for some you have, the news continues. or others, check become a little later for the morning news, and of course cbs this mo it's friday, september 21, 2018. this is the "cbs morning news." the woman who's accusing supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh of assault says certain conditions need to be met before she testifies. michael cohen is cooperating. president trump's former attorney has been collaborating with special counsel robert mueller. and breaking a losing streak. the cleveland browns celebrate a victory and fans enjoy free beer.

good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well this morning there is no decision on if or when christine blasey ford will testify about supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh before a senate committee. but ford's lawyers and senate staffers are talking. the committee scheduled a hearing for monday. ford's preference is to testify next thursday. and there were other issues like security that need to be ironed out. senate judiciary committee chairman chuck grassley is consulting with his colleagues. and john is here in new york. good morning. >> good morning to you, anne-marie. ford's attorney says she'll testify, but not with judge kavanaugh in the room at the time. the college professor also says she's received death threats and wants lawmakers to ensure her president trump heaped praise upon his embattled supreme court nominee at a rally in las vegas last night.

>> brett kavanaugh is one of the finest human beings you will ever have the privilege of knowing or meeting. >> brett kavanaugh's confirmation to the supreme court has been delayed as the senate deals with accusations by christine blasey ford who says he sexually assaulted her when they were in high school. kavanaugh denies her allegation. >> so we got to let it play out, but i want to tell you he is a fine, fine person. >> before the speech, the president told fox news's sean hannity, the senate needs to move forward. >> why didn't somebody call the fbi 36 years ago? you could also say when did this happen? what's going on. >> with coming before a committee -- >> white house and republicans have denied requests by ford's attorneys for an fbi investigation. and have pushed forward with a monday hearing for ford and kavanaugh. >> this is a fast track. they are totally intent on getting judge kavanaugh on to the supreme court come hell or high water. >> democrat senars p

is bullying ford. >> who is not asking the fbi to investigate these claims? the white house. >> ford's attorney says she's willing to testify, but wants to do so later in the week. kavanaugh told committee he'll be there monday and wants to clear his name. now judge kavanaugh says he too has received death threats. anne-marie, it appears we are heading towards a dramatic senate showdown next week, we just don't know exactly when. >> so true. thank you very much, john. president trump's former personal lawyer michael cohen has been cooperating with special counsel robert mueller. cohen pleaded guilty to campaign finance and other charges last month. he has had multiple meetings with investigators who want to know about interactions between the president or russia eemer in business or the campaign.

he is providing information to prosecutors without a cooperation agreement. last night cohen's attorney tweeted, good for michael cohen for providing critical information to the mueller investigation. tran dai quang, the president of vietnam, died this morning. he died in hanoi following what's described as a serious illness. he was 61 years old. his last public appearance was monday. he hosted president trump on his first state visit last year. a gunman was killed by police during a dramatic shootout near miami international airport last night. police say the gunman used an assault rifle to fire on officers. it is unclear why the suspect was wanted by police. gunfire broke out following a chase and none of the officers were injured. and three people were killed, another three wounded when a woman opened fire at a drugstore warehouse in maryland. the alleged shooter was an employee and witnesses say she had been seen arguing with another worker before she opened fire. she then fatally shot herself.

chip reid has details. >> any idea what the number of victims are? >> not at this time. >> reporter: first responders arrived on the scene about five minutes after the shooting began. >> two gsws, one to the chest, one to the abdomen at location. >> reporter: terrified employees poured out of the rite aid distribution center as police and medical responders arrived finding a horrific scene, seven people had been shot. three of the victims died, three others were seriously injured. the seventh was the shooter identified by police as a temporary employee of the facility. hartford county sheriff jeff gaylor. >> our suspect is a lone female suspect, age 26, who had a last known address in baltimore county. she has died at the hospital from a fatal injury, self-inflicted gunshot wound. >> she used a 9 millimeter glock handgun. her motive has not been

identified. crystal watson's hospital called from inside the building after witnessing the shooting. >> she didn't even aim, she just shot. it's so upsetting, so emotional for me right now. i just want to get to my husband. >> reporter: one woman in the building sent this text to her children. i love you, be good and take care of daddy and the pets if something should happen. there has been two other multiple shootings in hartford county in the past. last year three people were shot and killed at an industrial park. two others were injured. in 2016 a gunman fatally shot two hartford county sheriff's deputies, sheriff gaylor had to make the announcement then too. >> both deputy who's were shot earlier today have succumb to their injuries. >> moseley was not known to law enforcement, but it's extremely rare for a woman to commit a crime like this one. according to a recent fbi study that looked at 63 active shooters between 2000 and 2013, 94% were male.

law enforcement officials say the big question now is why she began shooting. they say they have no motive for a senseless crime. chip reid. a candlelight vigil was held last night for a young woman killed while jogging in washington, d.c. wendy martinez was stabbed tuesday night just two blocks from where she lived. martinez's mother spoke at last night's service. >> because i know it wasn't him. it was somebody else. it was evil being incarnated. >> the reason for the attack is not clear. police do not believe the suspect knew martinez or that it was a case of robbery. she became engaged just last week. one week after hurricane florence slammed into the carolina coast, some evacuees are starting to return home.

two airport workers confronted him. he ran away. one of the workers tackle and subdued him until police arrived. investigators do not believe he has any link to terrorism. the san francisco chronicle reports people who want straws with their drinks at california restaurants will have to ask for them. governor jerry brown signed a law making california the first state to bar full service restaurants from automatically giving out plastic straws. restaurants that don't comply will get two warnings before being fined. the law does not apply to fast food restaurants. he also signed that milk or water be served as the did he fault drink sold with kid's meals. the laws go into effect next year. mcdonald's gave two texas students $25,000 each after their fake ad went unnoticed in an epic prank. they put a poster of themselves in a mcdonald's restaurant for more than a

s&p 500 rose 22 points also hitting a an-time hype hitting 10% for the year. he nasdaq jumped 78 points yesterday. value of american stock in mutual funds rose $800 billion last quarter. home values increased 600 billion. keep in mind household net worth reflects value of assets like homes and bank accounts minus debts such as mortgages and credit cards. but economists note there are sizeable disparities. lower and middle income households aren't sharing in the overall prosperity. cargo meat solutions is recalling more than 132,000 pounds of ground beef due to a suspected e-coli outbreak that killed one person and sickened at least 17 others. the meet was distributed nationwide by these brands.
