studio at cbs news headquarters in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. next monday, supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh and the woman who accuses him of sexual assault when they were in high school will testify under oath on capitol hill. it sets up a dramatic public showdown with the potential to derail kavanaugh's nomination. kavanaugh spent yesterday at the white house and says that he wants to defend his integrity. republicans still hope the senate judiciary committee can vote on kavanaugh's nomination by next week. we have this report. >> reporter: senate republicans huddled trying to figure out how to handle the now-public allegation. >> to go back 35 years to high school, we're in a very unusual place. >> reporter: dr. christine blasey ford, a psychologist,

said kavanaugh pinned her to the bed and put his hand over her mouth, saying, "i thought he might "he was trying to attack me and remove my clothing, i thought he might inadvertently kill me." >> i believe her. many, many, many americans believe her. >> do you have any response to christine ford? >> reporter: kavanaugh reiterated, saying, "this is a completely false alleged," adding, "because this never happened, i had no idea who was making this accusation until she identified herself yesterday." he and his accuser said they're willing to testify publicly. the president said they should. >> i want him to go in at the absolute highest level, and i think to do that you have to go through this. if it takes a little delay, it will take a little delay. >> reporter: that sparked a debate among republicans who were hoping to hold a committee vote on kavanaugh this week. >> democrats have spent weeks and weeks searching for any possible reason that the

nomination should be delayed. >> reporter: rushing him throug republicans like susan collins of maine. >> senator do you need to see a public hearing featuring ford before you can vote on kavanaugh? >> i have said that i believe in order for me to assess the credibility of these allegations that i want to have both individuals come before the senate judiciary committee and testify under oath. >> reporter: ford first shared the information with her congresswoman, annai esho, in july, but remained anonymous. eshoo helped ford write a letter detailing her claims. last week word leaked which prompted ford to come forward. nancy cordes, cbs news, capitol hill. ahead, california democratic senator kamala harris, a member of the senate judiciary committee, joins us to discuss

monday's hearing. this morning what was hurricane florence is now a low-pressure area moving into the northeast. the crisis produced by the storm continues in the carolinas as rivers continue to rise, producing catastrophic flooding. as florence heads north, it is still dropping heavy rain. authorities say at least 32 people have died because of the storm. most in north carolina. nearly half a million customers there remain without power. one of the fatalities is tied to an apparent tornado spawned by the remnants of florence that hit near richmond, video. laura podesta has the details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. and because rivers are still rising, that 32-person death toll may possibly increase in the coming days. florence is also shaping up to be one of the costliest storms to ever hit the u.s. >> tornado -- >> oh! >> reporter: an apparent tornado ravaged buildings and homes in

virginia. the latest problem in the wake of hurricane florence. one person died and another was injured when this warehouse collapsed. >> there were plenty of people, they were in this warehouse and building working. we didn't have any more injuries or deaths. >> reporter: a handful of possible tornadoes also struck north carolina yesterday. >> we thought florence was gone. we thought she was gone. >> reporter: residents throughout the carolinas are still dealing with historic flooding. and it's only getting worse with some rivers still rising. >> i didn't pay any attention to the evacuation thing yesterday because i wanted to stay. i didn't believe it would make it, but it did. >> inside my how to was five feet this morning. everything downstairs is ruined. >> reporter: economists at moody's analytics estimate florence may end up as one of the top-ten costliest hurricanes to hit the u.s. with $17 billion to $22 billion in property damage, maybe more. >> north carolina -- >> reporter: larry baldwin is

with the north carolina environmental group. he flew over flooded areas to assess the farmland. >> the situation is not good, but it's likely to get much worse throughout the rest of the week as these waters start to get to their flood levels. >> reporter: the city of wilmington is handing out 60,000 packaged meals this morning to residents still trapped by flooded roads. 18 counties in north carolina have qualified for federal disaster aid. yesterday the state's governor, roy cooper, toured heavily damaged newbern where officials estimate one-third of the homes were inundate by floodwaters. he assured residents the state will help with recovery. anne-marie? >> laura podesta here in new york. thanks a lot. overseas now. the leaders of north and south korea are meeting in the north korean capital. ♪ moon jae-in arrived in north korea this morning for his third summit with north korean leader

