what's next in her legal battle. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs headquarters here in new york. i'm anne-marie green. early this morning, turkish police finished searching the saudi consulate in istanbul. they're investigating the disappearance of journalist jamal khashoggi, last seen there two weeks ago. khashoggi was a critic of the saudi government. but so far, the saudis deny they killed him. there are reports the saudis may be changing their story and that khashoggi was the victim of an interrogation gone wrong. holly williams is in istanbul with the latest. >> reporter: good morning. secretary of state mike pompeo arrives in saudi arabia today looking for answers in the mysterious disappearance of saudi journalist jamal khashoggi two weeks ago. sources tell cbs news that saudi arabian authorities may be

preparing to admit that khashoggi died as a result of an interrogation gone wrong. the u.s. resident and outspoken critic of the saudi government walked into the saudi consulate here in istanbul, turkey, on october 2nd, but hasn't been seen since. he apparently needed paperwork to marry his turkish fiancee. yesterday turkish investigators were finally allowed to search the saudi consulate and apparently spent eight hours inside the building. turkish officials speaking anonymously had already told journalists they belelieve khashoggi was murdered inside the consulate allegedly by a 15-man saudi theme arrived that day and left in the evening. officials have denied all involvement, insisting khashoggi left the consulate and calling the allegations lies and baseless. the question now is how much damage this will do to saudi arabia. an oil rich, ultra-conservative

islamic kingdom and key ally in the middle east. crown prince bin salman has portrayed himself as a reformer, winning praise for finally allowing women to drive. d disappearance, some business leaders have already pulled out of an investment conference in saudi arabia this month. sanctions are being discussed in washington. president trump has threatened severe punishment. he's also said he does not want the u.s. to cancel lucrative military contracts with saudi arabia. holly williams, cbs news, istanbul. now to the recovery efforts following hurricane michael. it's unclear just how many people are unaccounted for in the florida panhandle. search teams are using cadaver dogs to look through the rubble. hundreds of thousands remain without power in six states. in the hardest hit areas, food, water, and other essentials are in short supply. president trump visited parts of the most devastated areas yesterday. john schiumo is here in new york. john, good morning.

>> reporter: good morning to you. it's been six days since hurricane michael ripped through the florida panhandle. president trump witnessed the damage from the air and on foot and said fema is providing maximum relief. president trump surveyed the damage from hurricane michael on monday, getting a firsthand look at the devastation from the deadly storm. >> to see this personally, it's very tough. very, very tough. total devastation. >> reporter: the president handed out water to survivors and volunteers in lynnhaven, florida. the category-four hurricane tore week. >> hard to believe. i've seen pictures, but it's hard to believe it when you're above it in a plane. >> reporter: the president spoke with residents including michael rollins who rode out the storm with his four pets. >> the worst thing i've ever endured. >> reporter: alongside first lady melania trump, the president traveled to georgia to thank volunteers and will visit farmers who lost crops.ews are

restore electricity to the tens of thousands in the hardest hit areas. with gas running low, patience is running thin. >> to go to shelters, people ain't got cars, people ain't got gas to go to shelters. >> reporter: with many people being reported miss, fema officials believe the death toll from the storm is likely to rise. the toll is now expected to rise on the scale of hurricane maria. to date, michael is blamed for 19 fatalities. >> thank you very much. stormy daniels' attorney says that he will appeal a judge's ruling to dismiss daniels' defamation suit against president trump. daniels sued the president after he said a sketch of the man she claimed threatened her to keep quiet about an alleged affair with mr. trump was a con job. the president tweeted that daniels was playing the fake news media for fools. the judge said the president made a hyperbolic statement that was protected under the first amendment.

the defamation claim is separate from another lawsuit she filed against president trump over a nondisclosure agreement which is continuing. senator elizabeth warren says president trump's comments about the results of her dna test are creepy. warren released the results yesterday. they indicate that while the great majority of her ancestry is european, she has some native american heritage. the president has repeatedly mocked her claims calling her pocahontas. the president said in july that he would offer $1 million to a charity of her choice if she could provide proof of her claim. yesterday he was asked about that donation. >> if she gets the nomination in the debate where i was going to have her tested, i'll only do it if i can test her personally, okay. that will not be something i enjoy doing either. >> an official of the cherokee nation said dna tests are citizenship, and to use it to

lay claim to the cherokee nation or any other tribe even vaguely is inappropriate and wrong. the world's largest online social network, facebook, says it's going to ban false information about voting ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. facebook also says it will fact-check reports of violence or long lines at polling stations. facebook has come under fire for its lax approach to fake news reports and disinformation campaigns. bill gates says personal computing would not have existed without paul allen. allen, who co-founded microsoft with gates, died yesterday in seattle following complications of cancer. allen and gates were childhood friends. their big break came in 1980 when ibm asked them to provide the operating system for its personal computers. allen became a billionaire philanthropist eventually giving away more than $2 billion to a wide range of causes. he also owned the portland trailblazers and seattle seahawks.ws a new

18 of the clergy had been arrested, 13 were never arrested. reuters reports the world health organization says it will convene an emergency meeting to decide whether congo's latest ebola outbreak is a public health emergency. in the past week, there have been 33 confirmed cases of ebola. 24 people have died. there's been about 130 deaths since july. britain's "guardian" says a caravan of 1,600 honduran migrants attempting to enter the u.s. crossed the border into guatemala. they say that they are fleeing violence and poverty. they sang the honduran national th athey entered guatemala. ♪ about 100 guatemalan police officers met the caravan at the border. after a tense two-hour standoff they were allowed to continue their journey. the caravan began on friday with

"tech crunch" reports a dating app for president trump supporters leaked its users' data on the first day. donaldaters wants to make america date again. it had more than 1,600 users during the launch, but a security researcher was able to download the app's user data base, including profile names, profile pictures, private messages, and access tokens which can be used to take over the accounts. on the cbs "money watch," the budget deficit soars, and the fight to disclose drug prices in tv commercials. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, diane. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. well, here on wall street, shares in tech companies lost ground. health care and energy stocks also fell. overall stocks fell for the seventh time in eight trading days. the dow jones industrials lost 89 points. the s&p 500 fell 16, and the nasdaq was down 66 points. the bleeding on the nation's balance sheet hit its highest level in six years. 17% larger than last year. the federal budget deficit jumped to $779 billion in fiscal year 2018. that is a $117 billion increase from 2017. president trump's tax cuts meant diminished revenue, forcing the government to borrow more with

higher interest rates to cover its spending. the government's fiscal year runs from october to september. anthem, the second largest health insurer, will pay $16 million to settle the largest known health care hack in u.s. history. personal information of nearly 79 million people was exposed by a cyberattack discovered in 2015. names, birth dates, social security numbers and medical i.d.s were all breached. the $16 million payment is in lieu of civil penalties that the department of health and human services may have imposed. anthem admitted no liability. the federal government wants to force drugmakers to disclose the price for prescription medicine in tv commercials. drugmakers say not so fast. the drug industry's main trade group says drug companies are willing to disclose prices on their websites but not in commercials. they'll start doing that in the spring. the government claims patients deserve to know what a drug costs.
