it's it's friday, august 24th, 2018, this is the cbs morning news. hurricane lane is lashing the hawaiian islands with heavy rain, high surf and powerful winds. we're tracking the storm's path. jeff sessions strikes back. the u.s. attorney general ramps up the war of words with president trump about where his loyalties lie. but will sessions be fired for speaking up. >> a safe full of secrets.

the national enquirer why are we hearing about this now? good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquaters here in new york. good to be with you, i'm anne-marie green. dangerous hurricane lane is pounding the hawaiian islands this morning. it remains a category 3 hurricane with sustained winds. it is still causing damage and lots of it from wind, floods and mud slides. up to 30 inches of rain has -- could fall in some areas. laura, good morning. >> good morning. this morning we have seen live video showing overflowing rivers and flooded streets. we heard reports of tourists being rescued from their rental homes and the famous wakiki beach has been evacuated. crews are using sandbags to try

to create a wall between the ocean front hotels and the rising surf. >> as hurricane lane churned toward hawaii a state of emergency was declared across the state. on the big island, 2 feet of rain had fallen in 24 hours and the slow moving storm was still far offshore. rivers and lakes were inundated and overflow their banks. one resident hoped this would be the worst of it. >> i've seen it get pretty raging before. i still feel we'll be blessed and okay. >> they said it had the potential to be catastrophic. >> we're extremely concerned about the potentials for inland flooding, landslides occurring and damage to the transportation and communications infrastructure. >> once a category 5 monster it's already been downgraded a

bit and is expected to further weaken in the days to come although it will still pack hurricane strength winds. it's also not expected to strike the islands directly. unlike people on the mainland, most hawaiians have no choice but to stay where they are and ride the storm out. >> we're on an island. we really are. it makes me feel for the people that live here. >> residents have been urged to stock pile two weeks worth of food, water and medicine. >> the last major storm to hit hawaii was in 1992. it caused $3 billion in damage. >> laura, thanks a lot. well, paul from our san francisco station kpix is tracking hurricane lane. >> there are two major headlines with hurricane lane this morning. headline number one is that land

fall is now not likely. it will not make land fall on one of the islands but headline number two is tremendous amounts of rainfall will continue to impact the islands all day long today and likely into the weekend. the latest update on hurricane lane, it's still a category 3 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 120 miles per hour with stronger gusts. let's watch this track. it's very interesting. it's almost going due north right now and literally is forecast to make a left turn before making it to honolulu. that westerly turn will also weaken the storm and it will likely make its closest pass to honolulu as a category 1 or category 2 hurricane late friday night or early saturday morning. sustained winds, 30 to 50 miles per hour with higher gusts and widespread flooding is likely. some rainfall totals could reach as high as 30 inches. that's the latest on hurricane lane. >> well, ahead on cbs this morning, we'll have the latest on how the hurricane is impacting hawaii.

now to the escalating feud between president trump and jeff sessions. for the most part sessions held his tongue following trump's repeated criticism. but not anymore. sessions is firing back. >> jeff sessions never took control of the justice department, and it's sort of an incredible thing. >> president trump was blunt and bold on fox news once again blasting attorney general jeff sessions. >> the only reason i gave him the job. i felt loyalty. he was an original supporter. >> but the president made clear that loyalty dissolved during this moment in march of 2017. >> i have recused myself. >> he bowed out of the russia investigation. said i'm going to recuse myself.

i said what kind of a man is this. >> sessions fired back. i took control of the department of justice the day i was sworn in, adding the doj will not be properly influenced by considerations. president trump criticizes him on twitter but will stop short of saying he plans to fire sessions. republican senator lindsey graham. >> i think there will come a time sooner rather than later where it will be time to have a fresh voice at the department of justice. >> the special counsels investigation is intensifying with the conviction of ex-trump campaign chairman paul manafort. on the same day, his former pern cohen, pleaded guilty to campaign-related charges. the pair of legal bombshells triggered fresh speculation about impeachment hearings if democrats take back the house. >> i don't know how you can impeach somebody that's done a great job. i tell you what, if i ever got

impeached, i think the market would crash. everybody would be very poor. >> president trump's personal lawyer said if the president was impeached the american people would revolt. cbs news, the white house. >> those campaign-related charges that the president's former lawyer, michael cohen, pleaded guilty to involved illegal campaign contributions made to two women that said they had an affair with donald trump. they reached a deal. pecker is also a long time friend of the president. he and the national enquirer kept documents in a safe along with other damaging stories it didn't publish. in return for not publishing the stories they expected favors uncan hu and his wife pleaded not guilty for charges they used campaign money for personal expenses.

