but this time president trump's daughter-in-law is crying foul. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. tributes continue to pour in for aretha franklin. the queen of soul died yesterday following a long battle with cancer. her influential career is being celebrated by fans and peers. former president barack obama said in a statement that franklin helped define the american experience. in her voice, we culd feel our history, all of it and in every shade. our power and our pain, our darkness and our light. last night at new york's apolo theater, franklin's name was on the marquee as fans gathered to

listen to her music. kenneth craig has more. >> reporter: news of aretha franklin's passing sent her 30 greatest hits to the top of the awards. it was those hits that earned her 18 grammy awards and cemented her legacy in the american songbook. over the course of more than five decades, she performed at inaugural events for three presidents, sang for the pope when he visited the u.s., and in 2015, franklin brought president obama to tears during the kennedy center honors. thursday the rock and roll hall of fame honored their first female inductee saying she defined soul music. diana ross spoke of her golden spirit. paul mccartney called her the queen of our souls who inspired us all. sam moore, the original soul man and her friend of 60 years remembered the first time he head her sing. >> i went to the service to hear

martin luther king, and she sang, i believe -- i think it was "precious lord." a 15-year-old, and i went, oh, my god. >> reporter: fans promised to say a little prayer for franklin at her hollywood star. they paid their respects at the church she grew up singing in detroit and in harlem, they reflected on her impact. >> i grew up with aretha franklin, are you kidding? with mom singing. we cleaning the house on the weekend and she was playing aretha franklin. >> reporter: fans promise they'll keep playing her favorite hits and keep her memory alive. kenneth craig, cbs news, new york. well, ahead on "cbs this morning," singer stevie wonder tells us about his close relationship with aretha franklin and shares some of his favorite memories.

in colorado, christopher watts is being held without bail on suspicion of killing his wife and two young daughters. shanann's body was discovered where her husband worked with what's believed to be her two young children nearby. he'll be charged tuesday. john schiumo has more. good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. he will be charged soon with three counts of murder and three counts of tampering with evidence. this is truly a disturbing crime that has saddened and angered people across the country. investigators in colorado say the bodies of shanann and her two daughrsutely possible outcome that any of us could imagine, and i think our hearts are broken for the town of frederick. >> reporter: a post on the town's facebook page say the bodies of her daughters were

found in the same area as their mother's body, at an oil and gas field where her husband christopher watts works. the 33-year-old ignored reporters' questions on thursday as he walked into a court hearing. >> i will tell you that at this point the court is not authorized any bail. >> reporter: watts was arrested on suspicion of killing his family. prosecutors believe he murdered them in their home. >> mommy has a baby in her belly. >> reporter: shanann was 15 weeks' pregnant. her husband was not shy about answering reporters' questions earlier in the week. >> if somebody has her, please bring her back. >> reporter: friends and neighbors are trying to find answers. >> those two little girls are so innocent and so sweet. i don't understand how you can do this to your family. >> reporter: formal charges will be filed against watts next week. the judge told the prosecutor to file those charges by monday.

he set a tuesday hearing to review those charges. anne-marie, neighbors are holding a candlelight vigil outside the home tonight. >> john schiumo here in new york. thank you so much, john. president trump's daughter-in-law says the latest tape released by omarosa manigault-newman is a fraud because small amounts were played. in it she officers omarosa a no-show job on the president's re-election campaign. >> i think we can work something out where we keep you right along those lines. specifically i haven't added up the number, but we were talking about like 15k a month. >> she can also be heard talking about the need to keep potentially damaging information quiet. omarosa said she offered her a job before her gross violation of ethics was known, and the discussion took place over

numerous phone calls over several weeks. >> the jury deliberations on the manafort case continues. the jury got the case yesterday and had four questions for the judge. they included defining reasonable doubt. the judge told them it does not require proof beyond all doubt. the jury is considering 18 counts. the first is on an alleged false tax return filed in 2010. that veterans day military parade ordered by president trump won't be happening this year. the president said the military and the white house have agreed to explore opportunities next year. that followed reports that the parade would cost about $92 million. that's more than three times the price originally suggested by the trump administration. late yesterday defense secretary jim mattis said whoever leaked the $92 million number was probably smoking something. the vatican responded in uncharacteristically strong

language to a report by the grand jury outlining decades of abuse by catholic priests. the povatican assured victims t pope was on their side. nikki battiste has that report. >> reporter: vatican spokesman greg burke made this statement. >> we can express our feelings about these horrible crimes in two words. those are shame and sorrow. the abuses described in the report are criminal. they're morally reprehensible. >> reporter: the statements are in response to two decades of claims. they uncovered decades of sexual abuse by over 300 clergy members preying on more than 1,000 minors. a statement from the attorney general's office says it revealed a systematic coverup spanning decades. still, the vatican added this. >> the holy father wants to put the victims first, make sure they know he is on their side.

