good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news i'm in for anne-marie green. the nashlg traffic safety board is investigating what's bel transportation accident in this country in nearly ten years. 20 people were killed, including four cysters when a limousine blew through a stop sign saturday afternoon about 170 miles north of new york city. the 18 people inside the limo all perished and two pedestrians were killed. laura bow daeft is here with all the details. >>. >> reporter: good morning. a family victim said the limo was transporting the group between wineries in the area which is a popular fall tourist destination. state police say the limo was going about 50 miles per hour when it crossed the intersection, slamming into a parked suv and then sliding down into a ravine. a

ion when i cshed in upstate nerk t swaye and you just heard the whoosh. >> reporter: all eight teen people in the limo were killed. the crash happened saturday afternoon in schoharie about 175 miles north of new york city. four sisters among the dead. >> they were fun loving. they were wonderful girls. one has two little children and one has one child. and they now have no home or no parents. >> reporter: the group was celebrating the 30th birthday of the youngest sister, amy steenburg. she and her husband axel were married earlier this year. he was also in the limo. >> they did the responsible thing getting the limo so they

wouldn't have toriwli. >> reporter: the national tran poretation board says this is one of the deadliest accidents in history. officials are not speculating on the cause. >> at this point in time we look at everything. we look at vehicle factors, roadway, survival factors, we look at the condition of the drivers. >> reporter: local officials say this intersection has been prone to accidents in the past. >> a vigil will be held tonight for the victims and family and friends have set up go fundstor. thank you, laura. ahead on "cbs this morning," we'll speak to the wife of a limousine driver. now to some potentially threatening weather bearing down on florida's coast. tropical storm michael is believed to be a hurricane tonight or tomorrow as it moves across the gulf of mexico. it's expected to hit the northeastern gulf coast sometime wednesday. a state of emergency has been declared in 26 counties in the florida panhandle.

amber lee of our los angeles station is tracking the storm. >> trackingchts ispins i the gulf of mex itmesoength nexf days going from a category one to a category two by the time we head into tuesday night. it looks like it should be making its way over to the florida panhandle, weakening, becoming possibly a category one hurricane. the different models show the different forecast routes and we have four different routes that we're looking at. most of it headed toward florida. other one looks like it could make its way towards louisiana, maybe mississippi. we have another hurricane there is currently a category one there is sergio. it's going to lose some strength as it makes its way toward baja, mexico, becoming a tropical storm by the time we head into thursday. this will bring an influx of tropical moisture not just into southern california but taking aim to the southwest as it makes its way over for the next few

days. that's the latest on the tropical system, amber lee, cbs news. nyly confirmed supreme court justice kavanaugh heads to the white house today. he was narrowly confirmed following a bitter confirmation hearing. he was sworn in saturday evening in a private care moan. his confirmation say big win for the president, the second justice he's put on the court in as many years. >> i stand before you today on the heels of a tremendous victory for our nation, our people, and our beloved constitution. >> reporter: president trump was in a celebratory immediate in kansas shortly after kavanaugh was confirmed as the newest supreme court justice. >> on this vote the ayes are 50, the neighs are 48. >> it was one of the closest supreme court nominations in

history. made possible by manchin and collins. collins said the fbi report on dr. christine blasey ford report of sexual assault was a factor. >> when i looked at the lack of any corroborating evidence, i could not conclude that brett kavanaugh was her assailant. >> but collins says she does believe dr. ford experienced some kind of trauma. >> i do believe that she was assaulted. i don't know by whom and i'm not certain when. >> reporter: a suggestion democrat her roana called insulting. >> what is that? >> with just a month to go before the midterms, both parties say the bitter confirmation fight is helping to galvanize their supporters. >> change must come from where change in america calls begins. the ballot box. >> i want to thank the other side for the tactics that have

allowed us to kind of energize and get involved our own voters. >> reporter: a senior white house official tells cbs news the president sees the importance of the kavanaugh confirmation which will be a theme in the run-up to the election and beyond. nicole killian, cbs news, the white house. mike pompeo says north korean leader kim jong-un is readied to allow international inspectors in the north's nuclear and missile sites. pompeo met with kim for over three hours yesterday in pyongyang. he says significant progress was made with a deal to the north to give up its nuclear weapons. there is going to be a second summit between president trump and kim. they called the talks productive and wonderful. this morning pompeo flew from south korea to china. many residents in northern haiti spent the night outdoors after a powerful aftershock rocked the island of hispaniola

yesterday. saturday's magnitude 5.9 quake killed at least 12 people, including a 5-year-old boy crushed by his house. nearly 200 people were injured. houses were destroyed and parts of a hospital and auditorium collapsed. the death toll from the earthquake and tsunami in indonesia is over 1900, but bodies are still being recovered. it's feared more than 5,000 others may be missing. the government says it will end the search operation on thursday. the magnitude 7.8 quake hit ten days ago. several neighbors were wiped out. more than three thousand homes were severely damaged and covered upup, a space "x"

our top stories this morning. the national transportation safety board is trying to figure out why a limousine blew through a stop sign-in upstate new york saturday killing 20 people. 18 of the victims were in the limo, including four sisters. they were going to a birthday celebration. the limo hit an suv and killed two nearby pedestrians. and tropical storm michael is expected to become a hurricane late today or tomorrow as it moves through the gulf of mexico towards the florida panhandle. it could reach the florida coast by wednesday as a category two hurricane. a state of emergency has been declared in 26 florida counties. this time last year, nearly a dozen wildfires bore through

northern california killing 42 people. thousands of homes and business were destroyed, including several wineries. here's the report on how california wine country has recovered. >> reporter: one year ago the atlas fire moved quickly and without worth across the hill sides of napa valley. >> we got hit within the first hour of the fire starting. >> reporter: the flames destroyed a home, offices and a winery here but spared the crush pad where grapes are crushed turning them into wine. >> for that, we're very fortunate to have played it through this. >> reporter: many in the region didn't know until last year that vineyards are a natural fire break, so hardly any burned. tuesday, the winery will hold a ground breaking for a new facility, and there's already a temporary tasting room. all though the fires were devastating, tourism officials say there was a linger misperception that wine country had burned down.
