flooding and landslides. air quality has been dubbed unhealthy now. it is thanks to smoke from the wildfires in northern california. even as far away as british columbia. thank you for joining us >> let's take a live look from our dublin camera. you can see in the shot all of that haze in the sky. dublin unified school district says kids will be kept inside today and the windows and doors will be closed because of the unhealthy air. the bay area air quality management district has again issued an air alert for today. >> we see gray conditions because of that haze. we had the early-morning marine layer. we are still seeing clouds, but this is the view from the mount hamilton camera towards the west. you can barely see those rolling hills that we usually get a clear view of. here is the view from oakland. you cannot see downtown san francisco. normally we get a decent view of the city and the skyline, but this is pretty nasty.

that is why that air alert has been issued. visibility is low six in hayward, six in concorde. six mile visibility. so, the haze will linger throughout the day today. air quality forecast in the moderate range for the north bay. the rest of us is unhealthy, especially for kids and seniors and those with respiratory problems. look at all these fires. like you mentioned, the british columbia fires have worked its way all the way down. initially the smoke was over the ocean, and then a breeze picked up. that is what is sending it to us. our particulate matter, not very good. it is around 105-110. yesterday it was over 150. so, that put us worse yesterday. it is improving slightly and into the weekenimprovement. hurricane lane is bringing strong winds and heavy rain to hawaii. this video showing flooding on the big island.

up to 2 feet of rain atnd. ergency crews had to rescue five tourists from a home they were renting in hilo after a nearby gulch overflowed. >> also, a fast flooding waterfall. it is engulfing the islands. roads are closed because of the flash floods and a state of emergency has been issued for the entire island chain. >> hurricane lane is still dangerous, so we are asking all of our residents statewide to pay attention, listen to the updates. >> more rain is still to come as hurricane lane moves through the pacific at just six miles per hour. residents are bracing for the storm. you can see two people swimming here and nearby you could also see a shed and tent that has been flooded along with a submerged car. tourists are taking precautions.

>> we are scared because we have never experienced a hurricane. >> we are staying at the marriott, they already put sandbags in certain places to prevent the water from coming in. >> they told us that we have to stay in the room, probably the bathroom, not go near the window. >> meanwhile, at the airports united airlines canceled all flights to and from the island today. hawaiian airlines canceled 8 flights to and from a wahoo. it is having an impact on ocean travel. at least one cargo ship that left oakland is parked in the pacific waiting for the storm to pass. stay with us as hurricane lane hits the island. you can track the storm on our website, kpix.com. a bit of a scare four passengers on a united airlines plane that took off from sfo. the flight was cut short after a run-in with some birds. >> reporter: almost immediately upon takeoff this plane flew

straight into a flock of birds. that caused damage to the plane and forcing it to turn around and head right back to sfo. a passenger took this photo of the nose of the united landed about 1:30 this morning. >> they are actually washing the blood off the windows. >> it was about an hour into the flight when the pilot made the announcement that they were not going to singapore. >> something was failing on the plane, so we had to go back. >> they mentioned that the engines could be involved. >> reporter: here's a look at the path they took, dumping fuel in case of a crash landing as they headed back to sfo, where it taxied to the gate on its own after an hour and 20 minute flight. >> everything is fine. >> the mood was not that of an emergency flight. it was handled pretty well. >> reporter: united has not said what kind of damage may have been done to the plane, no

one was injured in passengers were booked on other flights. kpix 5. the faa requires all usa airports to have a wildlife mitigation program and sfo includes safety officers to patrol the runways and habitat modification. now to a situation out of richmond. police are investigating a chase that turned deadly after a suspect crashed into a semi truck. officers shutdown the intersection of richmond and san pablo. investigators say it started when the suspect through a gun out of the car. deputies saw and chased after the suspects. speeds breaking 100 miles per hour at one point during the chase. the suspect ran a red light and drove into and then under the truck. one of the suspects in that car is dead. the other was uninjured and taken into custody. verizon says they have removed all data speed cap restrictions for first

responders. that was after they were called out by the fire department. the company came under fire for throttling internet service to firefighters battling the casino complex fire, the largest in state history. verizon claims it was a mistake. that were removed yesterday and include hawaii where emergency crews are rescuing people from areas flooded by hurricane lane. lawmakers are holding a hearing at the state capital about internet speed restrictions during the wildfire in just about 30 minutes. we will bring you updates from that hearing. after a long battle to keep st. louis hospital open in the mission district, the facility has been transformed into sutter health's new campus. kpix 5's emily turner got a sneak peak. >> reporter: it is a new hospital in southeast san francisco. it is a day to celebrate, but this project did not come without its hurdles. this is the quietest these calls will ever be. tomorrow, sutter health opens their campus. >> it is said that it is a reflection on our society, how

