[ bleep ] like kanye west and support -- good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters i in new york, i'm hena doba in for anne-marie green. this morning, remnants of hurricane michael are racing off the virginia coast into the atlantic ocean. on the florida panhandle governor rick scott says michael is responsible for unimaginable destruction. entire towns were obliterated. rows and rows of homes destroyed, lives changed forever. as it headed north, the storm brought flash flooding and damaging winds throughout the southeast. here's the latest. michael is blamed for six deaths. a million and a half customers are without power. in georgia, crop damage is estimated to be $1 billion. laura podesta is here in new york. >> this was the most powerful storm to hit the u.s. in 50

years, and the destruction is not over yet. the storm is still barreling up the southeast dumping heavy rains and spreading flash flooding as far away as virginia. rescue teams are going door to arching for survivors of hurricane michael. >> i just started crying because i see louisiana, miami, i see people who have been through this before and understand. >> the quietest tourist town took the brunt of the storm's 155-mile-per-hour winds. >> everybody we know lost their house, everybody, and their jobs. >> state officials say 285 mexico beach residents ignored the mandatory evacuation order, that includes dawn vickers who says the storm knocked her house off its foundation. >> i noticed that things seemed to be moving outside, and i thought that trees were going by. and i realized it was our house.

>> in nearby panama city, the damage is enough to shock even the most experienced rescue workers. >> i've been in the fire service 35, 36 years, and to see freight train cars just blown over, semis blown off the road into the woods, it's just unimaginable. >> a weekend, but still ferocious michael hit the carolinas and virginia yesterday where flash flooding led to dozens of rescues. >> when i turned i immediately started thinking i knew that i had hit the ditch. and i put it in reverse and of course it didn't go anywhere. >> a north carolina man was killed when a tree fell on his car. and an 11-year-old girl in southern georgia was also killed when debris ripped through the roof of her house. >> the town of bristol is about 60 miles northeast of where hurricane michael made landfall.

nikki battiste went is with some residents returned to see if their home survived to try to figure out what's next. >> this family are leaving the shelter where they rode out hurricane michael with more than 200 people. hawthorne is returning to the place she's called home in brfo >> oh my god. >> we were with her when she saw her house for the first time. somehow, it still stood beneath this twisted knot of fallen trees. her daughter amanda had to find another way into the house. this tree happened to fall the other way, narrowly missing their home. >> what are you feeling as you come home? >> devastated, happy. we still got a home. >> but not everyone was so lucky.

>> the storm messed up our house. >> brittany chambers and her 4-year-old daughter returned home to see first hand what michael unleashed. the storm devastated chambers entire street and sent this tree right through her daughter's bedroom. >> when you look in there how do you feel inside? >> sad. >> your home is severely damaged, your lives, what have you lost? >> materialistic things that can be replaced. as long as i have her this is everything that matters to me in the world. president trump says the u.s. takes the disappearance of "washington post" columnist jamal khashoggi very seriously. u.s. officials were told they have audio and video recording proving he was killed inside the saudi consulate in istanbul. the recordings provide evidence

that a saudi security team detained him in the consulate last week, then killed him and dismembered his body. president trump says the u.s. wants to know what happened, but he sees no reason to block the saudi purchase of u.s. arms, which some lawmakers are proposing. >> and i will tell you up front right now and i'll say it in front of senators, they're spending $110 billion purchasing military equipment and other things. if we don't sell it to them they'll say well thank you very much we'll buy it from russia or thank you very much we'll buy it from china. that doesn't help us. >> president trump says he hopes to have a report on khashoggi's disappearance soon. there appears to be progress in talks between president trump and special counsel robert mueller. mr. trump's lawyers are preparing answers to written questions to the russian interference in the 2016 election. but the potential of a face-to-face interview has not been settled. you could say president trump got upstaged by kanye

west. west has been a veocal supporte of mr. trump. but sometimes his profane oval office rant even seems to have the president scratching his head. major garrett reports. >> he might not have expected to have a crazy mother [ bleep ] like kanye west run up and support, but best believe we are going to make america great. >> with that oval office obscenity, kanye west described to president trump the cosmic effect his presidency had on his psyche. >> there was something about when i put this hat on it made me feel like superman. you made a superman. that's my favorite super hero. >> they were at the white house to discuss criminal justice reform and other issues with the president. west, a chicago native questioned mr. trump's support of the police practice known as stop and frisk. >> what we feel that stop and frisk does not help the relationships in the city. >> i'm open minded. i'm here. >> earlier this year west's wife and reality tv star kim kardashian successfully lobbied

the president to commute the sentence of a woman convicted of a drug offense. the president seemed perplexed, pleased, and amused. >> you're in the oval office. how does it feel to be in the oval office? >> oh, it is good energy in this. >> west has left an impression on previous presidents saying this about george w. bush after hurricane katrina in 2005. >> george bush doesn't care about black people. >> and after west grabbed a microphone from taylor swift at an award ceremony, president obama was caught on an open mike saying this. >> the young lady seems like a nice person, she's getting her award. what's he doing up there? >> he's a jack ass. >> the wrapper appeared delighted to be along for the ride. possibly for the first time the president appeared speechless inside his own oval office saying at one point that was quite something. major garrett, cbs news, the white house. new york city prosecutors

