front of a judge today for the first time. jackie ward is in the newsroom with the latest on the court proceedings. >> reporter: 24-year-old cristhian rivera, an undocumented immigrant from mexico who has been living in iowa for seven years saw a judge for the first time this afternoon. he faces a first-degree murder charge. if convicted, he faces life in prison without parole. >> cristhian rivera walked into an iowa courtroom this afternoon with his head down. his attorney is requesting a private hearing and accusing the media of only telling one side of the story. despite his client confessing to police that he killed mollie tibbets. >> in this particular case, the coverage y. in fact, the government has weighed in at the highest levels of a predisposition that this young man is guilty. >> that request was denied. yesterday, the search for the

20-year-old university of iowa student ended in a cornfield off of this dirt road 12 miles from where she went missing july 18th. >> a body was discovered early this morning. we believe it to be the body of mollie tibbets. >> the big break came more than a week ago when investigators obtain surveillance video of mollie tibbets jogging and they noticed a black chevy malibu following her. police traced the car to cristhian rivera and brought him in for questioning monday. >> he sees that he -- he says that he sees mollbbets tibbets running. he says he chased her down. at some point in time, he says he blacked out. >> in an affidavit, police say cristhian rivera said when he came to, he found the body in his trunk and noticed blood on the side of her head. he says he dragged her to a secluded location in a cornfield and then after the interview, police that he guided them to her location from memory. >> police are not saying whether they knew each other.

cristhian rivera worked at a dairy farm. the farm says he passed all government screenings that made him eligible to work. the family of mollie tibbets released a statement saying "on behalf of the entire family, we thank all of those from around the world who have sent thoughts and prayers for our girl. we know many of you will join us as we continue to carry her in our hearts forever. ." the next time cristhian rivera will face a judge is august 31st for a preliminary hearing. jackie ward, kpix5. some good news for hawaii this afternoon. powerful hurricane lane has been downgraded to a category four. some residents are still stocking up just in case it gets worse. in the bay area, travelers are on their way to hawaii from oakville and say they are not too worried about the storm were ruining -- storm ruining their vacation. >> i am not super concerned.

it should be fine. >> over in sfo, a different story. one family says they are not taking any chances. >> i have already been in a hurricane at sandy, in new york. i don't want to repeat that. i don't care if i am losing money but i am not going through it. >> it is not clear if hawaiian airlines will change their flight. let's get to emily turner who is tracking this storm. she says it is no joke. >> it is not a joke. it has been downgraded from a five, to a four. but it is something to take very seriously. we are keeping a close eye on this storm in the pacific. about 300 or so miles away from the state itself. look at all of this. there is so much to be concerned about. 155-mile an hour sustained wind. and 190-mile an hour for wind gusts. everywhere that you see red is a hurricane warning. what you are looking at is the cone of uncertainty.

the good news we are looking at here is that the storm gets downgraded as it gets closer to the state. meaning it will get more weak. we are hoping it will continue this trend which means less damage and less reason to be concerned for hawaii. certainly something you want to keep an eye on. it will be just off the coast friday at 2:00 in the morning. we will be keeping a close watch on that in the weather center and we will be bringing you updates as we get them. president trump made his first direct comments about his former lawyer michael cohen. cohen accepted a plea deal and said under oath that the president told him to break the law. angelica alvarez reports from the white house. >> reporter: for more than a decade, michael cohen was president trump's former lawyer and fixer. but on wednesday, mr. trump expressed " an is looking for a good lawyer, i would pled to tax evasion and campaign- e to make hush

house for over 30 hours.. eyewitnesses say the dog, named luna, got stuck.. after chasing a rabbit under the home.. responders had to dig carefully . colorado firefighters rescued a dog that was trapped under a house for more than 30 hours. eyewitnesses say the dog t appeed unjured. she was sent to the vet to be hecked out as a precaution.