[ applause ] >> reporter: today's ribbon- cutting, officially christened the $600 million campus that replaces the st. luke's hospital. the facility carries the long- standing tradition of st. luke's in maternity care. >> so many patients have come to the women's center work were born at st. luke's. now we will see new generations of women. often in the labor room there is the grandmother, daughter, and the baby. we honor that and want to continue the legacy. >> it makes the emergency department a priority. >> the project did not make -- come without its hurdles. it took 18 years and debate for the community to come to a consensus. but, now in less than 22 hours, southeast communities of san francisco will have a new place for medical care. >> this hospital, although we thought it would be lost, it is

here to stay for this community. and i'm so happy about all of the benefits that it will continue to provide for generations to come. the new hospital opens tomorrow. it is located on cesar chavez. john mccain has decided to discontinue medical treatment for brain cancer. in a statement from his family they going to think caregiver, friends and associates. senator mccain was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer last year. the senator's wife, cindy mccain tweeted saying i love my husband with all my heart. god bless everyone who has cared for my husband along this journey. mccain ran for president in 2008 and has long been a leader in the republican party. documents from the guilty plea of umrm pers erl con , are being released. one indicates that david packer , the ceo of the inquirer

s- forestry service. thousands of pounds of trash and numerous c chemicals were federal narcotics agents destroyed 1.4 million marijuana plants last year according to the forestry service thousands of pounds of trash and toxic chemicals were also taken out. >> john blackstone joined agents in southern california as they tried to crack down on the illegal and dangerous growing operation. >> reporter: it is so rugged in the san bernardino national forest that federal agents searching for marijuana are sometimes lifted from place to place by helicopter. >> we have a marijuana garden down here with an unknown number of plants and as of right now an unknown number of suspects. >> the us forest is overseeing this operation. armed officers from the forest service and the california department of fish and wildlife go in first. >> we found another plot. >> heads up, okay? >> reporter: when they determine it is safe, at least relatively safe -- >> there is always a chance for

poison oak, rattlesnakes -- >> reporter: they let us follow. these are the conditions they have to search through to find these marijuana grows. what they found here is about 50 pounds of marijuana cut and ready to be taken out of the forest. >> we did not catch the cultivators, but we did catch there crop. >> reporter: is a big crop. >> at least 5000 plants. >> reporter: plants left behind are hard to eradicate. the marijuana plants are growing beneath the trees here, hard to see from the air in this rugged and remote territory. but 5000 are scattered about five acres of this national forest. >> all of it fed by a somewhat sophisticated irrigation system. this is a makeshift reservoir that the criminals growing the marijuana have created. they are diverting water from a nearby stream into here. the problem almost isn't so much the marijuana as it is the damage that they're doing to

the forest. >> the environmental damage is huge. >> reporter: in a way, operations like this are less a war on drugs, and more a battle to protect the environment. the growers have done more damage cutting down all this vegetation to plant the marijuana. but, then down here enforcement team found what they feared -- this is a band pesticide in the united states. that has turned this area into a toxic waste dump. >> even a small amount of the pesticide can kill wildlife and further denigrate this area that includes a campsite filled with trash. it is the kind of damage done by illegal marijuana cultivation on public lands throughout the west. on average 400 marijuana growing sites are found in national forests each year. >> for all the ones we find, there are probably 2-3 more that we didn't. >> reporter: you can grow this legally in california. why does somebody come and do

different jobs in a single year. >> i always say that i am proficient in microsoft excel, and i cannot -- i can hardly open it. >> people are trying to stand out and get the attention of employers right now, unfortunately, thee membed fore wrg reasons instead. it only lies, also mistakes that could stop you from getting a job, like typos and bad grammar. of course, unprofessional email addresses. >> it is good to tell the truth. just remember that. we are still on storm watch for hawaii. hurricane lane has been downgraded to a hurricane -- category two. they are dropping torrential rains flooding low-lying areas and creating landslides in some parts of the big island. they received 20 inches of rain in 24 hours. we have been tracking the storm all day. >> we have some very impressive rain total so far. i want to show you the beach right now. yesterday, at this time we showed you the view. there was a lot of people in the water waiting to catch

those waves before the hurricane actually hit. now, lookãthere are a few in there. 5-6 people catching waves. the watercolor has changed. there is a lot of rain water now that has worked his way into the ocean along with mud. that is associated with the heavy flooding and mudslides. it is a category two, but that does not mean they are out of the woods. they are definitely dealing with wind gusts, 130 miles per hour sustained winds. it is now 170 miles south of honolulu and moving north at only 2 miles per hour. this morning it was only moving at five. this thing is stubborn and it is staying put. when it moves the slow it means that it will continue to duckã dump more and more rain over the islands. the big island getting a big lips is a bit of a break. those other islands, that is worldly rain is coming down. it will downgrade overnight to a category one. but then by tomorrow and into sunday it should eventually turn into a tropical storm, and work its way out towards the

west. so, what we are noticing, a few of these plots are showing that the eye of the storm may not make landfall at all. it was showing earlier that it could. it looks like it is going to stay to the south, but it does not really matter where the eye of the storm goes. what does matter is all of this right here. that is a lot of moisture that these hawaiian islands will be pelted with for the next at least 48-72 hours. so, saturday, sunday, look at all that rain that is expected to come down. let's take you back here to home. this is the view from oakland, where is san francisco? usually it is right there. hazy right now, 62 in san francisco. oakland is at 63, concorde 70. at least it is not too hot. we are not talking about the heat in the haze. but, what we are seeing is not going to be good for the lungs. air quality is in the moderate or unhealthy a west wind pushing in that smoke that has moved over the pacific ocean into our region. it is not too strong at the moment, which is kind of causing that stagnant air

the start of school to nthan 8 su a bill that would delay the start time of schools across the state is getting some steam. supporters say students would be less sleep deprived as a result, but the california teachers association says the bill takes away local control. a similar piece of legislation was shot down last year. >> state lawmakers have passed a bill aiming to reduce waste from plastic straws. under this bill restaurants would not be allowed to give out plastic straws unless a customer asks for one. governor brown will have until the end of next month to decide whether to sign it into law. we will be right back after this.
