republican nominee for president back in 2008. he has been suffering from a malignant brain tumor and just yesterday his family announced that he was stopping all treatment. he got the diagnosis more than a year ago and has been treating it with chemotherapy. he returned to the senate last summer to cast a dramatic thumbs down boat against his parties attempt to repeal the affordable care act. he died at the age of 81 in arizona. >> his wife said my heart is broken. i am so lucky to have lived the adventure of living this incredible man for 38 years. he passed away he lived, on his own terms and surrounded by the people he loved.>> president trump treated my deepest sympathies and respect go out to senator john mccain. >> house minority leader says in a statement that the nation is in tears today with the passing of john mccain.

congress and america have lost a leader and a public servant. not long ago, we saw this. a hearse carrying mccain's body left his families ranch in sedona. they were police escorts and a massive motorcade. it is making a 100 mile trip from his ranch to phoenix. chris martinez has a look back at mccain's remarkable life. >> history talking style one him respect, even if people did not agree with his politics. his war experience helped him win the republican presidential nomination and president bush's blessing. >> john showed incredible courage, strength of character, and perseverance. that is exactly what we need in a president.

>> the strength of character was shaped by military service and adversity. mccain's father and grandfather were both admirals and john followed them into the service. as a navy fighter pilot in 1967, mccain crashed and was captured by the vietnamese. during five years of captivity, his body was tortured. but they never broke his spirit. mccain later brought that same spirit to politics. his independence offered -- often angered members of his own party. mccain worked to strengthen the military. >> do not tell me what we can't do. don't tell me we can't make our country stronger in the world safer. we can. we must. >> after losing the presidential election to barack obama, mccain faced a difficult primary challenge in 2010. but he persevered and one.

>> i intend to go back to washington and i intend to go back to work. >> mccain is married twice and had seven children. his second wife was often by her husband side during his campaign appearances and his battles with cancer. he was first diagnosed with melanoma in 1983. then in july 2017, doctors found a brain tumor. he made a triumphant return to the senate and cast a deciding vote on healthcare. his dedication to family and country and has courage let him to admiration worldwide. to his many fans, mccain was a real hero. >> you can find much more on the death of senator mccain on kpix.com. we will have more coming up. in other news, a dui investigation tonight after a tesla that may have been in self driving mode slammed into the back of a fire truck.

the crash happened around 1 am in san jose. firefighters had just shown up to a crash when they say a block tesla rammed right into one of their parked fire engines. no firefighters were injured, but we saw the driver on a stretcher. an officer appeared to be giving him a sobriety test. the driver and the passenger were transferred to the hospital. in a tweet, san jose firefighters say it is the second time in recent months that a tesla has rear-ended one of their firetrucks. they also say the tesla was reportedly in auto mode. the auto braking system was not engaged. the company says tesla has not yet received any data from the car, but we are working to establish the facts of the incident. a san francisco woman was hurt by a bizarre attack. the falcon flew into an open window and ended up slamming into a wall, which put the bird

into a daze. a woman inside the apartment picked it up and posed for photos with it. then, the falcon came to life and became agitated it would later become infected. >> this bird went inside my house. i am in a lot of pain. >> it is being treated. the campus, which just opened, the woman is one of the hospitals first patients. >> the district is scrapping 10 sport. we are wondering who was affected the most. >> the benefits are boundless.

out onto the court. >> we are doing everything we can to keep those cuts away from the court. the district will look for companies to donate money to bring those programs back. the state is pouring millions of dollars into the dmv to help speed up those long wait times. we went to the concorde office today to see if additional funding is making any difference. >>reporter: it is not the most pleasant way to spend your day off, but the people here are not complaining.>> everything is moving really fast and organized. i am happy. >> i work full-time, i work in san francisco. it's hard to get to the dmv

during the day. >>reporter: the saturday expansion is in response to glowing -- growing complaints about the wait times. concord is now among one of the 60 offices across the state with all services across driving tests. >> they took my picture and i came out. i came out the second time when they called me. this is the third time. >>reporter: that is an unusual problem, but each time she has been faced with the typical delays. >> last time, i had an appointment, but i still stood in line for 45 minutes. >>reporter: the agency blames it on federally mandated processes. they are in the process of hiring more workers to accommodate the millions of people who need upgrades in the next five years. most people today made good time in and out. but as always, it is an exercise in patient.
