in central texas. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york, good to be with you, i'm anne-marie green. well, secretary of state mike pompeo is back from his trip to turkey and saudi arabia where he discussed the disappearance of journalist jamal khashoggi. pompeo meets with the president this morning. the disappearance of khashoggi remains a mystery. turkish investigators searched the home of the saudi counsel general in istanbul yesterday and "the washington post" published khashoggi's last column. laura podesta has the latest from here in new york. >> good morning. that article arrived on khashoggi's editor's desk one day after his disappearance. it had been with his translator and assistant. the post said it held off on publishing it until now because everyone was hoping for khashoggi's safe return. his editor wrote now i have to accept that will not happen. >> it's a fitting goodbye.

killed, roads are washed out, homes are flooded, and a bridge is destroyed. mark strassmann reports from llano, texas. >> reporter: central texas has so much floodwater with no place to go. the llano river, still roaring and still causing havoc to communities. at least two deaths have been blamed on the floodwaters. we came across a rescue team who found two men trapped in their submerged suv nose down in a street that had washed away. one of dozens of rescues over the last couple of days. most of this excess water has flowed into bloated lake travis. engineers have opened a series of control gates to relief the water pressure. how fast did the water come up? >> i would say ive or six feet. >> on tuesday morning, scott's family of four discovered the llano river had surged a half mile into their house ruining almost everything they owned. >> when the water came up in the

house and we got out, it was probably past our ankles and -- >> time to go. >> time go. we got the dogs out and that was it. >> reporter: the turners had no flood insurance, a costly reality for others here. from our drone camera you can get a sense of the power and scale of the overflowing llano river. there's more rain in the forecast through saturday. mark strassmann, cbs news, llano, texas. and now the death toll from hurricane michael has risen to at least 33 in four states, most in florida. residents in some of the hardest hit areas along the florida panhandle are being allowed back home to see the damage. and, for many, there is nothing left. now more than a week after the hurricane hit there are still over 100,000 customers without power. the former president of usa gymnastics is now under arrest this morning for allegedly tampering with evidence. steve penny was arrested in tennessee and is awaiting extradition to texas.

a grand jury indited penny for removing or destroying documents to hinder the investigation into allegations of sexual assault against dr. larry nassar. nassar is charged with sexually assaulting minors. at a texas ranch used by usa gymnastics for training. he has already been sentenced to decades behind bars in michigan. white house mcgahn has left the trump administration. mcgahn served as the president's general counsel during the campaign. he was the main contact inside the white house for the russia investigation and played a key role in appointing young conservative judges to the federal judiciary. the president said mcgahn would leave after brett kavanaugh was confirmed to the supreme court. a plane carrying first lady melania trump was forced to turn around shortly after takeoff when smoke was detected in the cabin. chip reid has details. >> reporter: first lady melania

trump boarded a 757 for a quick trip to philadelphia. about ten minutes after takeoff the traveling press watched as secret service agents suddenly headed toward the front of the plane then saw a haze of smoke and smelled something burning. the plane quickly returned to air force base andrews. she spoke to the president by phone. >> she got in another plane. i said i hope this plane's better than the first 1. >> reporter: that problem was a minor issue. a piece of equipment overheated. there are four 757s kept at andrews. the air force says president trump has never flown on this plane but i has used other 757s when the airports can't handle the 757 jumbo jet. >> how reliable are these planes. >> these are very reliable. >> this is the former head of the u.s. military office. >> i don't think you can find a more reliable aircraft, a safer aircraft, and more well-trained crew.

the cdc says an outbreak of drug recivility ant sam nelly is linked to raw chick prone ducts. 92 people in 29 states have been sickened. 21 people were hospitalized. they have not found a contaminated source of chicken. they say there's many varieties of chicken from different stores has been affected. they say it's okay to eat properly cooked chicken. usa today reports mexico sent police officers to its southern border with guatemala to intercept a caravan of migrants headed to the u.s. a group of migrants that has now swelled to about 4,000 is making its way through guatemala. the caravan set out from honduras last week. the migrants say they are fleeing violence and poverty. president trump is threatening to cut off aid to guatemala, honduras, and el salvador if they don't stop the caravan from

around 4,000 people have been forced out of their homes after a power line ard a fire a sheriff republican refinery. this is in the area of poinsettia and suisun avenues. firefighters went door to door overnight in the area of north broadway avenue, summer way, suisun avenue and willow pass road, telling people to get out immediately. it started around 9 p.m. last night after a grass fire started in the area. the 12" high pressure natural gas line runs through the east bay and an evacuation center is set up at the calvary church and the pittsburg-bay point bart station. willow cove elementary school will be closed today. >> we are followus on the phone is steve hill with contra costa county fire. good morning. what's the threat now?
