right here in new york city, i'm michelle miller. it's wednesday, september 19th, 2018. this is the cbs morning news. >> another twist in the confirmation process of supreme court justice nominee brett kavanaugh. now the woman who claimed he assaulted her when they were teens is making a new request. the death toll climbs in the aftermath of hurricane florence. rivers are still rising and there is more danger ahead. and big promises made at the summit between both korean leaders.

good morning from the cbs morning headquarters. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. the woman who alleges supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh sexually assaulted her 37 years ago says she wants to testify before senate committee. but kristine blaiseny ford wants the fbi to investigate before she talks. the committee has scheduled a hearing on monday and they say that may be her one and only chance to testify. good morning, laura. >> reporter: good morning. lawyers for ford who is now a college professor in california say in the days since she went public she and her family have been the target harassment and even death threats. now, the committee's chairman senator chuck grassley said no one should be subject to intimidation, but he does not think an fbi investigation would have any bearing on dr. ford's

story. the woman accusing supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh of sexual assault wants the fbi to investigate her claims before she testifies on capitol hill. the senate judiciary committee has invited both of them to speak separately on monday. dr. kristine blasey ford's attorney told cbs ford wants to cooperate but not before a full investigation. >> there's no reason that we should have a public hearing on monday given what has occurred and when it has occurred. this is being rushed through and it's too important to be rushed through. it's not a game. >> reporter: kavanaugh denies the allegations. yesterday, president trump stood by his nominee and rejected the idea of ordering the fbi to investigate. >> politically speaking, the senators will do a very good job. they really will. >> reporter: republicans accused democrats of trying to delay kavanaugh's confirmation and said monday will be ford's only opportunity to testify. >> my idea of having a hearing

was to accommodate her request to tell her story in a hopefully dignified and civil sort of setting. and if she decides not to show up, that's entirely her choice. >> reporter: meanwhile, democrats are not surprised republicans are ignoring the calls to investigate. >> this totally disadvantages dr. ford. not only does it disadvantage her, but it victimizes her. >> reporter: kavanaugh is still expected to speak before the committee whether or not ford shows up. republicans have said they want to confirm kavanaugh before the supreme court begins its october session. anne-marie. >> thanks a lot, laura. well, president trump travels to north carolina today to see the damage caused by hurricane florence. here's the latest. the death toll from the storm now stands at at least 37 in three states, 27 in north carolina alone. some 10,000 people remain in shelters but countless others have been forced from their homes. more than a thousand roads in

north carolina are still closed. the flooding problem is not over. 16 rivers in north carolina are at major flood stage. as demarco morgan reports, the flooding is so bad it reached the top edge of a bridge near fayetteville. >> reporter: the slow and steady rise continues. it's expected to crest near 62 feet before they closed the person street bridge to watch the nearby railroad bridge which might not hold under pressure. >> all that debris backing up on that bridge is going to be a strain on those trusses. >> reporter: but some of the state's infrastructure is holding. right here behind me you have the brand-new hope mills dam that controls the water coming from the lake. had it failed, it would have sent water rushing downstream flooding homes and businesses. but it appears it's done its job. james gray removed plywood from the local optometrist's office right next to the dam. and being this close to a body

of water. >> yes, sir, very close. >> reporter: could have been worse. theig here behind us terrible. comes up into our parking lot. >> reporter: days after florence made landfall, parts of more than a dozen rivers in the state have reached the stage of major flooding with three for expected to peak in the next two days. in wilmington, many residents remain displays placed and took advantage of supply centers. ing onners are adjusting to floodwaters where this rowboat is still the only way for this nurse to get to work. >> i'll be glad when i can just drive home. drive to the door. >> reporter: believe it or not, the city is trying to get back to normal. the nightlife curfew has ended but the hope is that the cape fear crest will come and go so they can get back to this daunting task of recovery. fayetteville, north carolina. well, overseas now this morning, leaders of north and

south korea announced a set of agreements on the second day of their summit. north korean leader kim jong-un has agreed to shut down one of north korea's main missile testing and launch sites, that's according to south korea's president moon jae-in. the two leaders say they took a major step toward peace on the korean peninsula. they agreed to establish a buffer zone to reduce military tension, and vowed to work together to host the 2032 summer olympics. a star collegiate golfer at iowa state university was supposed to receive recognition at saturday's football game for being the school's female athlete of the year. instead, a prekickoff memorial will be held for her. she was attacked and killed on monday. a homeless man has been charged with first degree murder. dean reynolds has more on this story. >> reporter: she was not only a top amateur golfer from spain