kim jong-un. moon hopes to help break an impasse in talks with the u.s. over denuclearization. it's the first visit by a south korean leader to the north korean capital in 11 years. the justice department says it's working on president trump's order to declassify documents related to the russia investigation. the documents include text messages from former fbi director, james comey, and a secret surveillance application targeting former campaign adviser, carter page. the president's allies believe the documents will prove an anti-trump bias in the fbi. robert mueller cleared the way for a judge to sentence former national security adviser michael flynn. as part of a plea deal last year, flynn admitted to lying to the fbi about his contacts with russian officials. prosecutors have delayed his sentencing as the investigation continued. they now have asked the judge to set sentencing for november 28th so the specifics of flynn's

cooperation would be kept private from the public until after the midterm elections. for the second year in a row the united states is cutting the number of refugees it accepts. up to 30,000 will be allowed into the country next year. 15,000 less than this year. it's the lowest number of refugee admissions since 1980. >> this year's refugee ceiling also reflects our commitment, our commitment to protect the most vulnerable around the world while prioritizing the safety and well-being of the american people. >> president trump has made limiting immigration a centerpiece of his policy agenda. and coming up on the morning news, a trip of a lifetime. spacex reveals its first moon passengers. and a surprise on emmy night. a winner pops the question to his girlfriend. this is the "cbs morning news." and talk about protecting your enamel. it's important to look after your enamel

[ applause ] >> weiss who directed the oscars had just won the emmy for director of a variety special. he proposed during his acceptance speech and said his mother, who died two weeks ago, adored his girlfriend, jan svendsen. he proposed with a ring his dad gave to his mom 67 years ago. as for the other winners of the night, hbo and netflix tied for most wins with 23, amazon's "the marvelous mrs. maisel" became the first streaming series to win best comedy. hbo's "game of thrones" was

named the best drama. ahead on "cbs this morning," "entertainment tonight's" kevin frazier with more highlights from the emmys. the "washington post" reports elon musk's spacex company plans to fly a japanese billionaire and several artists on a tourist trip around the moon. musk announced that entrepreneur yusaku maezawa is spacex's first paying customer. >> finally i can say, i can tell you that i chose to go to the moon. >> he said that he would invite six to eight artists including sculptors, painters, architects, and film directors from around the world to join him on the week-long flight in 2023. musk didn't reveal how much maezawa is paying but said it was a lot of money. the trip will take place on the big "falcon" rocket. which is still in development. a british diver who helped rescue 12 children and an adult

in thailand is suing elon musk for defamation. he's seeking $75,000 claiming musk falsely accused him of being a pedophile. musk called the diver a pedo guy in a july tweet and came after unsworth criticized the sub they built to help in the rescue. he apologized but later called him a pedophile again and a child rapist. the "dallas morning news" reports a former white dallas police officer began a 15-year prison sentence for shooting and killing an unarmed black teenager. roy oliver began serving the sentence yesterday. he was convicted of murdering 15-year-old jordan edwards last year when he fired into a car carrying edwards and four other teens. oliver said that he thought the car was going to hit his partner as they responded to a report of a noisy house party. still to come, a new high for coca-cola fans. a major soda-maker explores

cannabis. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the u.s. chamber of commerce and other business groups are condemning president trump's plan to impose another round of stiff tariffs on chinese imports. this morning a chinese newspaper reports china may skip next week's scheduled trade talks in washington. the trump administration imposed 10% tariffs on about $200 billion worth of chinese imports. the new import taxes begin september 24th and will increase to 25% on january 1st. u.s. chamber of commerce president thomas donahue said the u.s. economy runs on pro-growth policies, but that's not what tariffs on $200 billion worth of chinese goods deliver. the latest round of tariffs spare some consumer products including child safety products, smart watches from apple and fitbit. parts for computer service and networking gear that power cloud data centers will be included. the president warned china if it retaliates he'll impose tariffs on an additional $267 billion worth of chinese goods.

