studio newsroom here in new york. good to be with you, i'm anne-marie green. within hours hurricane florence is expected to make lanandfall over the carolina coast. overnight it has been bashing the coastline. it's been downgraded to a category one storm with 90 mile an hour sustained winds. but florence remains a massive slow-moving storm producing a life-threatening storm surge and unprecedented rain totals as it comes inland over the weekend. the national hurricane center warns of catastrophic flooding. this morning fema rescue teams are rushing to the aid of 150 people trapped in the river city of new bern, north carolina. they have been told to move to the second story or attic. the bridge to the town is blocked by deep water. so far more than 180,000 households have lost power in north carolina alone. mola lenghi is in wilmington, north carolina. >> reporter: florence wasted no time attacking the carolinas. thirst outer bands of the slow-moving storm quickly

brought a surge of water inland. the rushing water toppled a cameraman in topsail beach in north carolina and then made quick work of the garage. the storm's powerful winds toppled this gas station canopy. florence has already knocked out power to thousands throughout the region. >> our power just went out instantly. we weren't expecting it. it was way too early. we were trying to charge our things for the storm to come and it already went out. >> reporter: officials say millions of people may be left without electricity and it could be weeks before it's all fully restored. but it's the flooding that's expected to reek havoc over the next few days. >> surviving this storm will be a test of endurance, team work, common sense, and patience. >> more than 1.5 million people mr. wondering what will be left when they return. >> we're concerned. we don't know what we're going to go back to, you know what i

mean? >> in south carolina, eddie garoppolo decided to ride out the storm. >> we'll put her in the wind and see the best we can do. >> reporter: the eye of florence isn't expected to reach land until later today. >> that was mola lenghi reportsing from wilmington, north carolina. bill walsh of our affiliate mo who is following florence says don't be fooled by the diminishing winds, this remains a very dangerous storms. >> okay, yeah. north carolina still taking a pounding, still a lot of storm surge and still a potential for a deadly storm surge, particularly north and east of the center of florence as florence continues to make its play for the north carolina coast. look at this, this is moorhead city. that onshore flow is going to continue not only today but into tonight and into tomorrow. here it is 7:00 this morning. i'm going to take you on into the afternoon hours. doesn't move too much, cut off from the steering carnes, but still a southeasterly flow,

coming in off the ocean, so more storm surge kins for south carolina saturday, saturday night, and into sunday. appearance a very slow move. so we'll see the storm surge across the coast even into parts of south carolina and toward the queen city of charlotte wye lot of rain. how much rain? how about 20 inches possible up into eastern north carolina. about 10 to 15 inches northeastern south carolina. then in charlotte we're talking lots of heavy rain, about 4 to six inches. up toward roanoke and hagerstown and pittsburgh we're still looking at 2 to 4 inches of rain and that rain's going to continue all the way up into the ohio valley, eventually all the way up into new england. not just a storm surge problem, a heavy rain problem and a runoff problem with the rivers really over the next couple of days. bottom line, it's a big, big hazard all across the eastern u.s. >> that was meteorologist bill

walsh. one person was killed and at sees of gas explosions in communities north of boston. at least 39 homes were destroyed and entire communities were forced to evacuate yesterday. one fire official described the scene as armageddon. kenneth craig has our report from north andover massachusetts. >> firefighters attempted to douse this home engulfed in flames. it's just one of dozens to catch fire in three towns north of boston. >> i've been in the fire service for almost 39 years and i've never seen anything like this. it looked like armageddon. >> an apparent explosion blew the walls off of this house and cracked the side of the home in two. >> there was somewhere between 60 and 80 fires, structure fires across the three communities, at least three explosions aswell

>> reporter: authorities blamed the fire on gas lines that become overpressurized. one man said the furnace in his basement burst into flames. crews scam blingd to battle all the different fires which would hit one home and then another several blocks away. >> residents in this neighborhood told me around 5:00 they heard and felt a loud explosion and then minutes later saw fire trucks and first responders flooding their streets. >> just heard like a massive explosion. it just shook the house. so at that point, you know, we got out of the house. >> reporter: entire neighborhoods were evacuated with fears any house could be next. crews worked to depressurize the gas line so people could return to their homes. >> right now, the focus is every house go in there, shut the gas off. make it safe so people can get back in their house as soon as possible. >> reporter: power was shut down in hopes of preventing another fire leaving thousands in the dark. the fbi is investigating along with state and local

authorities. kenneth craig, cbs news, north andover, massachusetts. this morning, president trump is being criticized by democrats and some republicans avenue disputed the official death count in puerto rico following hurricane maria. last month puerto rico's governor raised the official death toll from 64 to nearly 3,000 following an independent study. mr. trump dismissed the study tweeting it was part of a conspiracy. this was done by the democrats in order to make me look as bad as possible when i was successfully raising billions of dollars to help rebuild puerto rico. the trump administration was sharply criticized for its recovery efforts following maria which devastated puerto rico a year ago. this morning in the pacific ocean what was hurricane olivia has weakened to a post tropical cyclone and it's moving away from hawaii. but the storm brought heavy rain and flooding to the hawaiian islands. some moisture will linger today

causing some damage. we've seen some down gas stations canopies blown over, some trees and limbs all blown to the ground. thousands of people are already without power. millions more are expected to lose power here in the coming days. some of whom could stay without power, according to officials for weeks after this storm. but really it's the water. the water does still remains the main concern from the storm surge potential to the torrential rains to the widespread flooding. that still remains a major concern in the days and weeks to come, anne-marie. >> all right. thank you right now. hurricane florence has forced more than a million people for that storm pot people are riding out the storm in shelters in other parts of the state, including the raleigh durham area. nearly 300 people and their pets are getting meals and a place to
