it's thursday, october 11th, 2018. this is the cbs morning news. hurricane michael is now a tropical storm, but it has become deadly. we're tracking the record-breaking storm as it continues its destructive path up the eastern seaboard. and wall street's free fall, all eyes will be on the market this morning after yesterday's d the worst is over.

good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters in new york. i'm hena doba in for anne-marie green. earl morning hne michael was downgraded to a tropical storm as it moved over south central georgia, but the most powerful hurricane on record to ever hit the florida panhandle left behind a trail of breathtaking destrction. the damage is widespread and extensive. at least two deaths are blamed on the storm. a half million customers are without power in three states. florida, georgia, and alabama. michael came ashore with sustained winds of 155 miles per hour producing a storm surge that reached 12 feet in some coastal areas. we begin our coverage with nicole killian in hard-hit panama city beach. good morning, nicole. >> reporter: hey, good morning to you, hena. i want you to look at some of this damage. we've got this tree down, power pole down, over here we have pieces of tin stuck on wires. because of all of this damage a

curfew has been imposed until later this morning. michael barreled through the florida panhandle yesterday as one of the most powerful storms to hit the u.s. in decades. >> it snapped trees like they were tooth picks. >> reporter: 155-mile-per-hour winds toppled trees. some sliced through homes. >> i heard all the trees snapping and everything, sounded like a tornado. >> reporter: the storm ripped apart this panama city school and turned other buildings into rubble. residents walked through streets covered in downed power lines. more than 375,000 people evacuated ahead of this storm which came ashore as a category four hurricane when it made landfall here yesterday afternoon. >> you live on the coast, this is what you get. so it's just a matter of picking up the pieces and putting it back together.

getting our lives back together. >> reporter: debris covered som. ece of wood smashed through a windshield. michael weakened as it reached georgia but it's now taking aim at the carolinas and virginia, still cleaning up from hurricane florence. >> we got the sandbags for the storm earlier last month, florence, and then we kept them here at the salon to be prepared for any upcoming storms for the rest of the season. >> reporter: one early estimate put the initial cost of the storm at over $10 billion. governor rick scott said his state will be aggressive with its response and recovery and will do everything it can to help these devastated communities. >> thank you, nicole. even as it moves inland michael remains a severe storm system with damaging winds and flood-producing rain.

eric fisher chief meteorologist out of our sister station wbz has the latest. >> we're not done with michael yet but it's one for the record books. this was the strongest hurricane to make landfall in the continental u.s. in october to be recorded. the third lowest pressure to make landfall in the united states. that pressure is important because it has a direct relationship to the strong winds. this is about as strong as it gets when it comes to a land falling hurricane. now we're watching the remnants still packing a punch moving north and east as we head throughout the day on thursday. we'll see the rainfall go up the eastern seaboard and then friday morning some heavy rainfall right along the southern new england coastline over toward cape cod before it slides out to sea. there's still a lingering tornado threat today. that's usually the case with a land falling tropical system. we'll watch the carolina well as the savannah area of georgia for brief spin-up tornadoes. the winds are lower but they're still packing a punch.

this is moving over an area that had a lot of rainfall from florence. the ground is very wet. strong wind gusts over 40 at times, over 50 miles per hour traveling across south and north carolina and wind gusts around 60 from the outer banks around the tide water as this departs late on thursday night and into friday morning. still a lot of wind and that can bring down some trees, cause power outages and lead to damage. now the rainfall part of this, it's moving a lot faster than florence did but we still see 4 to 8 inches of rain toll totals moving up across the carolinas. you can easily see areas of flooding again because it's so saturated. heavy downpours move up to southern new england. the heaviest will be across cape cod, the islands, and across rhode island as well. this is having a lingering impact. it will be offshore on friday. brings about a pattern change. a lot of cold going to move down to about 48. florida governor rick scott says aggressive search and

