coach of the bay area swim club ousted. accused of embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars of the clubs money. good afternoon, i'm kenny choi. >> i am michelle griego. this investigation hits close to home. >> the the santa clara swim club is a very well-known establishment within our community. >> reporter: the captain of the santa clara police department says his officers were told saturday morning about the alleged embezzlement case. involving the santa clara swim club and head coach. according to the board members bitter has misappropriated an estimated $600,000 or more of its members money. the santa clara police department is in the beginning stages of its investigation. >> it's us stepping in and understanding the business practices of this club. their finances and their role and responsibilities. >> reporter: at an emergency meeting the ses be board voted.

in a letter dated september 29 obtained by swimming magazine that was sent to swim club members. is as we realize this may come to a shock to most of you. please understand there were solid circumstances that led to this decision. we are in the process of working with authorities. swimming world magazine said bitter had been involved since 1995 and became the head coach at the end of 2006. in 2009 he was name the club ceo. his swimmers have gone on to become olympic qualifiers as well as the 10 ranked top swim colleges. although the santa clara police department deals with major theft cases often. this case is different. >> this one is a little bit more -- it hits home becaofth fact the santa clara swim club is a well-known organization within the city.

this is not your average or standard one. >> reporter: we visited bidders home. he did not get back to us for comment. the club is closed for maintenance today. no one from the club returned our messages to comment on this case on camera. jackie ward, kpix 5. >> the club is not associated with the city. it has no city oversight. a meeting for the members will be held in the future to provide more details about the investigation. you're looking live at the white house right now. millions of americans across the country received a presidential alert on their cell phones 30 minutes ago. in the first ever tested the new emergency national alert system. the alert was sent out at 11:18 pm -- a.m.

no action is needed. the presidential alert system was developed to warn americans about a national crisis or disaster. such as a missile launch or a possible tsunami. this test was expected to reach 225 million phones. we sent our photographer out to see if anyone in the east bay was checking their phones during this alert. he said he saw a few people looking. many people said they did not get the alert. the white house says when those messages appear people should take them extremely seriously. that have a direct impact on life or safety. a story out of washington. federal authorities are investigating a suspicious letter sent to president trump and two poison letters addressed to to top pentagon officials. the mail sent to the president never reached the white house. the mail delivery center at the pentagon remains under quarantine after two letters containing the deadly poison ricin were intercepted on monday. it's unclear if the envelope sent to the president alntainsi asult against supreme cot lawaia

president trump's claim that he is largely a self-made billionaire. >> i got a very small loan from my father many years ago. i built that into a massive empire. i paid my father back that loan. >> mr. trump has said the loan was for $1 million. according to a new york times investigation the president was given or inherited the equivalent of at least $413 million from his father's real estate empire. much of his wealth came from devious tax schemes by the trump family. including setting up a scam corporation to disguise gifts from their parents. the times estimates the trump family avoided paying at least $550 million in gift and inheritance taxes. paying over 50 million instead. >> i have brilliantly use those loans. i have often said on the campaign trail that i have a

no more tax than is legally required. >> reporter: an attorney for president trump called allegations hundred percent false and highly defamatory. tax investigators in new york state are reviewing the allegations. the time says it reviewed 100,000 financial documents including confidential tax returns for its report. if the allegations are proven true the president could face civil fines for tax fraud. melania trump is tweeting 4h on her first solo foreign trip as the first lady. trump called the experience very emotional. the trip as part of her be best campaign and improving the well- being of children.

the first lady will visit malawi in kenya as well as egypt over the next few days. the archdiocese of san jose is taking steps to rebuild trust with parishioners by mid- october it will release a list of the names and status of every priest who were found to be credibly accused of minor abuse within the diocese. the churches hired an outside firm to review all records of sexual abuse of minors. and investigate the churches past abuse claims. >> people have lost faith in the institution. i am hoping that they have not lost faith in jesus the christ. that is what i pray for. it is a long road ahead. >> yesterday the holy trinity held a listening session to air their frustrations with the catholic church. kpix 5 heslin the santa fe unified school district has considered a plan to tear down schools and make way for affordable housing. leland high school and bret harte middle school are on the chopping block. the district is talking about

closing or ingesting enrollment of various schools in order to accommodate new housing development projects. there hoping to keep some teachers by building affordable housing. the idea is getting backlash from people who live in the proposed area. which is one of the wealthiest and san jose. >> i am horrified to hear that they might consider tearing down a well established middle school and high school. >> i don't think the neighbors will approve of it. i think there will be an uprising. >> so far nothing has officially been decided. santa five -- faye is hosting a meeting tonight at 6:00. the city is discussing a plan that could allow the mayor to remain in office for an extra two years. the next mayoral election would be held in 2024.
