good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cdq in new york, i'm hena doba in for aaron marie green. life threatening hurricane michael is getting stronger has it moves towar coast. now an extremely dangerous kat category four storm it's expected to make landfall along the panhandle later today. it's expected to hit coast with sustained winds exceeding 130 miles per hour. while producing a potentially catastrophic storm surge of 13 feet, some 375,000 florida residents have been urged or ordered to evacuate in 22 counties. panama city is one of the locations under a mandatory evacuation order and looks to be in the crosshairs of this monster storm. nicole killian is there. nicole, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, hena. we're just starting to feel some of the outer bands of hurricane michael which forecasters fear could be one of the worst storms

in the panhandle's history. s of peoacuated long the padle e of t hurcane if avome rede ignoring those orderng th rheshouo th but we've just been through so many that we're comfortable staying so we're going to. and we've got enough food and generator, gas. >> reporter: stanley west owns the cafe in saint marks. he typically reopens after a storm passes like he did earlier this year after alberto. but he's more concerned about michael. >> this one is just one we're not going to take a chance on. we usually get skirted by. >> reporter: most businesses have boarded up hoping it's enough to stop a storm surge that could hit 13 feet. >> i figured i better put a little extra effort into it and feel a little more comfortable.

>> reporter: first responders are on their way from all around the country. many were in the carolinas just last month from hurricane florence. >> no matter how hard they've been beat down and worked, if another storm is coming or emergency arise, they step up to the plate. >> reporter: michael is expected to hit the carolinas as a weakened storm tomorrow. >> reporter: here on panama city beach we are sandwiched between the beach and the bay which is part of the evacuation zone. just this morning governor scott warned residents this is their last chance to get out, otherwise they're going to have to shelter in place. hena. >> be safe out there. thank you. unlike hurricane florence, michael is fast moving and gave gulf coast residents little warning to get out of the way. the chief meteorologist at our boston station has more. >> overnight we've seen a rapid deepening of hurricane michael, an extremely dangerous hurricane

has it continues to lift north across the gulf of mexico. you can see the eye more clearly formed and deep thunderstorm activity and these storms are intensifying as they approach landfall can really push in a very dangerous storm surge. that will be a big story as we head into the day on wednesday. here's a look at our track of the center of the storm, the eye of it. very close to panama city to port saint joe as we head into early afternoon. and then it will move up across georgia and the carolinas holding on to that circulation. that will continue to bring strong winds, although below hurricane strength across much of the southeast. the storm surge warnings up along the coastline, 6 to as much as 13 feet of storm surge especially towards the big bend area and up toward panama city. if you have an evacuation order, heed that. it's a very dangerous hurricane. there you see the wind gusts as it pushes off to the north and east, falling below hurricane strength across georgia and the carolinas, but still some gusts over 50 miles per hour and that combined with rainfall can bring

power out ages. even as it approaches north carolina, we're talking gusts over 50 miles per hour. it will hold a lot of that circulation together. there's the rainfall, a big stripe of 4 to 8 inch rains and higher amounts at landfall in florida. there's the official track from the hurricane center racing off to the north and east sliding to the south east of new england just offshore of nantucket. a dangerous one especially for the panhandle. of particular concern are the residents of florida's nursing homes. following hurricane irma last year, the state ordered all nursing homes to have backup generators. but as we report, many still do not. >> she's not breathing. >> reporter: that was just one of the 911 calls that came from this nursing home in hollywood, florida, last year days after hurricane irma knocked out power. the facility did not have a functioning generator. 14 residents died.

with hurricane michael approaching, governor rick scott warned facilities. >> if you're responsible for the patient, you're responsible take care of them. that means you should be having backup generator power or you shouldn't be taking care of them. >> reporter: he signed legislation for nursing homes and assisted living facilities to install generators. by jun 1st they were required to have equipment that keeps indoor temperatures below 81 degrees and maintain power for 96 hours after an outage. but in counties threatened by michael, more than half of 412 facilities did not meet the deadline to install or set up new generators. most have been granted extensions including brookdale center point. >> is this compliant. >> reporter: brookdale's alicia turner says a larger generator will be installed by january. in the meantime she says this current generator should be enough to keep their18 residents safe.