rescue operations will get underway as soon as conditions allow. in some towns hit hard by the storm went to work in the middle of the deadly weather. >> reporter: hurricane michael slammed in port saint joe. heavy rains and tree-snapping winds pummeled the florida panhandle. thousands of people rode out the storm at home despite being told to get out. port saint joe residents went into rescue mode after michael's 12-foot storm surge trapped people in their homes. volunteers in small boats and big trucks pushed through streets blocked by trees and submerged in several feet of water. donna haddock didn't have a way to check on her family so she used our cell phone to tell her trapped nephew that help was on the way. within minutes, a driver in a big pickup truck pulled up to the waterlogged house and carried jeff pitts and his dog

buddy to higher ground. >> how was the water levels? >> got up to four feet in the house. >> in the house? >> in the house up to about my hip. >> reporter: the driver was a man named chris. he didn't have time to talk as he drove back to help more people. but his actions said plenty in this small community. where would these people be without people with big trucks and boats? >> where's anybody without friends. >> reporter: even as the storm was passing overhead, volunteers came out with chainsaws working to clear the streets of downed trees. in other parts of the city, hurricane-force winds damaged buildings and even flipped over this rv. as people assessed the damage, donna is just thankful she survived one of the biggest hurricanes to hit the florida panhandle. rews, port joe florida. sirumpl

tour areas hit by hurricane michael next week but the recovery effort will be slow and difficult. at fema headquarters the work began before the storm even hit. >> reporter: fema administrator brock long says the images suggest months or years of recovery for the hardest hit area. >> power will be out for weeks and infrastructure is heavily damaged. it takes a long time to put this back. >> we caught up to long after he briefed the president at the white house. >> they're reporting this is one of the most powerful hurricanes ever to hit our country. is that actually a fact? >> well, you know, in this area this would be the most intense hurricane that's struck this area since 1851. >> reporter: fema has about 3,000 employees in the field plus aircraft and search and rescue teams ready to move into both florida and georgia. but with more than 60 severe storms and hurricanes over the

last two years, fema is under considerable pressure. is fema stretched thin? >> yes. you start to reach a point where the internal capabilities to manage the day to day activities that we do but the sheer number of disasters, and not just of the sheer numbers, but how intense these disasters have been, it starts to stress the agency. >> we'll get the latest on the hurricane's impact and efforts to help those in need from fema administrator brock long. now to the dramatic losses on wall street. this morning dow futures are down indicating yesterday's monster selloff may continue. by wednesday's close, the dow jones lost 831 points, that's over 3% of its value. the s&p finished 90 points lower. and the nasdaq plunged nearly

316 points, a 4% drop. it's fallen 7.5% in five days. the losses were widespread. apple and amazon, the two most valuable companies on the s&p had their worst days in 2.5 years. concern over rising interest rates helped fuel the selloff. the federal reserve recently raised short-term interest rates for the third time this year. speaking in pennsylvania yesterday, president trump said he disagrees with the fed policy. >> i think the fed is making a mistake. they're so tight. i think the fed has gone crazy. >> but, mr. trump did say the market plunge was a correction we've been waiting for for a long time. coming up on the morning news, the crown prince connection. u.s. intelligence reveals new details in the case of a missing journalist. and back on the campaign trail, president ronald reagan lives on in a halogram.

some jewelry on the shelves of national retailers could be dangerous. testing for the nonprofit center for environmental health shows jewelry sold with women's apparel was loaded with a toxic metal cadmium. it can harm the reproductive system. and cause cancer after prolonged exposure. the jewelry was found at stores including ross, nordstrom, and papaya in the san francisco area. several states have outlawed cadmium in children's jewelry but not adult items. president ronald reagan is back as a halogram and the latest on the investigation into a missing journalists. those are some of the headlines on the morning news stand. u.s. intelligence intercepts show the crown prince of saudi arabia ordered an operation to lure missing post columnist jamal khashoggi bag to the country and then detain him. it's another piece implicating the saudi regime. he was last seen entering the saudi consulate in istanbul. turkish officials say a saudi hit squad lay in wait for the journalists and killed him. he was a prominent critic of the saudi government. the operator of the limo company involved in that deadly crash in upstate new york was arrested and charged with criminally negligent homicide. he pleaded not guilty and was released after posting a $150,000 bond. 20 people were killed saturday, including the driver who did not have the proper license to operate the limo. state police say hussein ignored transportation orders that the limo should not have been on the road after failing inspections. the san francisco chronicle reports a judge is deciding

