headquaters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. critical primaries in florida and arizona set the stage for an intense show down in november. in florida the governor's race featured a shocking come from behind win for andrew gillum. if he wins the election he'll be the first black governor. desantis is backed by president trump. he tweeted his supports after the votes were counted. >> just after midnight the president also tweeted about the senate race in arizona as democrats look to take control of the house and senate in washington. each and every primary result is magnified. >> are you ready to paint florida blue. >> tallahassee major scored the

upset of the night when he won the democratic primary in florida's race for governor. >> i humbly accept the democratic nomination. >> the favorite of the progressive wing of the party governor. he's now facing ron desantis that credited president trump for his victory last night. >> i did have support from someone in washington. he lives in the white house with the pillars in front of it. >> i gave him a nice shot. a nice little tweet. bing bing. and he went from 3 to like 20 something. >> president trump also notched a victory with rick scott, the current florida governor won the republican primary for senate. he'll face bill nelson in one of the country's most hotly contested races. >> it's difficult to celebrate anything this week as we mourn the loss of senator mccain. >> it was also seen in arizona as the three gop candidates for

senate align themselves more with him than john mccain or jeff flake. >> i work closely with president trump. >> martha mcsally will face the democratic congresswoman. >> we're not done yet. still to come, contests in massachusetts, rhode island, and right here in new york. >> thank you so much. well, the sentencing phase in the trial of a former texas police officer convicted of murdering an unarmed black teenager will resume this morning. roy oliver was convicted yesterday in the death of 15-year-old jordan edwards. it's a rare guilty verdict in a police shooting case and oliver faces 5 to 99 years in prison. >> we are the jury unanimously find the defendant guilty of murder as charged in the indictment. >> moments after the verdict was read, hugs, tears and looks of disbelief as family and friends of jordan edwards got the justice they have been fighting

for. a conviction of former police officer roy oliver. >> i'm happy. very happy. it's been a long time. a hard year. >> footage from oliver's body cameralayed duringhe tal showing oliver and his partner responding to a loud house party in april of 2017. oliver exits the house when he hears gunshots outside and then fires five rounds from his rifle into a car of five unarmed teenage boys as they were driving away. edwards was in the passenger seat. he said he opened fire after seeing the car driving toward his partner. his partner said he never felt like he was in danger. jurors deliberated over two days before reaching the verdict. >> this case is not just about jordan. it's about walter scott, it's about ernest sterling and every

african american that's been killed and not gotten justice. >> jordan's father cried on the stand and his mother says the loss of their son altered their family forever. >> it's just trying to get through life without him now. >> the sentencing phase will be wednesday. cbs news dallas, texas. >> hurricane maria that slammed puerto rico will go down as one of the deadliest natural disasters in history. they raised the official death toll from 64 to nearly 3,000. that's based on a new independent study ordered by the governor. the winds hit nearly 160 miles per hour causing widespread devastation. it left much of the island without power for months and many of the victims died in the months following the storm. ioch

the pennsylvania attorney general repeated accusations on cbs this morning that the vatican was complicit. >>l nd j3 prator priesn e the catholic church. he spoke with cbs this morning. >> the priests would go and bishops would go lie to paritioners and law enforcement. >> if the prosecutor is referring to something outside the report we'll have to wait for that before commenting. the war of words comes after the former official claims pope francis was aware of sex abuse allegations against cardinal mccarrick. the former arch bishop that re-signed in july.

now the president of the u.s. conference of catholic bishops is asking for a prompt and thorough examination into how mccarrick's behavior was tolerated for so long. the first known lawsuit since the blistering grand jury report was filed. john hail began sexually abusing him when he was 7 years old. >> the church had information about these priests and covered it up. >> pennsylvania attorney general josh shapiro told me he has spoken with a dozen other attorneys general and the department of justice. his office has a victim hotline and they have received more than 700 calls since the report's release. cbs news, new york. >> well, millions of people in the northeast are bracing for anoto maine ratus expected

they had to call in a beekeeper. tourists were buzzed but kept their distance. they were released outside of manhattan. >> the trump administration is look at regulating google searches. the washington post reports the trump administration is looking at whether google search's should be regulated. president trump tweeted yesterday that search returns for trump news were rigged were him and others so that almost all stories and news is bad. white house economic adviser larry kudlow said the administration is looking at if and how google should be regulated by the government. google says it never ranks search results to manipulate political sentiment. the owner of a texas company

that makes untraceable 3d printed guns says he's selling the blueprints despite an order barring him from selling them online. he began selling the plans yesterday to customers that can pay whatever they want. he says he will send the files in the mail. the court order only applied to free downloads on his company's website. california governor jerry brown signed a bill making it the first state to eliminate cash bail for suspects awaiting trial. too many defendants remain in custody because they cannot afford to pay jail. the new law will allow county superior courts to decide which
