hello and thank you for joining us on mosaic. our guest today is father peter zhai and he is the director of chinese ministry. smack yes, i am the director of chinese ministry here, i've been doing that work for five years. >> and you live in the city ? >> yes, i live in sunset. >> and that is one of six or seven parishes that have chinese mask x >> yes. we have sunday mass, at 12.
5:34 am
every sunday. >> is your mass in cantonese or mandarin? >> i only speak mandarin, when i came here i learned cantonese and now i celebrate mass in cantonese. i preach in mandarin but i also learned how to preach a little bit in cantonese. >> your english is good and i've heard you preach. i haven't heard you preach in cantonese. what is the report? it works? >> yes, it works. elderly people do not understand mandarin so i speak to them in cantonese and they say it's much better. they can understand now. >> i think even we who serve -- live here no very little -- know very little about the chinese, we note that the original -- we know that the original immigrants were cantonese speakers but many
5:35 am
coming from the mainland speak mandarin. let me ask you about yourself, you are born in china? >> yes, the north central part of china, a province called inner mongolia. >> let me bring up the slide now. it should be a map of china. if you can see up in the yellow and the top. >> yes, that is where i was born, right in the middle of the yellow part. and northwest of beijing. >> and you grew up there, and you are born into a catholic family? >> yes, i was born into a catholic family, even though at the time the church was all closed and we did not have priests or anyone serving us. but my family held onto the faith and i was brought up as a true catholic. some training and
5:36 am
discovered your vocation as a priest by the aid of the divine word society? >> yes, from very young, because my mom is a very faithful catholic, she wanted us to be priests, i have six siblings and she educated us in that way. when i was very young, my mother already asked me to pray for my vocation, my late mother as she passed away my two years ago. that is where i got my vocation. i prayed for it. and when i grew up i had the opportunity to get to no some missionaries in china. so i joined the wide world of missionaries. >> i look at the website and i knew very little about them before meeting you but the divine word missionaries are a
5:37 am
very large organization with 4000 priests, 2000 brothers, they work and how many countries? >> 84 countries now. we continue to grow. a few years ago we were in 72 countries but we expanded to 12 more countries. so we consist of people from different countries, different nationalities, we are really, they say we are the only congregation that is growing in the catholic church. >> because many of them are aging and the members are not finding new members. >> yes. >> do you attribute the growth to the potency of your -- >> we have so many missionaries
5:38 am
and still many people are so interested in missionary work to bring the good news to others and to proclaim the gospel. so a lot of people want to join us. also we are very international, very inclusive. that is part of how we carry on. it is really attractive. >> i read that in your training, you get cross cultural training. >> yes. >> and you came and studied here in the united states? you got an advanced degree in theology in chicago ? >> yes. i studied, first of all when i came here i entered into the wide -- divine word college in iowa. i studied philosophy there for four years, and then after graduating i went to a catholic the eligible height of theological -- university.
5:39 am
>> would you say you are a missionary to us in california ? >> very much so. >> you serve the chinese community because you have a built-in expertise in that. i imagine your order could train you and send you to somewhere else. for instance the newest missions are in norway and burma. very widely different. >> yes. we are open to our church, in the society where we are needed. wherever there is a need we try to explore and send missionaries into the area to work with local churches or to work with people who live there. >> i read that your mission is particular to the poor and nowadays that includes immigrant and migrant groups circulating throughout the world. >> yes because we are international, we can go to different countries.
5:40 am
to be with your own people, just like in my case, i am chinese. i have an advantage because i no the culture, i can work with people, it is truly god's blessing for us. >> and we will come back after this brief break and talk more about the history and future of catholicism for the chinese. population. >> right. >> you have a long history. let me show you a couple of slides from the past. slide four and this is a chinese madonna at the chinese mission in san francisco in the 1920s. madonna and child. slide five, this is the 1940s and i am told this is a famous drama and bellcore from st. mary's school which practiced 470 or 80 years and was very well known as a tourist attraction. by the chinese in san francisco have had their difficulties. it seems to me that they are now fully assimilated. we have had historical things such as the first chinese bishop, named bishop in san francisco. and you have come to serve the chinese community here. so can you tell us about it? what is it doing and what are your activities, what are the challenges? >> from the very beginning when the chinese immigrants came here
5:44 am
, our church really opened our doors to welcome all the immigrants. they had difficulties in the beginning, it is really hard for them, for the church to find a catholic priest to serve them because not many priests speak chinese. but gradually, especially in the beginning of the 20th century, establishing of chinese missions, from that moment on people began to organize. and we saw that they started to evangelize. they opened a chinese school. evangelizing is always the goal of our church, to bring christ
5:45 am
to the chinese population in the bay area's, and we have tried to revive and create programs to evangelize. >> i notice, if we can show this slide again, i think this is slide 12. the chinese catholic pastoral ministry homepage, it's a beautiful website full of activities and news. i am wondering, who does the website for you? >> actually when i came here and i knew that we needed a website, also social media to evangelize. so i learned how to build a website. so i made it myself. >> so you make it yourself? well done.