whether to uphold a jury's $289 million judgment against aryesterday without makingo. a tentative ruling saying she intended to talk out the jury's $250 million punitive damage award and order a new trial. monsanto's weed killer roundup caused dwayne johnson's cancer. >> so the stakes are not only enormous here, it's enormous for mr. johnson. he's under this death sentence. one way or mower he's not going to be alive very long. the jury also awarded johnson 39 million sds in compensatory damages. and the ventura county star says the late president ronald reagan comes to life in a halogram in a presidential library in california. it was unveiled yesterday and

on the "cbs moneywatch," there's a possible record price hike for postage stamps and the latest healthcare merger. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning. >> good morning. the proposed $69 billion merger between cvs health and aetna got the green light. from the justice department. but there's a catch. but aetna must move ahead to sell its medicare part d. drug program to resolve any antitrust issues. cvs opted to buy aetna last year. it will give them a bigger role in healthcare if the companies combine in cvs stores, clinics and prescriptions. meanwhile, at&t and time warner plan to launch a streaming video service next year. it will include films, tv shows, and other offerings. so far no pricing has been announced. at&t acquired time warner in june. it's the latest company to offer

our top stories this morning, hurricane michael the most powerful hurricane on record to hit the florida panhandle is crossing georgia this morning as a tropical storm. it left behind miles of devastation. michael hit the gulf coast with 155 miles per hour winds. and a storm surge that hit 12 feet in some areas. at least two people were killed. about half a million customers are without power. recovery efforts are expected to take weeks, if not months. the dow futures are down this morning following yesterday's dramatic selloff on wall street. the dow jones lost 831 points or over 3% of its value. there were deep losses across the board spurred in part by the fear of si the federal retiisd n'done y president trump calls the rate hike a mistake and crazy.

he also said the stock selloff was a correction. a 56-year-old new york man was charged yesterday with making a bomb. it was allegedly part of a plot to blow himself up on election day. >> reporter: fbi agents continued searching a home just north of new york city where they discovered a 200 pound bomb. they say paul rosenfeld planned to detonate that bomb in washington, d.c. on election day. he allegedly wanted to kill himself and draw attention to his political beliefs. over the past two months, according to court papers, rosenfeld sent letters and text messages to a pennsylvania resident detailing his plan to detonate the bomb on the national mall to draw attention to the political theory that advocates the random selection of government officials. the pennsylvania resident alerted the fbi and police pulled him over tuesday. after waiving his miranda

rights, he admitted his plan. he told agents he ordered large quantities of black powder on line, built small test explosives, and then used 8 pounds to construct the 200 pound explosive device in a plywood box in his basement. he said he installed certain components in the device to ensure he was killed in the blast. fbi agents removed the device from his basement and transferred it to a safe location. at a hearing christopher ray said his agents are checking all 50 states. for terror threats. >> those cover the waterfront right to left and everything in between. >> rosenfeld made his initial appearance in federal court in new york. they do not believe he's part of any larger terrorist organization. he faces up to 20 years if convicted. paula reid, cbs news, washington. coming up on cbs this morning, oscar winning actress

a nasa astronaut and russian cosmonaut have made a safe return to earth after the rocket carrying them to the international space station failed minutes after liftoff. nasa reported trouble with the russian soyuz 8 minutes after liftoff tweeting there has been an issue with the booster. minutes after that the soyuz landed in kazakhstan. recovery crews say both men are in good condition. our other top story this morning, tropical storm michael is in georgia and the carolinas. the storm is responsible for at least two deaths. now, when michael made landfall, it was a category 4 hurricane with winds at 155 miles an hour. and take