the new tariffs sent tech stocks lower leading to a down day on wall street. most of the market fell with the exception of real estate, utilities, and other so-called safe sectors. in the end, the dow dropped 92 points. the s&p 500 lost 16, and the tech-heavy nasdaq fell 114 points. meanwhile, the coca-cola company says it is, quote, closely watching the marijuana-infused drink market. that's all coke would say following a report that it was in talks with a canadian cannabis company. it becomes legal october 17th. coke's interest lies in a nationally occurring, non-psychoactive chemical called cbd. it helps with pain and does not produce a high. >> thank you very much, diane. >> thank you. still ahead, flood victims return home. why some residents in north carolina refuse to lose hope after hurricane florence. icane florence.

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ yelich knocks one to the gap in right center. this could be the one -- he's going to be held to a double. he's trying for three. he's going to do it -- get down! he's in there! [ cheers ] >> a record-setting night for the milwaukee brewers' christian yelich. he hit for the cycle against the cincinnati reds with a six-inning triple. yelich became the first player in major league history to hit for the cycle against the same team twice in one season. he singled in the first inning of last night's game, doubled in the second inning, and then homered in the fifth inning.

that set the stage for his dramatic triple in the sixth. the brewers won 8-0. across the carolinas, communities are coming together to help neighbors deal with the devastating floods caused by hurricane florence. in jacksonville, north carolina, marine corps vets are lending a helping hand. we have the story. got two more families to pull out of this one -- >> reporter: days ago this typically quiet street, hampton court, was a fast-rising river. volunteers had to use boats to get down the road looking for anyone in need of help. >> hello? >> reporter: we saw a pickup nearly submerged in water. this is that truck. it's hard to believe's the same one. >> i was surrounded by water. >> reporter: it belongs to brandy glen harris, one of many retired marines on this block. this was his house saturday. >> i think about all the years my wife and i have been together, stuff we had to bring into our lives.

our top stories this morning -- supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh and the woman who claims he sexually assaulted her when they were in high school will testify at a senate hearing on monday. christine blasey ford says kavanaugh was drunk when he held her down, groped her, and tried to remove her clothing. kavanaugh denies the allegation and says he wants to defend his integrity. and an apparent tornado triggered by the remnants of hurricane florence touched down near richmond, virginia, killing one person when a building collapsed. what's left of florence is moving into the northeast today, but the carolinas are still reeling from the severe weather. widespread flooding remains, and some rivers have yet to crest. the storm killed at least 32

people. and we're learning more about how a would-be victim helped stop a killing spree. sheriff's deputies say the suspect, a border patrol agent, confessed. omar villafranca has more. ortiz carried out these murders in a cold and callous way. >> reporter: investigators recounted the chilling details of how border patrol agent juan david ortiz lured and allegedly murdered four women. the killing spree began on september 3rd when ortiz killed 29-year-old melissa ramirez and left her on the side of the road. last thursday, he picked up and then shot 42-year-old claudine ann luetta, also leaving her on the side of the highway. friday he picked up erica pena who escaped from his truck after she pulled off her shirt to get free. she fled and alerted a state trooper which started the manhunt for ortiz. during the five-hour search, detectives say he killed two more victims before he was found

hiding under a truck. sheriff's investigators said ortiz's victims were prostitutes and drug users. are you confident that you're not going to find any more victims? >> we're not confident. we know it's an ongoing investigation. >> reporter: ortiz served in the u.s. navy for eight years and then worked for customs and border patrol for almost ten years. what investigators don't know is why ortiz went on the alleged killing spree. >> he had entrusted his victims to come along with him several times. he knew the victims, and the victims knew him. >> reporter: chief garsa said ortiz was heavily armed and ready for a shoot-out with deputies, but ultimately no shots were fired. he's in jail on a $2.5 million bond. omar villafranca, cbs news, laredo, texas. coming up on "cbs this morning," elizabeth smart talks with gayle king in her first sit-down interview since getting
