drawing. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom and cbs headquarters here in new york, good to be with you, i'm anne-marie green. president trump isis warning against a rush to judgment in the case of missing journalist jamal khashoggi. turkish officials say they have proof he was killed inside the consulate. the saudis promise a thorough investigation. this morning, secretary of state mike pompeo has arrived in turkey and will be meeting with officials there. laura podesta is here in new york. good morning, laura. >> good morning, anne-marie. turkey's president erdogan told us that they just searched the consulate for traces of possible toxic materials. erdogan did not say what they found, but added that turkey wants to get to the bottom of what happened to khashoggi. secretary of state mike pompeo has arrived in turkey where he'll meet the turkish president

erdogan to discuss the disappearance of jamal khashoggi. turkish officials claim to have proof that s arabi used a 15-man hit squad to kill the journalist inside consulate in istanbul. today's visit comes hours after the meeting with the saudi king and crown prince. >> they told me they were going to complete a thorough investigation. >> they said no one would be spared in their probe, including members of the royal family. khashoggi who wrote critically about the saudis vanished on october 2nd. a high-ranking turkish official said a search of the building turned up evidence khashoggi was killed there, but president trump is criticizing condemnation of saudi arabia, comparing it to sexual assault allegations leveled against supreme court justice brett kavanaugh telling "the

associated press with, quote, here we go again with you're guilty until proven innocent. last night mr. trump spoke to fox business news. >> it depends whether or not the king or crown prince knew about it, in my opinion. if they knew about it that would be bad. >> reporter: cbs news learned the saudis are preparing a plan where they will say his death was a result of an interrogation gone wrong. declared a state of disaster in 18 counties where there is severe property damage. many homes and other buildings along the colorado and llano rivers are flooded and a dam has been breached. courtney zubowski has our report. >> reporter: the deafening roar was only matched by the rush of floodwaters, boats and trees raced downstream out of the dam to ease the pressure. more than ten feet above flood level, the overflowing llano river destroyed a section of the bridge in kingsland, texas. one person has died and forced the shutdown of this bridge over the colorado river leaving residents in llano county in shock. >> i've never seen this before. '96 and '97 were both a pretty good flood, but i believe this is a lot worse. >> mandatory evacuations have been ordered in the surrounding neighborhoods as rescue efforts are already under way. >> we had people that are

trapped in certain islands that we can't get to because you can see behind me the water is moving so quickly and the debris, we can't put boats in that kind of water. >> reporter: the river crested nearly double floodwaters but people aren't out of trouble yet. >> we want to keep encouraging people to stay off the roads. stay someplace safe. >> reporter: kingsland, texas. the death toll from hurricane michael has risen to at least 30. most of those are in hard-hit florida where more than 135,000 customers remain without power. many hurricane victims have had no cell phone service. governor rick scott has been critical of phone companies over what he calls a slow res store -- restoration of service. verizon says it will give a three-month credit in service in coastal cities that were slammed by the storm. a raness that paralyses where most of the

patients are children. tom hanson has details. >> the center for disease control is reporting 127 cases are under investigation for acute flaccid myelitis, afm. 62 cases have been confirmed. in 22 states. >> this is a mystery disease. we don't know what's causing this increase in cases. for some of the previous cases we've identified one pathogen or another, but we have no unifying diagnosis. >> afm affects the nervous system, specifically part of the spinal cord and can in some cases be caused by a virus. muscles and reflexes are weakened and some cases have been reported recently in minnesota and illinois. more than 19% of cases in children 18 years old and younger. >> we first detect and increase of afm in 2014 and then in 2016.

so far in 2018 we're seeing a similar increase. >> in 2014, 120 cases of afm were confirmed. in 2016, there werertile itar parents should seek care right away if they're child has sudden onset of muscle weakness in the arms or legs. tom hanson, cbs news, new york. the midterm elections are less than three weeks away. 35 senate seats and 26 of them held by democrats in play with control of the senate at stake. one closely watched race is in texas where ted cruz is challenged by beto o'rourke. and last night immigration was a topic with president trump's call for a border wall at the heart of the issue. >> congressman o'rourke not only opposes a wall, but he has said we have too many fences and walls already on the border. he wants to tear down what we have.