who played in the u.s. open in june and named the top female athlete here at iowa state university, but she also found time to major in civil engineering. >> i want to study engineering. and she's like, go for it, it's all good. >> reporter: christi martins was her coach. >> she's really special to me and i really ---ive love her a lot and her family. it's really hard to believe. >> reporter: all that promise came to a violent end on monday when police say her body was found about 11:00 a.m. in a water hazard near the ninth tee of the cold water golf course. she had been stabbed repeatedly in broad daylight. her golf bag rested on the fairway. police dogs soon focused their attention on a wooded area nearby in a tent camp of drifters amid the trees. >> officers were in the area of the camp when they encountered collin daniel richardson. richards had several fresh

scratches on his face consistent with a fight. >> reporter: bloody clothes and a knife were also found at the tent site. richards has a history of violent crime and drug use. essentially homeless at the time of his arrest, he now lives in jail. and according to investigators here, the suspect who just got out of prison in june told an acquaintance that he had an urge to rape and kill a woman as he and that acquaintance walked near the golf course. dean reynolds, cbs news, iowa. the woman who helped kidnap elizabeth smart is scheduled to be released from prison early this morning. in an interview with gayle king on "cbs this morning," smart says that she believes wanda barzee remains a danger. >> you said she has shown no remorse to you at all? >> part of her plea deal back when her case came up it was required for her to write an apology to me. but it was just a very brief i'm

"the new york times" reports on one of the largest settlements ever awarded to individual victims of abuse within the catholic church. four men who were repeatedly

abused as children by a religious teacher at a church in brooklyn, new york, reached a $27.5 million settlement with the diocese of brooklyn and a local after school program. the sexual assaults took place between 2003 and 2009. boys were between the ages of 8 and 12. a newport beach california surgeon who appeared on a bravo reality tv show is accused of raping two women according to orange county register. he is charged with drugging and raping the women. his girlfriend is also charged. investigators found hundreds of videos of apparently intoxicated women. it's believed there are other victims. defense lawyers for him plan to deny the allegation, say he plans to deny the allegations. he has appeared on the reality show online dating rituals of the american male. now, the "dallas morning news" reports a daycare worker

has been charged with nine counts of endangering a child. rebecca anderson owner of a daycare in mesquite told law enforcement that she gave children tylenol to make her job easier and kept them strapped in car seats. i man attached a camera if to his child's car seat and they found three locked be in closets and others laying on the floor. julie chen is stepping down as daytime co-host the talk. she is leaving after her husband leslie mooves was fired from cbs. >> i have been at the talk since the day it started nine years ago and the cast, crew, and staff have become family to me over the years. but right now, i need to spend more time at home with my husband and our young son. so i've decided to leave the talk. i want to thank everyone. >> in a statement, cbs said it

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. on "cbs moneywatch," china responds to new tariffs and pressure on tesla. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, diane. >> as expected, china retaliated after the trump administration levied a new round of tariffs on chinese imports. this morning, china's premier said unilateral trade actions will not solve any trade issues. china said it will levy taxes on about $60 billion worth of u

goods including coffee, honey and industrial chemicals. that fold word that the u.s. would impose new tariffs of of 10% on some 2-billion dollars worth of chinese goods beginning september 24th. that rate would increase to 25%. stock finished broadly higher led by gapes in tech and consumer focus companies. the dow rallied 180 points. s&p added 15. the nasdaq gained 16. shares of tesla dropped 3.4% after word the justice department is investigating elon musk's public statements about taking the company private. the electric carmaker says the issue should be quickly resolved. funding for a deal that wvae72 . tesla stock rose on the news at the time. two weeks later musk dropped the

plan. since then shares of tesla has dropped about 25%. to charge musk with the crime, they would have to prove he did that. seaworld agreed it pay more than $5 million to say they misled investigators about the negative impact black fish, a documentary about killer whales had on business. black fish was released in july of 2013. it fold the life of an orca that killed a seaworld trainer depeblingting the captivity and exhibition of killer whales as cruel. following the film's release the company's stock plunged by a third and by 2016 seaworld decided to phase out killer whale shows. a u.s. court of appeals ruled workers must be paid minimum wage when they perform tasks that are unrelated to their main jobs and don't offer tips. that issues is a federal law that allows work who receive tips to be paid at little as

truck driver who was grateful his pet was not injured. a man who was caught on video shaving on a train is speaking out. anthony torres was captured on a new jersey transit train thursday shaving and flicking the whiskers on the floor. the clip was posted on twitter and viewed more than 2 million times. some people called him a slob. torres explains why he was shaving. >> because i just got out of a shelter, felt dirty, didn't take a shower, didn't shave. >> 56-year-old torres had just run out of eligible days in a new york city shelter and was on his way to his brother's house in new jersey. he said he wanted to look presentable. he is now staying with his brother. a pennsylvania hospital is seeing a christmas storm baby boom. nine months after a historic snowstorm, the university of pittsburgh center ham met has delivered 120 babies this month. that's outpacing of 180 for the entire month.
