♪ it's monday, october 1, 2018. this is the "cbs morning news." the fbi probe into sexual assault allegations against brett kavanaugh is under way and now there are questions about the scope of the investigation. a new three country trade deal is reached just before the midnight deadline. nafta will be replaced with the united states/mexico/canada agreement. and a mass burial is being held in indonesia where a powerful earthquake and tsunami killed more than 800 people. and the death toll is expected to rise.

good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. the investigation into alleged sexual misconnect by brett kavanaugh is moving forward. fbi agents interviewed one of three women who have accused kavanaugh but there are questions about the scope of the investigation. laura podesta is here in new york. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, and we know this investigation has a one week time line. there are already questions that the fbi is doing enough fast enough. attorneys for christine blasey ford the woman wh spoke before the senate committee last week say she has still not been contacted by the fbi. however, another woman has. >> i just knew that we or jeff flake explained to "60

minutes" why he sided with democrats when he pushed to reopen the fbi background check into supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh. >> you're telling all women that they don't matter. >> what i was seeing and experiencing in an elevator and watching it in the committee and just thinking this is ripping our country apart. >> reporter: yesterday, the fbi interviewed deborah ramirez one of three women who accused the judge of sexual misconduct in the 1980s. >> you're prepared for the fbi investigation? >> they don't reach conclusions. >> reporter: kavanaugh denies all the allegations against him. >> it's not meant to be a fishing expedition. >> this can't become a fishing expedition. >> reporter: the white house was adamant it was it wouldn't micromanage. >> the senate laid out the request and we opened it up. >> reporter: but democrats are concerned they're limiting the investigation's scope. >> but they cannot say, oh, hey, only interview the people in their neighborhood on one side of the street or only interview people from a certain period of

their life. >> this could be a blessing in disguise. >> reporter: president trump says the fbi has free rein. >> if judge kavanaugh is shown to have lied to the committee, nomination's over? >> oh, yes. >> i would think so. >> reporter: the senate begins debate on kavanaugh's confirmation vote this afternoon. former fbi chief james comey is calling the one week fbi investigation time limit idiotic. but he also said in a "new york times" op-ed that quote, it's better to give professionals seven days to find facts than have no professional investigation at all. anne-marie? >> well, arizona prosecutor rachel mitchell who questioned blasey ford on behalf of the republicans has assessed ford's allegations. what does it say? >> bottom line it's a he said/she said case and no prosecutor would bring it to a criminal trial.

nor a civil trial. that's because mitchell says the people ford named as witnesses either refuted her allegations or failed to corroborate them. anne-marie? >> laura podesta, thank you so much. well, ahead on "cbs this morning," we'll hear from one of the women who gave a passionate plea to senator jeff flake about the kavanaugh nomination in an elevator. we will ask her about the confrontation and if she believes she influenced flake's decision to call for an fbi investigation. this is the first monday in october when the supreme court begins its new term. the new session begins with just eight justices instead of nine following the retirement of justice anthony kennedy. on the docket this session, the court will hear arguments and cases on age discrimination, endangered species and if a state can execute a prisoner whose mental disability leaves him with no memory he committed the capital offense. president trump signed off on an agreement between the u.s.

and canada designed to replace the 1994 north american free trade agreement. the trump administration has set a midnight deadline to come up with the deal or it was willing to exclude canada from the trade pact including mexico. it reportedly increases u.s. access to the canadian dairy market and caps the auto imports to the u.s. the u.s. had reached an agreement with mexico. the new deal is called the united states/mexico/canada agreement. president trump blamed nafta for the loss of american manufacturing jobs and demanded major changes to the deal. well, indonesia is preparing a mass burial today for the victims of friday's earthquake and tsunami. indonesia's disaster agency says at least 844 people were killed and hundreds are feared buried. the government said that this morning that it will accept international disaster aid. the situation is desperate on

the central indonesian island hit hardest. bbc's reporter is there and filed this report. >> reporter: up to 50 people are believed to be still under the rubble of the hotel here in palu city. rescue workers are trying to find survivors. authorities say the death toll is expected to continue to rise. now some of the most vulnerable are getting help. but those left behind are struggling. with aid only now just trickling in, desperate residents are taking matters into their own hands. relatives are flocking to the area to try and find out the fate of loved ones. people have been waiting for hours for petrol since this morning. they have come this way trying to reach the affected areas of palu to find out what's happening to their loved ones.

