power. i'm michelle obama. >> i'm emily turner. you are looking at myrtle beach, south carolina. you can hardly see out of the camera because of the rain on the lens. mare mare is tracking the -- mary is tracking the story. a category 1 hurricane. let's get to the radar. you can see hurricane florence riding the carolina coast. when it made landfall at 4:15 a.m. our time, winds were clocking in 105 miles per hour. now, from hatteras, wilmington and myrtle beach, tropical storm forced winds currently. we have been talking about this storm as the storm of a lifetime and here is the reason why. it is a slow moving storm, westerly at 5 miles per hour. it will continue to stay close to the coast. that's close to the energy source, the warm waters of the atlantic and that manes dumping

a torrential amount of rain, the possibility of 3 feet of rain, we have already seen dangerous storm surge of 9 feet there, very strong winds and flash flooding currently maintaining its hurricane strength all day today as a category 1 hurricane and then down to a tropical storm by tomorrow morning. this is really a catastrophic event going on in the carolina coast. toppling florence hammered the carolinas as it slammed ashore as a category 1 hurricane, 90 miles an hour winds toppling this gas station canopy. a 10-foot storm surge inundated north carolina, it's the same in new burn where rescue crews pulled at least 200 people from their homes. dozens more are still waiting for rescue. >> i'm looking on the street and i'm amazed i have never

seen this kind of damage here. >> reporter: florence knocked out power to around 500,000 homes and businesses, most of them in north carolina. >> our power went out instantly. we weren't expecting it. it was way too early. >> reporter: because this storm is moving so slowly, forecasters say rainfall could set records over the next few days. as you can see, water levels oh on the inner coastal waterways are rising, the fear is flooding may become catastrophic. some of the river levels are going the be forecast to exceed the historic levels. >> reporter: the outer bands began attacking the carolinas yesterday, pushing water inland. the rushing water toppled the cameraman in north top sail beach, north carolina, thousands spent the night in shelters and now many wonder what will be left when they return.

house minority leader nancy pelosi is weighing in on the disaster. she emphasized the need for renewed action in the hurricane recovery and response nearly a year since hurricane maria made landfall in port rico. >> understanding they don't want to alienate the president but understanding also that we all have responsibilities to the people of port rico and the virgin islands to do the right thing. >> president trump claimed the official government estimate that 3000 people died from hurricane maria was a lie. back here in the bay area, there are new health concerns in hunters point neighborhood after a small radio active object was found a few feet away from people's homes. >> jack ward is here to explain what this means for residents and the company hired to clean

deal to avoid a second criminal trial. the agreement was announced in federal court. >> reporter: paul manafort struck a deal with prosecutors and pled guilty in a washington dc court friday morning. manafort now admits to charges of conspiring against the united states and obstruction of justice , the maximum sentence for the charges is 10 years as part of the deal, president trump's former campaign chairman agreed to cooperate with special council robert muller as part of his investigation in to collusion between the trump campaign and russia. manafort is the 5th person close to president trump agreed to cooperate and provide evidence to muller's team. manafort had reportedly been reluctant to cooperate because he was hoping for a pardon from president trump. manafort has fought all of the charges against him, going through with a full trial last month. that prompted president trump to tweet unlake michael cohen, he refused to break and make up

stories to get a deal, such respect for a brave man. >> it's called flipping and almost ought to be illegal. you get 10 years in jail, if you abad things about somebody or make up stories, they make up lies. >> reporter: in august, mr. trump's former personal lawyer, michael cohelp, agreed to cooperate with muller's team. the white house says manafort's guilty plea is unrelated to work he did for the trump campaign and they insist president trump himself has done nothing wrong. several bay area leaders are working together to create opportunities for disadvantaged commute across california. often times washington passes something but at the local level we scratch our heads and have to figure it out one town one city at a time. >> reporter: the mayors of some