the republican lawmaker was in a san diego court yesterday where his bail was set at $15,000. it was 10,000 for his wife. the indictment charge is that they used $250,000 in campaign funds to finance a lavish lifestyle and then attempted to conceal the spending. the woman accused of leaking a report on hacking in the 2016 election has been sentenced to more than five years in prison. she was charged with copying a classified report. her 63 month sentence is the longest ever given for a federal crime involving leaks to the media. funeral services will be held for mollie tibbetts this sunday. she disappeared while jogging last month. she was stabbed to death. christian rivera, an

he died in nashville yesterday and he was 68 years old. >> john lennon's assassin will remain behind bars for now and could miss america be dethroned? the new yorker magazine reports on a document circulating last year accusing former obama officials of conspiring to undermine the administration. the document is titled the echo chamber. president trump's advisers the allegations. former deputy national security adviser ben rhodes called them bizarre. the man accused of killing a high school honors student in 2013 is guilty of first-degree murder. a jury convicted him of shooting her in the back.

he was 18 at the time. he claimed he was aiming at rival gang members in a park. he was gunned down days after performing as a majorette with her high school band at president obama's second inauguration. former first lady michelle obama attended her funeral. >> the man that killed john lennon has been denied parole for a tenth time. the new york state parole board said the release of 63-year-old mark david chapman would be incompatible with the welfare and safety of society. he shot and killed lennon in 1980 in new york city as he was returning home with his wife. chapman is eligible for parole again in two years. usa today reports on the ongoing war of words between miss america cara mund and former miss america and fox news anchor gretchen carlson. it's possible she will fire her after doing a tv interview yesterday. she released a letter criticizing the group's leadership. she also claims carlson and

>> don't do it. come here. come on. >> ft. worth police released dramatic video of officers trying to talk a woman from jumping off of a 150 foot highway overpass. the woman in her mid 20s suffers from depression. after a tense 80 seconds the officers brought her down to safety. she was taken to a hospital and is said to be recovering. the national suicide prevention hotline is open 24 hours for anyone that needs help. >> on the cbs money watch now the world central bankers need to weigh in on the threats to the global economy and attention shoppers, the nations biggest grocery store chain phasing out. wendy gillette is at the new york stock exchange and more with that. >> good morning, today fed chairman jerome powell speaks to a gathering of central bankers around the world at a meeting in jackson hole wyoming. investors will be listening to

what he says about the threat president trump's tariffs pose to global markets and the possibility of interest rate hikes. stocks were mixed yesterday. dow split 76 points and s&p 500 lost five and nasdaq, 10. they're asking to obtain effects on a tariff on chinese exports. they set up a petition signed by 20,000 since people monday. tariffs that target chinese imports including fabrics, fleece, and yarn. general mills agreed to stop calling the oats 100% natural to settle a lawsuit. three consumer groups claim they contain small amounts of the pesticide known as round up. the amount is below the maximum recommended by the environmental protection agency but the groups maintain the labels are deceptive.

general mills says it's confident in the accuracy of its labels and settled the lawsuit to avoid the cost and distraction of litigation. the nation's largest grocery chain says it plans to phase out the use of plastic bags by 2025. kroger says it's customers expressed concerns about the impact of plastic bags on the environment. the chain orders about 6 billion bags each year for its stores in 35 states and the district of columbia. brown paper bags will be available for free and they will be able to buy reusable bags for 1 to $2. what's believed to be the first craft beer hotel opens in ohio this week. the dog house opens in columbus with 32 rooms. some overlook the brew dog brewery. it will offer craft beer spa treatments including a hot tub filled with brew dogs ipa. each room has a fridge stocked

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. it is a frightening journey for a blind rower and his rowing partner. they're taking part in a grueling 24 mile adventure from monterey, california to hawaii. they have been at sea for 78 days. he hopes to become the first blind person to row across the

pacific ocean and if that's not tough enough they're rowing through rough seas because of hurricane lane. we spoke to sparks via satellite phone. >> the waves become much, much larger. we're going to deploy the sea anchor and hold on. there's not a lot we can do really now. >> sparks is a 57-year-old former marine that lost his eyesight in a diving accident in his 20s. ey'll ride out the storm inside their 3 by 7 foot cabin. >> a colorado hotel had an uninvited guest this week. a black bear was roaming around the lobby of the hotel. the hotel manager said i was only inside for a brief time and there were no guests around. he said that the bear actually seemed to be afraid of humans so they were able to shoo it away. that is good. why scientists are calling an ancient bone fragment belonging to a 13-year-old girl, the first solid evidence of interbreeding between ancient humans.

our top story this morning, the strongest storm to hit the our top story this morning, the strongest storm to hit the hawaiian islands since 1992 remains offshore but it's dumping buckets full of rain on islanders all over. some damage is extensive with them already receiving a foot and a half of rain. jeff sessions says the justice department will not be improperly influenced by considerations. he fired back to the latest influence by president trump. he accused him of failing to take control of the justice department and said he only gave sessions the job out of loyalty.