amongst the crowd mothers who don't know what happened to their children. this lady hasn't heard from her son and daughter since the quake hit. with aftershocks continuing to be felt, frightened survivors here are spending another night out in the open. the fbi is investigating a suspicious car explosion in pennsylvania. about 60 miles northwest of philadelphia. three men were killed in saturday night's blast which is being tied to a so-called criminal incident. one of the victims is likely the perpetrator. the explosion rocked a popular dining area in allentown. >> i just heard the explosion, a big explosion like it scared me. it startled me. i thought it was a house that blew up like the one on 14th and allen, you know? but when they kept on saying it was -- it seems like a car or something i was like no, because

powerful typhoon tour through southern japan, killing at least two people and leaving miles of destruction. it made landfall in western japan last night. at least 120 people are injured. officials are warning of flooding and landslides. airlines have canceled more than 1,200 domestic flights. there was a shark attack off southern california and there's a search for a missing hiker. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the knoxville news sentinel reports an intensive search continues for a woman who went missing in great smokey mountains national park on the north carolina/tennessee border. 53-year-old missy susie clemens of ohio was last seen on friday. k-9 teams and drones are assisting in the search and verizon brought in a portable cell tower.

the search continues for a shark that attacked a boy north of san diego. a 13-year-old suffered traumatic injuries when an 11 foot shark attacked while he was lobster diving off beacon's beach on saturday. kayaker chad hamill helped to get the teen to safety. >> he said bite, i need help. he started to swim toward us and there was ten feet of blood behind him. he was in a panic. he flops on top of the kayak. his whole clavicle and back is exposed, blood is coming out filling up the kayak. >> lifeguards and police are using personal watercraft and aerial surveillance to search for the shark. people are not yet being allowed back in the water and the teen is expected to make a full recovery. "the new york times" reports undocumented migrant children have been moved under cover of darkness to a tent city in texas. hundreds of kids in shelters across the u.s. have been placed on buses to west texas in the middle of the night in recent

weeks. the mass reshuffling is under way to deal with surging shelter populations. the federal government is struggling to find room for more than 13,000 detained children according to data obtained by "the new york times." the "san francisco chronicle" reports california will require that women be included on corporate boards of directors. governor brown signed legislation yesterday that mandates all publicly traded california companies have at least one woman on their boards by the end of 2019. in 2021, five member boards will be expected to have two female members. and boards with six or more will be expected to have three. corporate associations oppose the bill as unconstitutional. and people reports kanye west's pro trump rant on "saturday night live" received some boos from the audience. ♪ west was wearing a make america

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. on "cbs moneywatch" elon musk steps down as chairman of tesla and california passes a net neutrality law. diane king hall has that and more. good morning. >> good morning. well, here on wall street, stocks wrapped up their best quarter in nearly five years. the dow industrials gained 18 points friday. the s&p 500 was down less than a point. and the nasdaq added four points to end the week. the trump administration is stopping a just enacted net neutrality law signed into law by governor jerry brown. the new law prohibits internet providers from blocking or

our top stories the white house says it's not micromanaging the fbi investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct made against brett kavanaugh. fbi agents have already questioned one of the three women who have accused kavanaugh. a former yale class mate of kavanaugh says he mischaracterized his drinking at college and that kavanaugh was a heavy drinker who was often belligerent and aggressive. and the u.s. and canada agreed on a new trade deal to replace the 24-year-old north american free trade agreement. it was reached before a midnight deadline and both countries say it will result in freer markets and fairer trade. the u.s. had already reached an agreement with mexico.

federal agents are cracking down on undocumented immigrants with previous criminal convictions. during a three-day sweep lass month, i.c.e. arrested 150 people in the los angeles area. most were from mexico. maria villareal rode along on one of the operations. >> reporter: it's 4:00 in the morning, nearly two dozen i.c.e. officers are finalizing plans. the agents door knocks and identifies the illegal immigrant before loading them into the cars. by mid-morning six men and women are in custody. one of the people arrested fredi gonzalez served jail time for attempted murder. the immigrants are transferred to a long term facility for a deportation hearing or deported immediately. >> these are all targeted operations. >> what if someone had been in the house? >> if someone else is in the house, the officers can conduct a field interview and make that decision if there's an enforcement action. >> reporter: immigration advocacy groups say an increasing amount of bystanders

not on the radar are getting caught up in the operations. >> i.c.e. is doing something very different. we can see their priorities are changing and that the dragnet for deportations is really expandi expanding. >> reporter: i.c.e. data shows deportations are up 30% compared to the end of the obama administration. and those without criminal convictions have more than doubled from 2016 to 2017. one in three is considered noncriminal. >> these are people that are just living their lives and trying to survive here in this country. >> immigration advocates will say these targeted approaches create fear in these communities. >> i wouldn't say that it creates fear. we're out there protecting the community. we're getting the criminals off the streets. coming up on "cbs this