say they are moving full steam ahead in their case against harvey weinstein. even after they dropped one charge of sexual assault. yesterday prosecutors dropped a charge stemming from allegations by lucia evans that weinstein forced her to perform oral sex when she was an aspiring actress. prosecutors learned weeks ago that a detective told another witness who had a contradictory account to stay quiet. ahead, an interview with lucia evans attorney. stock futures are higher this morning falling a two-day wall street selloff. stocks sank more than 2% yesterday, a second day of declines. the dow fell 545 points following wednesday's dropoff of 831 points. the two-day drop is the biggest for the dow since february. the s&p lost 57 points finishing at its lowest close in three

"the washington post" says the percentage of young children in the u.s. who don't receive any vaccinations have quadrupled since 2001. an estimated 100,000 children under 2 years old have not had a vaccination against any of the 14 diseases for which shots are recommended. another study found the overall immunization rates were older kindergarten age children is holding steady at nearly 95%. "the wall street journal" reports several fbi employees were recalled from asia amid an investigin and partying. the justice department's inspector general is looking into the allegations involving fbi personnel in some half a dozen cities. the fbi issued a statement saying upon learning of the allegations of misconduct, action was taken to reassign personnel to nonoperational roles.

the secret service and dea have dealt with similar scandals in recent years. the fails river mayor says he's incident of fraud charges and will not resign. jasiel correia is accused of stealing more than $230,000 from investors in a start-up app before he was mayor. >> he used investor money to fund personal travel and entertainment spending thousands of dollars on airfare, luxury hotels, restaurants, casinos, dating services and adult entertainment. >> he became the youngest mayor in the history of falls river when he was elected in 2015 at the age of the 23. he was reelected last year. he was charged with wire fraud and filing false tax returns. the casper wyoming star tribune says matthew shepherd's

washington catholic cathedral. he was beaten, tied to a wooden fence and left to die in wyoming when he was a 21-year-old college student. his death became a symbol for the gay rights movement. today marks the 20th anniversary of his death. a public thanksgiving and remembrance service will be held at the cathedral on october 26th before the private internment. and the shredding painting girl with balloon will be on display in london 'this weekend. moments after it was sold it self-destructed through a hidden shredder placed in the frame by banksy. they renamed the painting love is in the bin. the winner bidder, an unidentified female collector is going ahead with the purchase paying $1.4 million. she says it's a piece of art for home buytd,isin mortgage rates hit a high and how that's hurting some home how that's hurting some home sales. pi

the bad news for home buyers. long term mooring rates hit their highest level in seven years. the after rate rate for a 30 year fixed jumped to 4.9% this week. it was 4.7% last week. a year ago it was 3.9%. higher rates increase the cost of home buying which can hurt home sales and sales of existing homes have fallen 1.5% in the past 12 months. on the earning front, delta air lines beat profit expectationings. it says it earned $1.3 billion in the third quarter, up 13 frers last year. delta's third quarter profit was due in part to a huge jump in ref view from first and business class tickets and higher cost controls. shares of delta rose 3.5%. johnson and johnson has been i woman saying their talc

"the associated press" is reporting the u.s. army expelled 500 immigrant recruits in a year without explanation. they were recruited across the world for their language or medical skills and promised a fast track to citizenship. the decade-old recruiting program was put on hold in 2016 amid concerns that recruits weren't being screened sufficiently. the army began booting out the enlistees last year. all launches of used rockets will be suspend pending an investigation. yesterday a russian rocket malfunctioned in mid air just after the launch. it forced an astronaut and cosmonaut to make a jarring emergency landing back to earth in kazakhstan. they were headed to the international space station. they said the two would fly again and would travel to the space station in the spring.

our top story this morning, we're getting a clearer picture of the devastation caused by hurricane michael. entire towns along the florida panhandle were wiped out when michael slammed the shore wednesday. the storm is being blamed for at east six deaths. more than 1.5 million customers in six states are without power. and the turkish government has told u.s. officials it has recordings that provide evidence of saudi security team detained "washington post" columnist jamal khashoggi in the consulate and killed him. the post says it's not clear if anyone in the u.s. government has seen these recordings. khashoggi was a critic of the saudi government.

the saudis deny claims that they killed him. an inspiring 20-year-old athlete is making history by signing with nike. carter evans has the story. >> reporter: here he comes for justin ga leg gos, running was a dream. he was born with cerebral palsy. a neurological disorder that affects coordination and muscle movement. >> initially when he started running he was falling and he would have bloody knees and 90% of the time he'd pick himself up and we'd finish the run. >> reporter: justin's dream wasn't just to run, but run fast. despite his disability, he can do a seven minute mile and now competes with the university of oregon running club. all of that put him on nike's radar. this past weekend at the end of a practice un, a company representative made a surprise announcement. justin would be signed as an official nike athlete.
