrity us. paul -- celebrities. paul mk cartny -- mkccartney wrote this. and elton john praised her, calling her the greatest soul arrow ti of -- artist of all time. and jackie ward is in san francisco. . >> reporter: 47 years ago, aretha franklin recorded a live album here at the fillmore west. a music critic was inside as the queen of soul took stage.

it's been an incredible life, incredible statement. she's imbedded into fabric of our country. >> reporter: coming stone named the album one of the 50 greatest live albums of all time. >> god put her on this earth to sing. and before her death, sources say she hand picked jennifer hudson to star in a biopic about her life. it will be where's reesed next year -- released next year. she was 76 years old. and police are looking for a man who posed as a ride share driver and sexually assaulted a woman. the victim says that she had called for a car near highway 92 and the attacker stopped and told her he was the driver. once she got in, he drove to a secluded location and attacked her.

the victim was able to escape with the help of a passerby who saw the assault happening. this is a sketch of the suspect. we don't know which ride share company the victim called. and the man charged with crashing into a chp officer and another driver killing them both is out on bail. officers believe shaun walker was driving recklessly, speeding, and distracted by his phone. the crash killed a motorcycle office and a driver. the driver was driving an suv when the officer pulled him over on i-80. that's when officers say the pickup truck veered off the highway and hit both of them. they call the crash entirely preventable. the officer was 47 years old, a 19 year veteran of the cph and leaves behind a wife and three children. the man was 49 and leaf leaves -- leaves behind a wife and

residents are required to bring trash. the latest effort to clean up the streets of oakland. >> reporter: the mayor just announced three bulky block parties hoping to stop people who might choose to trash oakland. illegal dumping is a problem if oakland. piles of everything from mattresses to old tires left along the streets. this braisen act was captured on video on june on east 17th street. a trail of construction debris left in the dust. >> the amount of illegal dumping that takes place in the streets and in the neighborhoods is absolutely ridiculous. >> reporter: requests to pick up trash piles in oakland doubled oifr the decade -- over th12-ecade. person litter enforcement team on the streetings this fall. -- streets this fall.

our public has clean streets. >> reporter: today, the mayor is announcing three public events called bulky block parties trying to call attention to a service that exists. residents can call waste management to have the bulky waste picked up. she calls the parties an experiment. >> we're going to have food trucks and music. there will be lines and we want to be clear this is for oakland residents only. >> reporter: if you report someone for illegal dumping in oakland and they're caught, you get part of the fine. just call 311. >> the three block parties to drop off the trash for free are the following dates. august 25th on edge water drive. september 15th on victory court. and september 29th on engineer road at wake avenue. each event is 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 in the afternoon.

right now, competitors from taking over lake merit to try and row to first place. the rowing masters championships are underway and more than 1600 athletes are expected to compete. it's the first time the championship landed a spot in oakland. >> have that, it creates the festival feel. we're competing with the rest of the city for space. it's kind of a fun challenge to everybody come and brings the community out. >> if you can't check it out today, it's free and continues through sunday. a boston couple made a real splash with their dance moves. watch. watch, watch. and away they go. a couple got too close to the rope and tumbled in the water and quickly got back out. and nobody was hurt. and what song? of course, foot loose.

and it's august, tomato time. there's many varieties to choose from. this is one of my favorites. selection and storage is important. aren't these beautiful? nice and red like this. very important. . stem nice and green. they pull the nutrients from the stem. and free from any yellowing whatsoever. when you bring them home, on the counter. not the refrigerator. eny them what i like to do also is take them in whole, pick off the stem, put them in a bowl and a small mozzarella ball. olive bowl, mint, salt and pepper, and there you go. that's it. it's a salad in a bowl. delicious. i'm tony tantillo your fresh grocer. and always remember to eat fresh and stay healthy.
