more than 100 acres have burned and containment is at 25%. the fire is burning in samuel p. taylor park. the fire is especially difficult for crews on the front lines. >> reporter: fire vehicles all around northern california are dotted around the state park this afternoon in case this fire really takes off. this view from chopper 5 shows some of the more than 100 acres that have burned so far. the irving fire started outside of the park around 7:00 last night and quickly advanced toward dozens of homes. >> we stood there and it was, you know, 100 feet high. right up there in the hill. it was terrifying. >> reporter: evacuations ordered just after 9:00 p.m. 100 people came here to the community center. did you sleep here? >> i did. >> reporter: did you get any sleep?

>> not much. >> reporter: firefighters worked on steep irn kleins throughout the night. >> there's heavy brush. >> reporter: only 100 of them made it here, leaving engine companies doing double duty. >> they're having to hold the hose and cut the lines. the going was slow. >> reporter: today, the manpower doubled, but they're exhausted. >> they drove through the night and got three hours of sleep after working all day yesterday and they're working through the day today. that's all we have. >> reporter: the people are thankful. >> our hearts go out to them. they were out there saving our wonderful community. >> reporter: the cause of the fire is under investigation. classes were canceled at the schools because many students are among the evacuees. now to the powerful hurricane threatening the east coast. this is the video from inside hurricane florence.

right now, the category 4 storm is on track to become one of the most catastrophic hurricanes to hit the eastern seaboard in decades. mary is tracking the storm from the weather center. >> and we want to show you the latest satellite imagery of hurricane florence. there's a well-defined eye and it was growing in size. a category 4 storm, a major hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 130 miles per hour. moves west, northwest at 17. and it will make direct landfall along the carolina coast as a major hurricane by friday morning. so really watching that. now we're talking about damaging winds and storm surge and a lot of rain. flooding likely up to 15 inches of rain for the carolina coast by saturday. we're catching that and keeping a close eye on that for you. and in the pacific, olivia the a tropical storm with maximum

sustained winds there of 65 miles per hour. looking like it's still headed toward hawaii. and it's a tropical storm affecting the islands by wednesday morning. there's 50 miles per hour. tropical storm-force winds for the islands. we'll talk about the weather here at home and what you can expect coming up. and this is a live look at the surf in north carolina where the water is getting choppy. people are still in the water. this is as hurricane florence churns closer to the eastern sea board. more than a million people underorders to evacuate. . >> reporter: hurricane florence is less than three days away from making expected landfall. preparations are in full swing up and down the south eastern coastline with people heeding the warnings and boarding up homes and businesses, filling their gas tanks, and getting out of town.

the four largest roads are going one way, away from the atlantic ocean where hurricane florence is approaching. and evacuations underway in north carolina and virginia. skch and resident -- and residents are stocking up. >> my wife and kids are leaving town to go stay with family further in. and i'm up in the air. but more than likely, we'll head out. >> reporter: many gas stations like this one in north carolina are running low on fuel as people are lining up to fill up tanks and gas cans. the hurricane hunter plane caught this video inside the storm. conditions in the eye are calmer. but don't let that fool you. >> expect it to strengthen to just shy of cat 5 status moving closer to the coastline of the carolinas. >> reporter: crews with fema are positions themselves from south carolina to delaware. they expect a 15-foot storm

homeless encampment this morning. it started just before 3 a-m in in oakland, dozens of people are displaced after a fire at a homeless encampment. it started just before 3:00 between garfield park and i- 880. families torched more than a dozen tens and shacks. but quick action prevented a total loss of the encampment. >> due to this being a homeless encampment, we're looking at using city resources to come in and assist with cleaning up and providing assistance to the individuals displaced. >> no one was hurt. the cause of the fire is under investigation. there is growing concern over new technology that could be the future of airport security. >> the tsa has a pilot program

at lax that uses facial recognition technology instead of checking boarding passes and driver's licenses. . >> reporter: the tsa is trying a facial recommend nis system it -- recognition system it hopes will speed up lines and add a layer of security. the agency is testing a future why fliers won't need a boarding pass or id check to go through security. >> the passenger experience is enhanced. you don't have to fumble through your belongings. walk up to the camera, pose for a photo, and you're on your way. >> reporter: the images are not saved on the camera and compared against a gallery of passport photos to confirm the identity. the process takes as little as two seconds. a document check takes about 20. >> i'm fine with it. i was just surprised by it. >> people with nothing to hide, they're all for it.

>> reporter: it's part of a larger push to meet a man date of people entering and leaving the country. the same technology is being used prior to boarding some international flighting leaving the u.s. and people entering the country and airports, including this system in washington and this border crossing with mexico in texas. and critics worry the technology may misidentify people of color. a test incorrectly matched 28 members of congress, identifying them as people arrested for a crime. the false matches were people of color. >> go slow. build in the protections. >> reporter: this senator was incorrectly matched in the test. he and republican senator mike lee repeatedly called for the department of homeland security to halt the rollout while privacy rules are put in place. >> until they lay out how they're going to divide the question of security versus priefs -- privacy, we want a go

and thursday. here's the reason why. the satellite and radar view, tracking the upper level low, the fall-like low on the way. it's bringing rain for the pacific northwest. and for the far northern portions of the state. we will stay cool and dry. the coolest day is thursday. no rain for us. we will have a big drop in temperatures, especially by thursday. for today, looking at low 60s for a high. mid 80s in santa rosa. and 80 for napa. mid 80s for fairfield and concord. the south bay, upper 70s for the highs. and here's the extended forecast and what you can expect. we are looking at temperatures cooler on wednesday thanks to that upper level low. upper 70s on wednesday inland. mid 60s for the bay. and then check out thursday, even cooler still. likely the coolest that we have seen in quite some time. mid 70s on thursday inland. mid 60s for the bay.