newly released video by california fire officials shows a rarely seen fire tornado. it was seen last month. the tornado had a 1,000-foot base, the size of three football fields. winds grew to more than 160 miles per hour. peak temperatures rose to 2700 degrees. the tornado described as the most intense in california history trapped and killed a firefighter. the carr fire has burned more than 215,000 acres. well, medical students at nyu are getting a free ride, and a reported chinese training mission. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the "south china morning post" says a pentagon report claims chinese bombers are training to strike u.s. targets in the pacific. the annual report released to congress yesterday says china has rapidly expanded its

over-water bomber operation areas. it is likely training for strikes against u.s. and allied military bases in the western pacific ocean including guam. "business insider" reports a tesla whistle-blower says the tesla electric car security team is staffed with former members of a notorious group from uber that allegedly spies. they filed a whistle-blower tip with the s.e.c. he claims the new head of security led a team of former cia case officers at uber. at tesla, they allegedly spied on employees' cellphone conversations and hushed up a drug trafficking investigation. the albuquerque general reports new mexico medical investigators confirm the remains of a child found at a makeshift compound are from the missing boy from georgia. the body was found of abdul-gh-

was found in a nearby tunnel. the father and four other adults were arrested at the compound on suspicion of child abuse. authorities found 11 children living there in filth. "time" has a far-reaching interview with serena williams where she opens up about a lot of topics including struggling for time to spend with her daughter as well as her career. she didn't think she would be so attached to her daughter olympia and said at times it was difficult to leave her. she also said she breast fed for 18 months even though it was harder to get back in shape. whelp it com doesn't end here. and "the new york times" announced new york university would cover all costs.

out of the water! out of the water! another shark sighting off cape cod, massachusetts. a video caught a shark'ding a seal very close to shore. it came one day after a shark bit a swimmer less than ten miles away. that was the first shark attack on a human since 2012. on the "cbs moneywatch," walmart gets a boost, and self-driving cars are delivering groceries. wendy gillette is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, wendy. >> good morning, anne-marie. stocks on wall street jumped on news that china and the u.s. will hold trade talks next week, their first since june. but white house economic provider larry kudlow warned beijing not to underestimate president trump's resolve to push for changes in china's trade policies.

the dow jones industrial gained 396 points, the s&p 500 climbed 22 points, and the nasdaq composite finished 32 points higher. shares of walmart rose amid its strongest sales growth in more than a decade. walmart boosted its online sales by 40% last quarter and is benefitting from a stronger job market and stronger consumer confidence. home depot, macy's, and nordstrom all raised their forecast this week. a generic version of the emergency allergy medicine of the epipen has been approved by the fda. two years ago epipen maker mylan was berated by congress for hiking the price by more than 500%. so far no hike on the generic version, which will be sold by teva. and kroger is testing self-driving cars for delivery.

a fan paid a hefty price for running onto the field in green bay last night during a preseason game between the packers and pittsburgh steelers. the fan tried a few moves before being surrounded by police and security, and, of course, he was arrested. in italy now, they're searching through the ruins of the deadly bridge collapse looking for more victims. this morning a small fire broke out at one of the businesses near the collapse. it was quickly put out. dust rose from the rubble earlier when crews brought down portions of the collapsed bridge. the bridge toppled onto several warehouses and buildings on tuesday, killing at least 38 people. and 72 years after a u.s. military transport plane crash landed in switzerland, the wreckage has been uncovered. a heat wave melted the glacier hiding the wreckage, exposing the remains. the plan has crashed in a snowstorm.

christopher watts has not been formally charged yet. he's due back in court on tuesday. studies show more women are living with met static cancer and it has spread. they're living longer. meg oliver has the story. >> reporter: morgan mitchell and her fiance hit the gym five days a week. she has four marathons under her belt, hits the gym and works. she does all of this with breast cancer. that i'm 29 and had no family history to my knowledge. >> and then you got tested and had the gene. >> yes, i had the gene. >> on the same day he proposed to her, she discovered a lump in her best and she had the shocking news it spread to her liver. the doctor suggested she enroll in a new clinical trial for metastatic breast cancer patients. it combines four different targeted drugs to try to stop cancer cells from growing and
