good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. disaster is at the doorstep and it is coming in. that's what north carolina governor roy cooper said about hurricane florence which is expected to approach the coast of north and south carolina later today. florence is a category two hurricane at this time with sustained winds of 110 miles per hour. its eye is likely to make landfall near the north carolina/south carolina border late today or early tomorrow. hurricane is now taking a more southerly track and is expected to linger before moving inland. more than 10 million people are at risk in the southeast. florence remains a grave threat to life and property. storm surge warnings and watches extend from south carolina all the way up to the north carolina/virginia border.

a storm surge of up to 13 feet is possible along parts of the north carolina shore. and excessive, long-lasting rainfall, up to 40 inches in some areas can produce catastrophic inland flooding. mola lenghi is in wrightsville beach, north carolina. mola, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. today is it. it is the last day for people in harm's way to pawning and get out because by this time tomorrow, hurricane florence is expected to be slamming into the carolina coast. towns up and down the carolina coast are almost completely desserted. officials are warning the few who stayed behind of the dangers ahead. >> you put your life at risk by staying. don't plan to leave once the winds and rain start. >> reporter: forecasters predict the surge from hurricane florence could top 13 feet, enough to send water half a mile inland. firefighters in raleigh, north carolina, are going door to door warning people who live in flood zones. >> if the wind's high enough, we're going to have our employees hunkered down safely. we're not going to have them out on the road. it's not safe for them to be out

there. >> reporter: today's the last chance for residents to get out of the way. officials say when the storm is at its worst, first responders may not be able to help people get out of trouble. >> i don't know if you heard what he said, but he said catastrophic damage to life and property. >> reporter: these two heeded the warning. they left their south carolina college and drove home to massachusetts. >> if that thing hits myrtle, it wouldn't even be worried about when we're getting back, it's what are we getting back to. >> reporter: they have wide end the threat to include parts of georgia. it's also possible it hovers along the coastline increasing the deadly storm surge. well, duke energy which serves the carolinas anticipates that 1 to 3 million of its customers could be without electricity after the storm. some potentially for weeks. and of course duke is just one of the energy utility providers in this region.

>> thank you so much. ahead on "cbs this morning." cbs news anchor jeff glor will have the latest on florence from wilmington. a gunman in southern california shot and killed five people before taking his own life. the dabbiback to back shootings happened at a trucking business in bakersfield last night. police say the gunman and his wife walked into the business and confronted another man. the husband shot the man and his wife. a third man showed up and the gunman fatally shot him as well. then the unidentified gunman went to a nearby home and killed two more people. police say he hijacked a car, pulled into a parking lot and killed himself when confronted by a deputy. the shooter's identity has not been released. pope francis summoned more than 100 bishops to the vatican next year for a summit or preventing sex abuse by catholic clergy. today francis meets with the

delegation of church leaders from the united states. he's expected to address accusations that he knew ex-cardinatheodore mccck was ac. and here at ws making the news this morning. the executive producer of this network's flagship broadcast "60 minutes" has been fired. jeff fager has been accused of sexual misconduct. accusations he denies. but it was a threatening text that he sent to a colleague that cost him his job. >> reporter: jeff fager the executive producer of the oldest and most successful magazine news program in history "60 minutes" was fired from cbs news. this july six female former cbs employees told "the new yorker" fager would touch employees in ways that made them uncomfortable after drinking at office parties. 19 current and former employees told "the new yorker" fager allowed harassment in the

division. fager vehemently denied all of those claims. fager continued to come to work. on sunday, "the new yorker" reported a new accuser said she felt compelled to speak because she simply can't believe fager is back there. the article described her as a producer who was an intern at cbs in the early 2000s who said he groped her at a work party. in response, he said this san outrageous claim and it didn't happen, it is wrong. fager's departure comes days after ceo leslie moonves resigned following allegations of sexual assault and harassment. we caught up with cbs news president david rhodes after he briefed the 60 minutes staff. >> can't talk to you guys about this today. >> in a statement rhodes said fager's dismissal is not directly related to the allegations surfaced in press reports which continue to be investigated independently. however, he violated company policy and it is our commitment to uphold those policies. through his attorney, fager told cbs news they terminated my

contract early because i sent a text message to one of our own cbs reporters demanding that she be fair in covering the story. my language was harsh. cbs did not like it. >> i am that reporter. since jeff fager publicly referred to our exchange, i want to be transparent about it. first here's some background. sunday evening i reached out to fager for comment on the articles alleging he groped or touched cbs employees at company parties. in addition to denying these charges, fager in a text said, quote, if you repeat these false accusations without any of your own reporting to back them up, you will be held responsible for harming me. he went on to say, be careful, there are people who lost their jobs trying to harm me and if you pass on these damaging claims without your own reporting to back them up that will become a serious problem. the federal government's response to hurricane maria is under scrutiny again. photos surfaced showing what appears to be millions of water bottles meant for victims in puerto rico sitting on airport runway. sources on ground say that the bottles have been sitting at the airport since last fall. the water went unused and became too contaminated to drink. fema confirmed it delivered the

water but said it didn't track specific shipments. harvey weinstein is caught on video behaving inappropriately and a young tennis champion is about to break a record. those are some of the headlines on the morning news stand. "the new york times" reports the detention of migrant children in the u.s. has sky rocketed to the highest levels ever. almost 13,000 migrant kids are being housed at federally contracted shelters compared to 2,400 in may of last year. most of them crossed the border alone. roughly the same number of kids are crossing the borders as in years past, but people familiar with the shelter system say red tape and the fear of stricter immigration enforcement have discouraged relatives and fanlly friends from coming forward sponsor kids. variety shows harvey weinstein acting inappropriately with a woman in a business meeting in 2011. >> it's hot in here. >> what's that. >> it's hot in here. >> it is hot.

tariffs on $200 billion worth of chinese goods. according to "wall street journal," treasury secretary steven mnuchin issued the invitation for talks in the coming weeks. the american chamber of commerce and shanghai say two-thirds of companies in china say they've been hurt by the tariff war. worries about the trump administration's trade policy prompted some businesses to hold off or scale back capital investment plans. in its latest survey of business conditions across the country, the federal reserve found most remain optimistic about the company, but as trump administration policies are pushing costs higher for manufactured goods. stocks finished mixed yesterday, the dow rose 27 points. the s&p 500 added a point while the tech and nasdaq off 18. the u.s. has appeared to reclaim the title of top global oil producer. the u.s., quote, likely surpassed russia in june and august after jumping over saudi arabia earlier this year.