5:46 am
>> it is beautiful but it is still in the process. >> and let me ask you, we can show this slide as well, slide number 13. it is what you call your pastoral plan. >> yes. we started to think about how to do evangelizing, how to get to our community. so we had a meeting, i called all the leaders of the diocese, the chinese ministry. we had a meeting and we worked out the chinese evangelizing plan so this is a partial plan. we already started the process. we have already appointed the leaders. so that way we can create a lot of activities. we have socialization,
5:47 am
spiritual activities, >> i see many ties and i wonder if it is attracted to the youth. it seems to me like there is a large cohort of chinese youth interested in the catholic faith. >> yes, we are building a good program. just last month in july i organized one activity and because a lot of young chinese professionals that are working in san francisco, i organized a barbecue. a lot of people came. >> this is interesting. i think the chinese families in the bay area, like other families, are having fewer children. but there is more chinese immigration, or at least visitation to the states. foreign students, large groups of professionals, so you make connections with these as well? >> yes, this is a ministry we
5:48 am
just started but i hope we can reach out to those students and colleges and highschool. and i have been invited to different high schools to give talks. there are thirtysomething students in riordan high school and thirtysomething students in notre dame high school. so i have been in the campus and talked to them about the faith. i've talked to them about church history. >> i no that there is a faith formation conference which now has workshops in chinese. and i no that our pastoral ministry has such works out to the chinese and there is more chinese literature. in our last minute of the segment can i bring up photos
5:49 am
six, seven, eightnineand 11 in that order? and just roll through them to show some of the beauty that the chinese culture has provided here to the catholic church. this liturgy we are going to see is in the cathedral. i believe it is chinese new year. >> yes. >> and this happens every year, we see the mass is in chinese, we have the bishop and others participating and there are chinese dancers, chinese decorations, a blessing of ancestors and so on. let's see if i have called these photos up. >> since i came over, before this activity, the liturgy is taking part of the old culture. we wanted to show chinese culture on a bigger scale so that is why we moved this liturgy.
5:50 am
>> it is quite beautiful. if we just roll through these you can get an idea of how gorgeous this is. the priest in their vestments are usually the most beautiful things in the mass but on this day quite beautiful things going on. and a prayer for the blessing of the ancestors. wonderful sermons and so on. and the chinese people singing in the choir. tell me about the good luck dragons, are they doing the right thing out here? >> this is a traditional dance, every chinese new year we celebrate, with dragons or liens. it represents the harmony between heaven and earth. between people and animals and among us. >> that is quite beautiful. and let me say, you can see that whole thing live on our youtube on the catholic archdiocese youtube channel. we will take a brief break and be back for the last segment with father peter zhai .

many missionaries over the past how many centuries, five centuries? >> actually the first missionary went to china in the eighth century, not catholic but they were there to proclaim christ so that is very early. and in the 13th century missionaries from the west came into the country and proclaim the gospel. >> when i read and i think it is correct, basically statistically, the christian population in china is growing. >> yes. >> people are interested in christianity. i think protestant christianity is 80% may be and catholic christianity is 10%, 20% or so. what do you make of this phenomenon? >> i think the chinese are always seeking spirituality.
5:54 am
and moral support in the family. and also, because christ's message is very attractive to the culture itself. people are really open to the great message that jesus brings to each of us. especially nowadays. people are materially satisfied but they have a deeper longing in their spiritual life. in their heart, and we are at this next step. where can they find meaning? people want to no what is the next step. that is why a great majority of chinese people, especially young people in college, are
5:55 am
very interested in seeking spiritual nourishment. >> it must be that hunger which doesn't die and i think you are right. i am not sure that we in the west appreciate how rapid the growth of the chinese economy has been. we hear about it a lot but truly, a huge middle-class and more and more people who are not in poverty. people who as you say have enough material things but want to no more. -- know more about what life is about. our catholic missionaries free to practice in china? >> yes. we now have some freedoms. not totally. and hopefully we can have total freedom very soon. to bring gospel to the people. and to get the message of hope and faith to all the people. >> we are next door to china here in california, it is just an ocean away.
5:56 am
i no you make coons inicopsã acadics. >> yes from time to time we have retreats with people from hong kong, thailand, there is always a great connection between china and the church here. >> and it is the catholic church which is the great word that means universal church. let me ask you if we have about a minute left what would you like people to remember or take away from this program? >> i would like to thank everybody and say please watch this program and i want to encourage everybody to pray especially for our church in china and may we have freedom to worship very soon. and establish a formal relationship with america.
5:57 am
i also pray for all the missionaries, especially the divine word missionaries who are working hard to bring the good news to others. we also want to gather people in chinese ministry, you do not have to be chinese. if you can pray for us and if you want to be a support to us, you can contact our chinese ministry office in the archdiocese. >> they can phone you at the archdiocese or go to your website. >> yes. >> and you could use people's have -- help in your ministry. and as a last note i have read that the population of christians in china maybe 200 million in 10 or 15 years which would make it the largest christian population in any country in the world. so the center of christianity is moving from the old european