>> we have a backup generator ready to go and deploy here with the technicians available for when we need it. >> reporter: facilities like this still show they can keep residents safe in order to get an extension. part of demand is the problem. the way for the generator which complies with the state law can go anywhere from 16 to 24 weeks. the hurricane is already impacting travel. american, delta, and southwest airlines are waiving change of flight fees along michael's projected path.seral airports a including tallahassee and panama city have shut down operations beginning today. there are gas shortages. gas stations in tallahassee have run out of fuel. and amtrak is modifying its service in florida. we'll have complete coverage of hurricane michael including reports from our correspondents on the gulf coast.

president trump says he's narrowed the list of possible replacements for u.n. ambassador nikki haley to five. she abruptly announced yesterday she was resigning. mr. trump says he's known for months but many in the administration and u.s. allies were caught by surprise. laura podesta is here in new york. good morning. >> reporter: yes. president trump said nikki haley first brought up resigning about six months ago, but there are lingering questions about why it's happening now, just a month before the midterms. colleagues of u.n. ambassador nikki haley said they were shocked by news of her sudden resignation praising her work as st two yrs.. diplomat over the >> i feel sorry about it. because we've had a very good relationship. >> nikki haley is one of the most talented u.n. officials i have ever met.

allegations of a missing journalist. those are some of the headlines. the washington post reports a squad of 15 men from saudi arabia arrived in turkey the same day that journalist jamal khashoggi disappeared in istanbul. investigators suspect the men played a role in his disappearance. security video shows khashoggi a critic of the saudi government entering the consulate on october 2nd but he was never seen leaving. turkish officials say they believe he was killed inside the consulate. the saudi government says he left the building soon after he arrived. it denies it sent a team to istanbul on the day the journalist disappeared. "the new york times" says emboldened by his brett kavanaugh supreme court victory president trump stepped up his attacks on democrats at a rally in iowa. >> you don't hand matches to an arsonist and you don't give

on the "cbs moneywatch," starbucks announces new child care benefits and google unveils its latest pixel phone. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and much more. good morning. >> good morning. it's a chopping session on wall street as investors weighed the latest move on the bond market. the yield on the ten-year note rose and then pulled back. investors fret about that because it can set the tone for borrowing costs. higher yield can lead to costlier borrowing. the stocks were mixed yesterday. the dow lost 56 points. s&p shed 4 while the nasdaq gained 2. word that sears is adding a restructuring expert to its board is fueling speculation that the troubled retailer may be preparing to take drastic measures to protect its remaining assets. sears has closed hundreds of stores and the retailer has a key debt payment due in less than a week. analysts say anything from a

retiring from the nfl, hall of fame quarterback kurt warner is still drawing up winning plays. over the years they have contributed millions to help those in need, but their latest efforts were inspired by their son zack who is developmentally disabled and legally blind. the warners couldn't find a place in arizona where he could live on his own so they built one called treasure house. it recently opened. for their son and five others. there are plans to take in at least 20 more people with disabilities. it offers not only job training but also a sense of community and independence for its residents. and a whale calf is back at sea after getting tangled in a net meant to protect swimmers from sharks off australia.spott yesterday and called for help. rescuers from seaworld spent almost two hours helping untangle the humpback calf.

haley announced she is leaving her post at the end of the year. mr. trump said he has known for months, but many in the administration were caught off guard. haley is a former governor of south carolina who has been mentioned as a potential presidential candidate. but she said yesterday she will not run in 2020. there are three new cases of a rare illness with symptoms similar to polio. the patients are being treated in pittsburgh. here's more. >> the rare, poorly understood polio like illness attacks the body's nervous system. the cdc says there have been thirty 8 cases through the end of september, 14 cases have been found in colorado and six in minnesota. most of them have occurred in children. elaine and michael young said after a fever in july, their now 4-year-old orrville had trouble moving his right arm. doctors found a clue who what was wrong from an mri scan. >> the results come back he had an abnormality through his entire spinal cord.
