good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. president trump conceded it looks as though journalist jamal khashoggi is dead but he didn't say why he thinks so. the president also threatened very severe consequences if it's proven the saudis murdered him. laura podesta is here with more on this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. and that investigation is expected to be wrapped up by tomorrow, according to cbs news sources. what kind of severe consequences the kingdom could face has not been said by the president or anyone else in the administration. president trump says missing journalist jamal khashoggi is likely dead. >> it certainly looks that way to me. it's very sad. certainly looks that way. >> >> and he warned of consequences for saudi arabia if it's culpable. >> it's bad, but we'll see what happens. >> saudi arabia and turkey are

both investigating his disappearance. he was last seen entering the saudi consulate in istanbul on october 2nd. >> i told president trump this morning we ought to give them a few more days. >> secretary of state mike pompeo briefed the president on thursday. after returning from a fact-finding mission in riyadh and istanbul. sources tell cbs news nobody in the u.s. government has seen or heard the recording turkish officials claim to have proving he was murdered. pompeo urged the president to wait for the results of the investigation. >> when we see that we'll get a chance to determine, all of us will get a chance to make a determination with respect to the credibility and the work that went into that. >> there are now reports saudi arabia may ultimately blame a high-level intel official for khashoggi's death. both "the new york times" and "the washington post" say a top general may be accused of going rogue, an explanation that would deflect blame from the crown

prince mohamed bin salman. >> yesterday the committees for human rights activists called on turkey to launch its own investigation. those groups say u.n. involvement is the best guarantee against a saudi cover-up. anne-marie. >> laura, thank you so much, laura. president trump says he'll close the u.s. border if a caravan of honduran immigrants headed for this country is not stopped. that would disrupt hundreds of thousands of cops each day which could have an impact but border security is a hot issue. earlier he threatened to cut off aid to central american countries if the migrants were not stopped. mexico's foreign minister said they are assisting those that have already made it into mexico. here's that report. >> reporter: as many as 4,000

migrants are making their way from honduras to guatemala and into mexico with their sites set on the u.s. border. groups are sleeping in shelters and accepting food and money from strangers. many say they have fled violence in their home countries, some with little more than the clothes on their backs. after crossing in guatemala on monday, the next major border is mexico where the government has deployed hundreds of police officers aboard 727s to deal with the caravan. many migrants will be told to turn home, some will be allowed to seek asylum. geronimo gutierrez is the president there. >> there is a hue maptarian crisis going on, and we need to call it what it is. >> reporter: but president trump is lashing out threatening to deploy the military to the u.s. border. since the president suspended his controversial family

separation policy in june, illegal border crossings have sky rocketed. according to unpublished border patrol data, there were 16,000 family members arrested in september. an 80% increase over july. they say they are swamped and seeing more and more large groups crossing together. one official said on september 20th they encountered 275 adults and children, on october 2nd, 1 sixty four adults and children. john bolton reportedly got into a shouting match at the white house over the administration's immigration policies. on 60 minutes, leslie stahl asked the president if he would return to his family separation policy. frankly, when you allow the parents to stay together, okay, when you allow that then what happens is people are going to

pour into our country. >> are you going back to that. >> we're looking at a lot of things. >> reporter: these things happen from trial to time. the migrants travel in groups for safety. in april, several hundred made it to the u.s. border near san diego but a limited number were allowed to apply for asigh limb here in the u.s. jeff pegues, cbs news, washington. for the first time federal prosecutors are investigating abuse by roman catholic priests. subpoenas were served in at least seven of the eight roman catholic dioceses. the feds are demanding secret files and testimony from high-ranking church officials. nikki has more. >> reporter: catholic dioceses say they have received subpoenas. from the u.s. justice department as it investigates sexual hay buce within the church. two people familiar with the investigation tell "the associated press" the subpoenas were served across the state last week.

it demands information about whether priests, bishops, seminarians or lay people committed federal crimes. they want documents church leaders stored in secret and historical archives and confidential files along with they want any evidence pointing to anyone under their supervision who took children across state lines, used phones or computers to send sexual messages, or told anyone not to contact police. the federal investigation follows the state of pennsylvania's 800 page grand jury report in august listing the names of 301 predator priests and six dioceses. the report detailed widespread sexual abuse going back decades. just this week david poulson pleaded guilty to sexually abusing two boys between 2002 and 2010. he faces up to 14 years in prison. >> david poulson is a priest who preyed on children for his own sexual gratification. he is now an admitted sexual

predator. >> they say they are cooperating. nikki battiste, cbs news. more rain is forecast for today and tomorrow in texas. flood watch and warnings are posted for much of central texas. a state of disaster has been declared in 18 counties. the catastrophic floodwaters are blamed for at least two deaths. roads remain closed, houses and businesses have been flooded and thousands have been forced to evacuate. the national weather service says this winter looks to be wet and mild thanks to a el nino. the northern and western three quarters of the nation can expect a warmer than normal winter. el nino is the natural warming of the central pacific ocean which influences weather around the world. the fbi is asking for help with missing teen jayme closs.

of a top security job at the usa committee with an fbi investigating nassar. penny's lawyer confirmed the security position was discussed, but insisted there was no conflict of interest. penny was arrested wednesday for allegedly tampering with evidence in the nassar investigation. "the washington post" reports the ntsb has not been able to fully examine the limo involved in the crash that killed 20 people in new york state nearly two weeks ago. the vehicle is in the possession of the state police. that's after the operator was charged with criminal negligent homicide. federal safety investigators have reportedly expressed frustration over their inability to fully examine the limo. state police say it could be a few more works before the ntsb is granted hands-on access.rero says the combination of teenagers driving cars with only teen passengers dramatically increases the chance of a deadly crash.

the fatality rate for all people involved in a crash with teen drivers and teen passengers increased 51%. when a passenger 35 or older is in a car with a teen driver that number drops 8%. in 2016, teen drivers were involved in more than 1 million police-reported crashes. 3,200 people died. when teenage drivers rode with teen passengers, the fatality rates jumped 56% for people with other vehicles. it increase the 45% for the teen driver and 17% for bicyclists and pedestrians. and the houston chronicle reports a woman who allegedly dropped a wrong house in texas and then l charges. home security video shows a wom with one arm. she rang the doorbell but then ran away leaving the child