>> no wall will solve legitimate security concerns. >> the race had been close, but the latest poll show cruz pulling ahead. the dream lives on. there were no grand prize winners in the mega ball drawing last night and it climbs to $868 million. lottery officials say no ticket matched all of tuesday's numbers. numbers are 3, 45, 49, 61, 69 and the mega ball 9. friday's jackpot would be the second largest lottery prize in u.s. history. record prize was a $1.6 billion jackpot won in january of 2016. but coming up on the morning news now, stepping down, mary bono, the interim chief has resigned after backlash from gymnasts. and the update on a search

ll a golf course over the weekend. a man that shot the video said that he saw the alligator while golfing with his dad. the video went viral in 2016 when he was caught on camera at the very same golf course. the interim head of usa gymnastics has resigned. and an update on the certainly for a wisconsin teenager. those are some of the headlines on "the morning news" stands. u.s. news and world report says authorities are dismissing a tip that a missing teenager from wisconsin was spotted in miami. a girl resembling jayme closs was spotted monday afternoon. she disappeared from her home in barron, wisconsin, on the same day. deputies responding to a 911 call found the bodies of her parents inside the house. investigators say closs isn't a runaway and they believe she is in danger. mary bono resigned just days after being named interim head of usa gymnastics.

simone biles and others criticized her for an anti-nike tweet after they made kaepernick the face of its ad campaign. she was also criticized for her ties to a law firm that involved usa gymnastics during hits investigation of team dr. larry nassar. she said leading gymnastics would be a liability. a maryland police officer is due in court today after being arrested and charged with raping a woman in her car during a traffic stop. they say ryan macklin was on duty in uniform and in a marked police car when he pulled the woman over last week. he's been suspended without pay. >> he was relieved of his police powers, his weapon and his badge and his dree dent cals and vehicle were taken away from

him. and he will remain suspended as this investigation and subsequent prosecution proceeds. >> they say macklin left when a person the victim called earlier arrived on the scene. police say there could be more victims. nevada pump pimp legislature and candidate dennis hof was found dead in las vegas. he was found dead by long time friend porn star jeremy. it came hours after he celebrated his 72nd birthday. they say he went to sleep and didn't wake up. they say there's no preliminary indication of foul play. it is now legal to sell recreational marijuana in canada. this morning, canada became the second and largest country with the legal marijuana national marketplace. uruguay is the only other country to sell pot. at least 111 pot shops are expected to open across the country today, and canadians can

on the "cbs moneywatch," netflix has record subscriber growth and help for students defrauded by their colleges. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, diane. >> good morning. president trump stepped up his attacks on the federal reserve calling it, quote, my biggest threat. during an interview with fox business network, mr. trump said he's not happy with how fast the fed is raising interest rates. meanwhile, on wall street stocks, tallied their biggest gains and corporate reports in news that they posted the most job openings in 20 years. dow rallied 547 points, the s&p 500 jumped 59 and the nasdaq climbed 214 points or almost 3%. the streaming service netflix reported record subscriber growth for the third quarter. netflix added 7 million bscrers through september exceeding

projections. netflix has over 58 million subscribers in the u.s. shares of the giant jumped on the news gaining as much as 14% after-hours trading. now, in a race to be first, both uber and rival lyft may reportedly be headed to a public offering next year. according to "wall street journal," the uber offering could be as much as $120 billion. if it comes in at that price, uber would be worth more than ford, general motors, and fiat chrysler combined. jm morgan chase will lead the lyft ipo, which was valued at just over fifteen billion dollars. good news for students defrauded for for-profit colleges. it makes an obama era policy that makes it easier for kids to discharge loans goes into effect. they opposed the regulation known as borrower defense because she said it made discharging loans too easy.
